John Garrett Vanzant & Mary Elizabeth Hilliard

I'm looking for Mary Elizabeth Hilliard Vanzant Baker. She is believed to have been born on June 23, 1851, in Calico Rock, Izard County, Arkansas. I cannot find her anywhere in the 1860 Census. She married John Garrett Vanzant and had her first child, my ggggrandfather William Washington Vanzant, when she was 16, which would make that 1867 if we have her birth year right. John Garrett VZ was from Carroll/Boone County, Arkansas, and Mary Elizabeth and John Garrett can be found in Boone County in the 1870 Census. Her parents were probably William Hilliard and Mahala McMillian Hilliard. Her mother died shortly after her birth. We believe she was either orphaned or abandoned by her father and then taken in by the Vanzants, but when they took her in we don't know. After John Garrett Vanzant died, she married George Milburn Baker, a civil war vet if that information is right. It is barely possible she had Cherokee blood, but no way of knowing. Calico Rock seems to be right on the edge of that Arkansas Cherokee Reservation. Anyone with any clue about her parents or her ancestry or her birth or where she was in 1860 or her marriage record, would you contact me? Thank you.

Calvin Parton Family

I am looking for more information on Calvin Parton family who lived in Mercer county missouri. They were in Mercer county in 1863 when calvin enrolled into the 4th provisional at princeton. In 1865 he married his second wife Jane Brittain Bly (Jane was previously married to James Bly who died in the Civil war). In 1870 they appear in the Falls River Wilson County Kansas census. They only stayed there a few years and moved to Mincy, Taney Co, Missouri. They had moved to this area by December 24, 1878 (Calvin Parton died on this date). His wife and children lived in Mincy at least until 1900 when they moved to Young township in Boone County Arkansas. We know that Calvin had a previous wife who died March of 1862 based on a affidavidt for Jane when she applied for her pension, but the previous wife's name was not mentioned. I am looking for any kind of information on this family. Bible records, letters, pictures, etc.

Many thanks,
Tonya Williams

Richard S Holt, and family of Arkansas

http://www.accessgenealogy.com/scripts/data/database.cgi?fil...

RICHARD S. HOLT. It is a pleasure to write the biography of a man of unusual personal merit-the possessor of a combination of gifts so comprehensive that happiness and success in any enterprise is bound to follow the application of his qualities to the solution of almost any reasonable problem in life. It is an unwritten law that the secret of success in life in all individual cases is the common property or heritage of all unfortunates of the human race. It is therefore eminently proper for the historian or delineator of character to review the lives of those individuals who have not only been successful in the various enterprises in which they engaged, but as citizens and neighbors have won the lasting regard of all.
___________________________________________________________

Richard S. Holt, a retired merchant and farmer, and an esteemed citizen of Lead Hill, Arkansas, was born in Cannon County, Tennessee, in 1832. His parents, William H. and Mary L. (Stevens) Holt, were natives of Virginia and Tennessee respectively, the former born in 1799 and the latter in 1802. This estimable couple was married in Tennessee, whither they had gone with their parents when young, and made their home in that State until 1840, when they moved to Ozark County, Missouri, by wagon, being about six weeks on the journey. They improved a farm and resided there until 1849, when the fertile soil of Arkansas tempted them to settle in that State.

They located in Marion County, on a small improved farm on White River, and there the father died in 1860. He had passed his entire life engaged in farming and stockraising, and as an honest, upright, industrious citizen was highly esteemed. He was a lifelong Democrat.

Mr. Holt was one of six sons and five daughters born to Fielding Holt, who was a native of the Old Dominion but an early settler of Cannon County, Tennessee, where his death occurred when he was about eighty-six years of age. Some of his people served in the Revolutionary War. Grandfather Stevens was a native of the Keystone State, but when a young man went to Tennessee, married there and reared his family.

Later in life he removed to Alabama, where he died over fifty years ago. He was also a farmer, and of French origin. He was the father of two sons and two daughters, one of his daughters, the mother of our subject,[Mary L. (Stevens) Holt] dying in Lead Hill in 1882.
The twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Holt were named as follows:
1  Fielding resides in Lead Hill;

2 Fannie, deceased, was the wife of William Pumphrey;
3 Sophia died in infancy; William, of Lead Hill;
4 Matilda, deceased, was the wife of Franklin Pumphrey;
5 Richard S., the subject of this sketch;
6 Joseph T. died in his fifth year;
7  James, deceased, enlisted in the Confederate Army and died in the hospital in Little Rock in 1863, when sixteen years of age;
8 Elizabeth, wife of Henry Clark, of Taney County, Missouri;Patrick Henry was her third marriage.[# 1 Wilshire Magness, #2 Tom Terry, ]
9 Sarah, of Lead Hill;
10 and Mary Ann, deceased.
11  Margaret, deceased, was the wife of William Coker;
12 James fought at Prairie Grove and various other places, was captured, but managed to escape, and although so young was a brave and faithful soldier. -

Until eight years of age our subject remained in his native county and then moved with his parents to Missouri and Arkansas. He received but limited educational advantages, but being possessed of a strong mind and an unlimited amount of good common sense, he made his way to the front and is classed among the intelligent men of Boone County. Until twenty-five years of age he remained under the parental roof, but during that time he was farming for himself.

After this he began clerking, continued this for about four years prior to the war, and in the summer of 1861 he enlisted in Company C, Fourteenth Arkansas Volunteer Infantry, Confederate Army, and was made second lieutenant.

He operated in Arkansas and at the expiration of his term reenlisted and was made captain. He participated in the battle of Corinth and soon after went to Tupelo, where he was taken sick. After remaining there for nearly a year he resigned his commission and came home, where he assisted in organizing a company. However it was not needed, as the war closed about that time.

In the year 1867 he married Mrs. Ellen Harris, a native of what is now Putnam County, Tennessee, and the daughter of Wilson and Keziah Wilmoth, natives of Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. Wilmoth came to what is now Boone County, Arkansas, about 1856, and passed the remainder of their lives there, conducting a farm. Both were Baptists in religion. To Mr. and Mrs. Holt was born one child, James B., who died when four years of age. Our subject has lived within five miles of his father's old place on White River since his boyhood. He farmed for two years after the war and then engaged in merchandising at Lead Hill for about fifteen years. Since then he has carried on farming and stockraising, and is the owner of about 500 acres, being one of the most substantial and best known citizens of the county. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., Polar Star Lodge No. 224, at Lead Hill, and is a Democrat.

http://www.dar.org/
http://www.accessgenealogy.com/scripts/data/database.cgi?fil...
From: Reminiscent History Of The Ozark Region, pub. Goodspeed Brothers, Publishers, Chicago 1894.

I am an ancestor of this family.

Possible Miller/Reser connection in Boone County AR

1900 Boone County AR census lists family of Lewis H. "Doc" Miller, wife was Barbara Ellen (Head) Miller. One of their daughters was Viola (Violie) Miller. At same time in Hilltop community was family of Abraham (Dan) Reser and his wife "Bam". One of their daughters was Alma. Viola Miller and Alma Reser on same date, married brothers William "Pink" Pendley and Isaac Pendley. Son of Isaac Pendley and Alma Reser said Alma Reser and Viola Miller were first cousins. An elderly granddaughter of Barbara Ellen Head Miller (and a niece of Viola) in totally unrelated information, confirmed the 1st cousin relationship between children of Abraham (Dan) Reser and Lewis H. "Doc" Miller. Marriages mention above sometime around l910-12 period. These two sources of information seem to jibe, but based on present information of Reser/Miller families, cannot see how this could be true. Can anyone familiar with the Miller/Reser/Pendley (and possibly Head) families in early l900 Boone county offer any help? Any small clue would be appreciated as I have struggled 20 years trying to confirm what these two "old timers" seemed to certain about. Thank you.

Solomon Melson

I know Boone County was created in the late 1860s, and understand this might very well be grasping at straws. But ...

My paternal 2g grandfather, Solomon Melson, is shown in his obituary as having been born in Boone County - maybe MO - on 15 Dec 1815, parents James Guinn Melson and Rosanna Ballew Melson. His parents had previously lived in the area around Natchez, Mississippi Territory, and left there sometime around 1813 for Missouri, where Solomon _may_ have been born. The family, with Solomon, moved to what was then Clark County, sometime in 1816.

Fine, so far. But, since Arkansas was then a part of the Missouri Territory - it didn't become a self-governing territory until about 1819-20 - any move to Missouri could as well have been to the area that became Boone County, AR, as to Boone or Boone County, MO. Since Solomon died in the late 1880s, well after Boone County, AR, was formed, it could well be that the obituary writer took what few facts he had, added them up, and came up with a wrong answer (remember, 2 + 2 = 5 for sufficiently large values of 2!).

With all that as background, my question is this - is there anybody reading this board who might have any information regarding the family of James Guinn Melson and Rosanna Ballew Melson, especially Solomon Melson, residing in the Boone County or predecessor area? I'll add I've found no clues anywhere I've looked in Missouri, although the Ballew/Ballou tribe was fairly prominent there in the decades before the Louisiana Purchase.

Many thanks in advance for any information anybody might be able to provide/share.

Bob Melson
Half human half snake story

HALF HUMAN AND HALF SNAKE
By S. C. Turnbo

Strange things occur every now and then on some part of this globe of ours. The Ozarks are no exception to this rule. A few years ago the St. Louis Globe-Democrat published a lot of matter under the head of "freaks and snakes", and a few correspondents sent in all sorts of snake stories for publication, some of which seemed to be entirely fictitious. The editor announced that he preferred accounts of actual occurrences, but for the sake of amusement, a little harmless fiction would be received. Some of the correspondents over did the thing by exaggerating to such an extent that their statements were rediculous. Among the rest the writer sent an account to the editor, of a freak child, which was published in the Globe-Democrat of September 22ed 1899. The following is the letter as published including the editors comments before printing the letter.

"A reader deprecates the tendency to ward exaggeration displayed by some of our correspondents, and submits the following.

"Protem, Mo. Sep. 11, 1899 -I have read the interesting snake stories in the Globe-Democrat, some of which undoubtedly originated in the craniums of your correspondents. While I do not admire fictitious snake stories, yet some of them are amusing and interesting for the ingenuity displayed in their construction. It seems to me, however, unnecessary to resort to fiction and exaggeration when so many strange freaks really live and move and have their being upon this green earth of ours. I want to tell you of an account given me by J. N. (Newt) Milum, a prominent merchant of Lead Hill, Ark. of a strange freak he saw during the Civil War.

"In 1863, when I was 14 years old," said Mr. Milum, "I was among a large number of refugees, who accompanied Col. Phelps regiment of Union troops to Missouri. Among the former was a family whose name if I remember rightly was Mannus. In this family was one of the strangest freaks born of woman I ever saw or heard of. The object appeared to be half human and half serpent, and about two feet in length. The largest part of its body was about the size of a man’s arm, and it had legs the size of one’s finger. The arms were still smaller, and its tail protruded to about the length of its legs. From the hips up it was human in form, except that its teeth resembled the fangs of a serpent. The head was the size of a tea cup and covered with hair. It was said to have been born in 1844 - nineteen years before. This strange being was kept in a coffee sack and was taken out each morning and evening to be fed. It attracted a great deal of attention among the soldiers, refugees and others, and was the object of much comment."

Mr. Milum said that the last he saw or heard of it, was on their arrival at Springfield Mo. The writer will add that Mr. Milum is reliable, and bears a good reputation for honor and truthfulness. It seems more than likely that some of the surviving members of Phelps’ command or others can give additional information regarding this remarkable curiosity."
S. C. Turnbo

Though I had never doubted Mr. Milum’s account of this singular formed child, in the issue of the Globe-Democrat of November 3erd, appeared a letter confirming Mr. Milum’s story which we copy verbatim.

A HUMAN MONSTROSITY

More about the Arkansas snake child. To the editor of the Globe-Democrat: Van Buren, Ark. October 20 - I was not much stuck on the snake stories that was published in the Globe-Democrat, until I read one from S. C. Turnbo, and I will say that he gave a very correct description of the same. At the time he speaks of I was a soldier in Col. Phelps’ 2ed Arkansas Cavalry, which was in camp at Cleppers Is Mill, near where the town of Harrison is. Our train was sent down on Buffalo to bring out a lot of refugees. The train returned well loaded with human freight, and among the rest the family with the Snake-child; that was what we all called it. I was detailed as one of the guards to escort the train to Springfield, Mo. I can assure the readers of the Globe-,Democrat that the account given by Mr. Turnbo is correct. The mother of the child was named Mannas, and she told me that the Snake-child was 19 years old. It was sick all the way to Springfield, and died soon after we got there. It would lie on a pallet and lick out its tongue like a snake, and its body would squirm and twist like a snake. It knew its mother from any other person. The snake-child had a sister that was two years younger who was very handsome. The snake-child was also a girl.

John A. Stevenson

As the foregoing is such an interesting case, the writer hopes others who know any about it will give additional information so that we may obtain a complete history of this uncommon strange formation of a child.

S. C. Turnbo

Next Story | Table of Contents

Ferguson Family in Carrollton--1894 forward

I am researching the Sylvester Ferguson (dob abt 1858) family that settled in Carrollton about 1894. Sylvester went by several names, Austin, Pert and Vester, was married to Mary (dob abt 1860), children John Thomas (dob abt 1879,Tom married Maud), Ida and Alvia. Some of the family returned to Springfield, MO after 1915 but I believe Sylvester and his brother remained in Boone county.

I haven't been able to determine when Sylvester died or where he is buried. Anyone researching this Ferguson family?

Sarah E. Reed is in the 1920 census of Boone Cp., Ark. alone running a dairy farm. I do not know if she died there (she was in her 60's in 1920). Also, her husband was George W. Reed and I don't know if he died there. They had 3 daughters, one was Millie (Reed) Uhl or Mrs. Joseph J. Uhl, one was Carrie Reed and the last was Nellie Reed. I know nothing about Carrie Reed, she was not in the 1920 census. The last is Nellie Reed who in April 1919 died in Boone Co. Ark. Does anyone have any resourse that can shed any light on this family? Thank you.

My husbands' great-great grandmother was Edna Earl Littrell,born in Boone county, but at this time,not sure what year. I'm at work and have all my info at home. When you work for a police dept, you never know when you'll have the spare time to do something for yourself. Trying to remember off the top of my head,she was 1/4 cherokee, had a
full sister named Ethel, and several half-brothers/sisters.
She is buried here in Seminole Oklahoma.

I know this isn't much to go on, but maybe it'll get me closer than I was. I will look up the specifics on her and others and send more. Thanks so much,

Denise Childs

Hi Everyone,
I would like to ask anyone's assistance in locating death info on my G-grandfather, Thomas HOWARD, b. 1855-56 in TN.
Last located on 1880 Boone Co. census where his wife is listed as Mary C. TURNER, b.16 Jun. 1853 in TN. With them on this census is a 10 year old girl named Violet,b. AR. and a 1 year old boy named Daniel Thomas HOWARD,b.04 Oct. 1879 in AR. Eventually, two more boys would be born to them, I just don't have data.
The next location of the family is in 1893 when Grandma HOWARD files for a Homestead land grand as a widow in Montgomery Co. AR. So for a period of 13 years from 1880 to 1893 Grandpa HOWARD either dies or just takes off and leaves Grandma with four children to raise. I have checked what online cemeteries I can in and around the Boone Co. area, but to no avail. I would sure appreciate hearing from anyone with info on Grandpa HOWARD.
Thanks to all and Happy Holidays.
Sandy in AZ.
Jones in Crooked Creek, Carroll and Boone Co.

I am looking for information on a Jones family that came to Crooked Creek abt 1859. In the 1850 census they were in Bradley Co. Tennessee with the father William Jones, Ky. and Matilda, VA. and several children including a James N. Jones, age 14. I found them in 1860 census in Carroll County, Crooked Creek. The mother, Matalida Jones was listed as head of the household, so I assume the father had died between 1856 and 1860. James N. Jones would have been 24 and he was not in the home in 1860. In 1870 I found the oldest girl, Elvina (Vina) Jones in Boone Co., Harrison (which was Crooked Creek, Carroll Co.) with the two youngest sons, William Nathan and Franklin Jones. The family story of James N.(Napoleon) Jones was he was in the Civil War in Hill's Ark. Cal. Vol. from 1862 until the end of the war. When he returned home, he found that his mother had been tortured by either two Union soldiers or bushwackers and had died of her wounds. He tracked one of the men down and killed him. He said he left a wife and two sons in Washington County (don't know year) when a baby girl the wife was holding fell out of the wagon and died. He married a Kate Austin in Yell County in 1874 and lived in Johnson and Pope County where he was killed in 1891.
I am not sure the family in Carroll and Boone County is our James N. Jones' family. I would like to hear from anyone who might have information on this Jones family in Crooked Creek.

Boone Co Cemetery Confusion

I am a bit confused about some Boone County cemeteries. I had a cousin, Rev Henry Morgan Redus and his wife, Jane that was buried in the New Milum Cemetery. According to the online inventory at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~arboone/newmilum.html, its says both were removed to "both removed/Lead Hill Cem.)west."

Can someone in the area fill me in on this cemetery, its location (can't find a lat/long or listing in GNIS), and if it has been inventoried? I can't seem to find anything on the Lead Hill cemetery. Unfortunately Find-a-Grave has Rev. Henry buried in his home state of Alabama in tle Old Nebo Cemetery in Lamar County. I know this is not correct. So I am trying to get this record straight.

Anyone in the area that can help get this straight I would appreciate it. You can reach me here or via email at larryvh @ brmemc.net

Thanks for any help in advance.

Larry Van Horn

Nicolas Martiau Descendant Association Registrar
Family Genealogy Blogspot: http://family-genealogy.blogspot.com/
Family Historian, Genealogy Instructor/Lecturer and Newspaper Columnist
Family Roots and Branches website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vanhornfamily/

Genealogy: Where you confuse the dead and irritate the living.
I am seeking information on my G-grandparents, Thomas and Mary C. (Turner) HOWARD. In the 1880 Boone Co. census I found where they had two children, oldest being a daughter, Violet A. or H., age listed as 10 years, born AR, a son named Daniel Thomas HOWARD, age 1, born AR. This son is my grandfather and his birthdate is October 4, 1879. My G-grandfather Tom lists his age as 24 years from TN and my G- grandmother, Mary, is 27 years of age from AL. I would appreciate any help I can get with ideas of where else to look for further information on these folks. Thanks very much.

Sandy in AZ

HAWKINS, James Pleasant Jr

JAMES PLEASANT HAWKINS, JR married "SARAH" (maiden name unknown, but was Cherokee) in about 1874/5 in Boone County around Leadhill area. They had two children, JAMES WILLIAM HAWKINS, born about 1875 and SARAH SUSAN HAWKINS, born in July 1879. "SARAH" the mother died in Nov 1879. James took the children to his parents home and they raised them. He remarried in 1880 to EDA MOORE and had another child, MARY MAY HAWKINS born in May after his death in Feb 1882. Eda later married a HANCOCK. James William (Will) married a FANNIE HANCOCK and moved to Fayetteville, then to Oklahoma. Sarah Susan married JOHN THOMAS MOTLEY, they had 5 children, two lived, ARKIE ELIZABETH and GERALD LEE (JEWEL), their children OLA AND ORLENA are buried in Carrollton Holler by their mother Sarah Susan, who died in 1913. The other son Donald Lawrence Motley is buried in Protem. Arkie Elizabeth married HENRY RAGSDALE in Protem 1925. They are buried in Raytown MO. I am their daughter. Jewel lives in Oklahoma. My question is - "does anyone have any information on the CHEROKEE "SARAH", what her maiden name could have been or what family of Cherokee's she was from? My grandfather would never tell my mother and her brother anything about their mother, they never saw any of her people, including the Hawkins, strange huh? I know there were a lot of Cherokees in the area and would like to know her family name if possible. She was probably born about 1853/4/5 - My mother's aunt was Myrt Motley Ashton who died few years ago there in Peel. She was married to Ernst Ashton. Years ago when mother was small, her other aunt "Tint" PRIDE told her that her grandmother "SARAH" was full blood Cherokee. Unfortunately, these aunts are gone now and I have no one to ask any questions of. My Uncle Jewel has verified the fact that they were told this as children, but were not supposed to tell anyone at school. They attended CHIGGER HILL and TURNBO school. any info would be appreciated.

I am trying to find the children born to Ridley Broomfield Wynns and Sarah C. (Crandall) Wynns in Arkansas around the year 1875 and later. I know that Ridley Broomfield Wynns date of birth is May 7, 1853 and I think that he had 6 children but need any information you could supply.

My grandfather was one of the children and his birth year was 1892. His name was John Roy Wynn. For some reason, he dropped the 's' in the name Wynns.

Thank You,
Marilyn Moline

Does anyone have stories, pictures, or information regarding Spring Lake located in Bellefonte, AR? My grandfather, Frank Robinson, dammed up the spring in order to form the lake. He stocked the lake with fish for the town folk. The lake was used for fishing, swimming, boating, and being baptized. Thanks for any information, stories, or pictures you can provide.

I have found a photograph of the Harrison High School class of 1987 and a copy of the commencement invitation, which took place on May 20, 1897 among my grandfather's things.
Graduates were Jennie Burns, Will Newton, Roy Smith, Emma Clendenin, Wade Andrews, Myrtle Sallee, Bonnie Crandell, Orphus York, and Alf Johnson. Diplomas were presented by J.R. Newman. Since there are 10 people in the picture, I'm assuming that Mr. Newman is the tenth. I will scan the picture and/or the invitation and email a copy to any who have an interest in this picture. Please put Harrison H.S. picture in the subject line so you don't get sent to the junk file.
