Ha...I have been looking for information on a event like this one that is part of my family history lore! I have a hand written history from my great aunt that talks about her grandfather, William Jones Estes, (aka "Jonesy Estes") who was born in Carroll/Boone County AR in 1832 and was "bush-wacked" by civil war renegades along the Mo/Kansas border in 1864.
I just needed to comment on this post as there are some very interesting similarities between the two incidents...family lore or not. I can find my great, great grandfather living with is family in the 1860 AR. census but nothing later than that and no gravesite, death notice or obit has been found for him. His wife's name was Tempe Hulsey Estes, he was named after his father's brother and is often confused with the older Wm. Jones Estes who lived in the same area during his life.
If you find a site or source that provides info on folks being killed by raider, renegades or bush-wackers in connection to Civil War activities, please let me know. This guy is one of two remain family members who's information continues to elude me. Thank you !
