Hutto's of Ashley County AR and Morehouse Parish LA

I am trying to find more information of the family of David A. Hutto and his wife Annie. I have located very little information. The family appears to go back and forth between Ashley County AR and Morehouse Parish LA.

In 1880 David Hutto is listed as Stepson in the household of William R. Jones and Amanda (Mygatt) Jones in Ashley County AR. In 1900 Dave is married to Annie and living in Morehouse Parish, LA. However by 1910, David is deceased and Annie is married to a H D Gains (His first name appears as Hanna or Harve or some variation). H D is much older than Annie and in 1910 they are back in Egypt, Ashley, AR.

David Hutto and Annie have the following children whose names are sometimes difficult to read and whom I cannot locate after 1910, except for Annie who in 1920 is listed as a widowed boarder in Ashley County AR. None of her children are with her nor are they located in any other census records.

According to findagrave.com, David, Annie, Robert and Leslie are all buried in a Lakewood Cem. in Ashley County. According to the 1900 and 1910 census the children of David and Annie are: Robert b 1891 d 1924, Fannie b 1893, Jimmie b 1896, Man? b 1902 and and Pete b 1904 (Pete may be a nickname and could be the same person as Leslie listed in the cemetery record)

Any information on this family would be appreciated.

Trying to find information/burials in Smith Cemetery in Ashley County, Arkansas. Would like to know if John H. Smith born about 1850 in Alabama, his wife Lucinda E. Vancamp Smith born June 1853 in West Virginia, died January 7, 1925 are buried here. Also children, Edgar, Lilly, Emory, Emily, Oscar, John Murphy and Fredrick Ester. Have located daughter Stella born 1892 and died 1904 buried at Wilmot Cemetery. Does anyone know if there was a newspaper in this area during that time period that would have published obituaries?

Graves of Eliza Ann Browder and children

I am searching for information on the graves of Eliza Ann Browder and her 4 children. She and her husband, Martin Van Buren Browder, left Florida and headed to Texas about 1874. Allegedly, Eliza and 4 children died of swamp fever along the way. I can find no documentation, explaination nor reasoning as to why they were in Arkansas. Family lore says that Martin buried his wife and 4 children in a "common grave" and fenced it off with cypress wood. He then continued on to Texas with his young daughter Belle Matilda. No word as to weather or not he left any other defining information on the grave.

Chaney Bible pages

Bible pages were found in a Red Roof Inn in Memphis, Tn.Have been told it was left there in July 1999. It listS John Thomas
Chaney married Mary Elizabeth Crawford in Bartholemew, Ashley Co, Ar. in 1875. Would like to give it a good home with
the Chaney family it belongs to. It does have other data such as children, dates, etc. Need proof of connetion.It is such a
precious item.

Married Rebecca Jane Sanders. Daughter of Keightly Sanders and Elizabeth Ford both stated to be from S.C.

I would love to know who James was and where he came from. My great Grandmother didn't seem to know anything about his family at all but she knew many things about Rebecca Jane.

Keightly show's himself in Cencus Records as being born in South Carolina but the Cencus Records show him in Amite, Franklin, and Madison Counties, Mississippi. He then shows up in Ashley County Arkansas where records show him as quiet a charactor. My great grandmother come to Milam County, Texas from Ashley County Arkansas around the Civil War.

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Ashley County, Arkansas as his home of record.

Soldier: LONZA ZEMERY BASS
Born: May 27, 1931. Black
Date of loss: October 14, 1952, MIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 17 families in Arkansas that have not been located. There is one family from Ashley County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

At the age of 35, he married Alice Iva (Ivey) Jones, age 20 at the time, on March 6, 1910. They were married in Ashley County, Portland, Arkansas. Abmintha A. Potts married to Thomas Galphin 5/01/1859 in Bienville parish. Abmintha's parents were William Potts (II) from SC and Rebecca Ann Howard. They were on a census with all children in Attala MS in 1850. One daughter:Leonora Potts marries William R. McCreight and is in a 1870 census in Morehouse Parish. Eventually Rebecca Ann Howard Potts wife of WilliamII and grandaughter Milledge Daisy Galphin are
in a 1870 census with Leonora and son-in-law William McCreight in Morehouse County. Milledge Daisy Galphin/Golphin eventually marries John Cicero Bains from Ashley County Arkansas.
Thomas Milledge Galphin lives with Mathias Ardis and wife Louisa in a 1850 Census in Bienville Parish. They are all listed as from SC
I believe Mathias Ardis is the uncle of Thomas M. Galphin as a Eliza Ardis is married to his uncle John Milledge Galphin.
If anyone has any info on these familys I cannot trace them from 1880 and cannot find them before 1840 Thanks,

Tucker Family in early to mid 1800s in Arkansas?

I am looking for a John, Thomas or possibly Alfred TUCKER that might have been living in Arkansas before 1845. The Tucker I am looking for might have married an Elizabeth Badeau from LA or MS. At one time we thought we had them connected to Jane Humphry, but that is not correct.
John Jefferson Tucker was born in 1845 in McComb, MS, the son of the above query.J.J. Tucker married (in 1875) Anneta Whitcomb of Covington St. Tam., LA. JJ. and Anetta named one of their sons, Thomas Brinsfield Tucker. There might be a Brinsfield connection. We are having a devil of a time finding out about his parentage. Family lore is very confusing and contridictory!

Does anyone know if there are any marriage records from 1859 in existence, or 1850 or 1860 census? I know some places have had fires destroy a lot of records. I don't know the early history of my gr.grandfather(Thaddeus C. Phillips)or his wife (Martha S.Bryan/Bryant?) who he married according to LDS record 13 MAR 1859. In the 1880 census they were listed in Long View, Ashley Co. He was born 09 SEP 1818, died 16 SEP 1894, buried in Norris Hill Cemetery near Fountain Hill, as was Martha, born 27 Jan. 1843, died 06 AUG 1905. I have no early information on either of them, and would like to know any more information, especially before 1859.

I am attempting to find a location of a site in Ashley cty. named Peacock School House. On a death certificate the site for the removable of the body was to this location. I would guess this was the name of a cemetery in 1921 that has been changed since that time. Any help appreciated.

Gladys Holloway (she spelled it that way but have seen it Hollaway in census) to Lauren W Gregg in Portland, Arkansas about 1917 or so. Oddly she is listed as deceased in one site being buried at the Portland Cemetery, in 1894. She was born in 1898! Needless to say I have learned to check and recheck things. Hello All, my name is Julia Davis I am researching my Ashley Co., AR roots and need help with the following.
My father was Will Davis born 1937 in Hamburg, I believe I located his father in the Ashley co. land records his name was Willie R. Davis born May 25, 1903 died Dec. 1977. I believe Willie R. Davis' father was Nate or Nathan Davis. I don't have any information on wives or other family members.
Also need look-up for Harriett Davis born 3-19-1891 died 9-1983 in Hamburg. I believe Willie R. Davis married Lucile Haynes in 1933 in Hamburg. I would also like any information on the Gilberts in Ashley co. AR 1880 to 1930's.
Lemuel E. Davis born 12-26-1897 in Ozark, Franklin, AR died 3-12-1972. His wife was Cora Harrison born 10-01-1893.
I found a census record for DeBastrop, Ashley, AR 1880 the following Davis family is listed: Felix 22, wife Anne E. 22, Martha daughter 4, and Lemuel son 3 months. I wonder if this family is connected to the Lemuel listed above?

I am confused because I find two places of death for her; 1) Bexar Co., Texas, and 2) Hamburg, Ashley Co., Arkansas. She married twice m1) Oscar Lewis Ballew Abt. 19 years old; m2) Bertrand (first name unknown). She and Oscar are found with his parents on the 1920 Grayson Co., Texas, but cannot locate anything else on her.

Two other daughters were listed...Ophelia, age 13, and Clara, age 10. William, Ophelia and Clara were listed as being born in Arkansas. Eliza was born in TN. Index on line for Ashley County listed Jan. 02, 2002 a Mrs Ethel Mae Howie, of McGee, but her obit. is not there, I supect, this is a lady I have looked for, a long time, as she is listed as 84 years old, The story goes, she was married to a Garner, they divorced and she took her maiden name back, Howie, and is buried under her maiden name in City cemt, in Crossett. Poore family in Hamburg late 1850s to 1860

I'm researching the move by one of my ancestors, Francis Marion Poore, to Ashley County in the late 1850s before moving back to Mississippi to enlist in the 13th Mississippi in 1861.

Francis and his wife Marthie had a son, George Washington Poore, born in Hamburg around 1860.

Before I write the Ashley County Courthouse for probate and other records, could someone tell me if land records for that period exist for the county? Are county tax records for that time existent? Are there other records that would be useful in locating my ancestor?

I'd also like to understand migration and what motivated people to that part of the state. Is there a good history of the region for the period 1850-1860?

Any help would be appreciated.
