1918+ marriage between Mrs. May Sutherland Porterfield and an Unknown FOSTER; & Where were they in 1920/1930?

I am looking for help identifying the first name, the marriage, and the death of an unknown FOSTER who married
May Sutherland PORTERFIELD after 1918. It is possible that this marriage took place in Little River Co., AR.

However, it is known that May Sutherland PORTERFIELD had also previously resided in Baxter and Marion Counties, so she may have returned to that area after the death of her first husband in 1917 (Little River Co.).

I am also trying to find where Mrs. Mae (May) FOSTER [DOB: 1898] was living in 1920/1930.

May Sutherland of Flippin, Marion Co, AR 1st married 7 Feb 1917 George Porterfield, who died 15 Dec 1918, Little River Co., AR

Note:
Mrs. Mae Foster of 'Cotter, Baxter Co.', AR was listed in her sibling's 1971 obit.

Between 1976 - 1984, Mrs. Mae Foster was listed as living in FL in her other sibling's obits. I believe she may have returned to AR by 1984 since proof was found that she left FL at the time of her last sibling's death and did not seem to return to her previous residence.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Kay, FL
MehdiFakhar@aol.com

I am looking for a death (Charlotte E. "Lottie" Nelson) born abt 1871 in Olney, IL) and don't have a clue as to the exact date, somewhere between 1920 (she's in the census in Lawrence County) and late '20's. In 1918, she was in Black Oak with her son, Frank Edmiston,in 1920 in Lawrence County with this same son. I could keep writing for death crtificates @ 10.00 per or is there a way to view the certificates and determine which is the correct one? I'm pretty sure she died in AR and very possibly in the early 1920's. Thanks for any help!

One of my dreams in life since the age of approx 6 is to grow up and to find my grandpa's family as he died six months before my birth and I know nothing or no one to help. My biggest dream now is to find my g-grandpa's (Arthur Louis Kennedy who married Allie Pearl English) birth state so I can find his mom and dad. Unfortunately there is a chance my life isn't going to last as long as I would have liked and I am in a hurry. I'm a two time cancer survivor (dysgerminoma) with 15 surgeries to my credit and now I have an abnormal test result to take care of soon. I want to accomplish at least one thing I have set out for in life and that is to find the mother and father of my great grandpa. To do so I need the state he was born in. Census records list it and I need access to Polk Co AR--Hatfield in 1940 to look him up but I do not have it. I wouldn't write on here if I wasn't pressed for time but I am. Does anyone have access to the Polk Co AR census for 1940? I wouldn't write this unless it was an emergency. I have left many queries when I did geneology for fun but it seems more important now because I have to complete at least one goal in my life. Please don't write back telling me Im pathetic for writing this. I am a strong Christian and I bet my soul every word is true. Please help me.

My great grandmother was named either Mary or Susan McClain. She is said to have died in Roger's AR sometime around 1913-1915. We are unable to find an obit, a burial location or any information but a family member told me that her mother went to try to find the grave and it was supposed to be on a hill in or near Rogers. Does anyone know of a cemetery where there's a hill in or near Rogers? Are there any places where they may have buried a person with little or no money?

We can't find her young daughter that may have died about the same time and may have been buried with her either. Her name is Mattie McClain and she would have been about 4 years old.

Their Reward: Freedom

Can any one tell me which Jacob Mooney this was. I have numerious Mooney ties in Tennessee and Arkansas but need to place this one.

1989 FALL
BLACK ARKANSANS
PAGE 6

Jacob Mooney’s Slaves Carry on Without Him for Years
Their Reward: Freedom
WILD CAT SHOALS— Around 1811 Jacob Mooney came to Arkansas by flatboat from McMinnville, Tennessee. With him were a man named McDonald, four black slaves, and four mysterious individuals said by old timers to have been “Melungeons” — supposedly descendants of a lost tribe of Israel that had settled in America before Columbus.
Be that as it may, Mooney’s boat must have been quite large, because according to an inventory in the hand of his descendants, he brought with him: “a large brindle cow, two black and white spotted pigs, six red hens and a speckled rooster, two guineas, one runty but friendly bull, one bushel dried yeast foam, twenty kinds of seed, one hogshead black powder, ten pounds of flint, an anvil, forge, one liquor still, one hundred bolts of cloth, one gross of needles and sewing thread and one demijohn of hops.”
Mooney and company poled up the White River to Wild Cat Shoals and conducted a lively trade from their boat while they built a store and two cabins. Constructing a bellows of tanned deer hides, the slaves managed to improvise a crude smelter where they fashioned bars of lead and occasionally of silver. Ned, Mooney’s black overseer, brewed a paw-paw brandy that proved a particularly popular trade item.
By fall, McDonald and Mooney were anxious to return to Tennessee. McDonald yearned to see his wife and Mooney was eager to acquire one. They loaded up their boat with lead, silver, furs, wild honey, and paw-paw brandy. Accompanied by the Melungeons, they set off down river as the first snow began to fall, leaving the trading post in the keeping of Ned and the other slaves.
When they returned to civilization, they discovered that the country was in the midst of the War of 1812. Both McDonald and Mooney joined up with Andrew Jackson, but McDonald died a few days before the Battle of New Orleans. Mooney married shortly after his return from the fighting.
Nine years passed before he returned to Arkansas. Mooney feared the worst, but at his first stop at an inn near the mouth of the White River, he was served what was reported to be the finest French brandy. He recognized it as once as none other than Ned’s paw-paw liquor.
Later he stopped in Liberty at the home of Major Wolf, a famous trader and Indian agent, who assured him that Mooney’s slaves had all taken wives among the local Indians and had hired a man named Hightower to pretend to be their owner.
Mooney would write in his journal: “Late yesterday I came in sight of home. I could hardly believe my eyes. The store was much larger, besides I counted ten new buildings, good sized fields full of growing crops and little (black children) swarming everywhere. I landed the boat and went ashore, leaving my hands to secure it. Everything is as beautiful as we hope heaven is going to be. A comely Indian lass was tending the store. When I asked about lodging for the night, Ned’s voice called from the back room, “Is that you, Master Jake?” We fell into each other’s arms and shouted, like we had just professed religion.”
Jacob Mooney was so moved by the loyalty of his slaves he had Major Wolf draw up papers granting them their freedom. Mooney continued to commute between Arkansas and Tennessee and did not settle in Arkansas permanently until the death of his wife in 1832. By then his former slaves, now free men, had either died or migrated westward with their Indian families.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Hazel

I am very excited to have found this forum! I have been researching family history for a couple of years now. Have hit a wall - - my great grandmother, Martha Barbee born in AK 1883. Her parents: S.W. Barbee (TN 1847) and Josaphine (NC 1860). The records stop with the 1900 census. Siblings of Martha: Ollie V (born 1889 Choctaw Nat) and McClellan (born 1894 Cherokee Nat). 1910 census lists additional siblings Ed, Virr (? spelling) as well as nieces/neph Jim, William,Rina, Adros all born in OK between 1902-1909. In addition, McClellan's name is changed to George B. on 1910 record. One of Martha's own children, Gertrude Carey is listed on 1910 census b. 1903 Indian Territory.

I am confused because at the time of the 1900 & 1910 Census' they were in Scott County Lewis twp. AK, yet some of the children were born as stated above. Oral history has it that we are Cherokee through my grandmother's line. Any help, comments, information is considered a major blessing!

My grandmother was Mary Ethyl Steward. She was born 1/21/1907 in Missouri. She married William W Harris June 24th 1922 in Fontaine Ark. On the back of marriage licence there is a signature for Or E Reed. She always said she had a half brother name Thomas Alford. She also said she was adopted. I found her in the 1910 census where she is living with her grandmother Mary Medders They have Thomas Alford listed as Alford Thomas. There is also a Nannie Thomas and a William Reed listed. It dosnt give her mothers name. I remember my grandmother telling me when I was young that her real father's name was White and he worked for the railroad. She said he left when she was a baby and never returned. I need to know if anyone has information. My Grandmother died in 1992. My father and one uncle is still living and they dont have any information on who her mother or father was. Thanks

This would include my great-grandmother's parents and their children, her grandparents and their children, and her children and their children. My great-grandparents (John M. Smith and Mary M Weir) were married on were married on 10/10/1886.

Some of our Arkansas Family Surnames are: Smith, Weir, Cobb, Ray, Camp, Head, Fay, Terhune, Casey, Bartrow, White, Neaveille, Snodgrass, Jacobs, and James.

Any help will be much appreciated.

God bless.
Robert Harris was born Born: 3 Dec 1886 in AR and Died: July 1972, buried at the Watts Cemetery in Leslie, Searcy, AR.

He married Sarah Frances Davis in Lead Hill, Boone, AR on July 14, 1912.

Sarah was born July 5, 1891 in Arkansas and Died: June 26, 1970 also buried at the Watts Cemetery in Leslie, Searcy, AR.

I have good reason to think Robert's parents names were John Harris and Mary Walters. Both the 1920 and 1930 census records says that Robert's parents were both born in AR.

know that Sarah's fathers name was Mack. 1920 census records says her father was born in AR and her mother was born in TN.

What is the best way to confirm or prove who Robert and Sarah's parents were. I have found info that leads me think Sarah's mothers name was Sarah Hill (LDS info). I have found a Mack Davis that was married to a Sarah Hill from TN. How do I prove this? Where do I go from here?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

If someone is familiar with this line of Canard's , could you please get ahold of me ? I am trying to piece together my brother-in-law's family for him. And not only for him , but for my niece as well. His father's name is Samuel Kent Canard son of Samuel David Canard etc. So if anyone has photos of Canard's , information that I can enter for the living relatives etc. It would be appreciated greatly. Thank you , Stacey TruckDriver1972@aol.com

* I am just getting started on this line and it has proven confusing , yet intriguing to say the least !!

In the AGS Book, "Arkansas Births Prior to 1905, Vol. III," there is record of an Albert Jefferson McKinney b. 2 Aug 1887 in Ouachita Co., AR; mother is Mary Jane Poole; father not shown. I'm hoping someone from the AGS familiar with this book can tell me where this info was obtained from and if there is the possibility of getting any more information on this record. My grandmother (and huge brick wall) was Emma McKinney b. in AR 28 Jun 1872 and it was thought her mother's maiden name was Pool or Poole and she had several siblings, one possibly named Albert.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Historians with the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville

For decades, researchers who wanted to examine Arkansas’ civil-rights history had to seek it in different libraries across the state.
Now, it’s online.
Historians with the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville have posted 400 Arkansas civil-rights documents, photographs and other images on a Web site.
While the project focuses on the 1957 Little Rock Central High School desegregation crisis and the rights of blacks in Arkansas, it also covers civil-rights issues related to Japanese-Americans held in Arkansas internment camps during World War II, women and homosexuals.
“One of our overriding objectives on all of this is to share our holdings with the people of Arkansas,” said Tom W. Dillard, project director and head of the special collections department at the University of Arkansas Libraries in Fayetteville. “This is their heritage, this story of our people. We need to get it out there and share it with people.” The project — “Land of (Unequal ) Opportunity: Documenting the Civil Rights Struggle in Arkansas” — is available online at Scipio. uark. edu /.
The Web site is named for Scipio A. Jones, the attorney who led efforts to overturn the death sentences of 12 black sharecroppers who were condemned to death after the Elaine Race Massacre of 1919. The accused were tortured into making false confessions, Dillard said. Jones secured the sharecroppers’ release, although he never overturned their convictions.
Dillard and others spent more than a year compiling and scanning documents for the project, which cost about $ 67, 000, including direct costs and indirect costs such as staff salaries. Funding from the Department of Arkansas Heritage and a $ 20, 000 Arkansas Humanities Council grant covered most of the direct costs, Dillard said.
Historians say the project is the latest effort of libraries across the country to make their collections accessible to more people.
Clayborne Carson, editor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. ’s papers and director of the King Institute at Stanford University, said online projects like this one are part of a “democratization of historical information.” “When I first started researching King, only a small number of scholars were able to go to Boston University and the King Center and spend a lot of time in the collections,” Carson said. “There were maybe two dozen researchers in the world who were familiar with all of these materials.
“ But we’re gradually moving toward the day when thousands of researchers throughout the world will be able to gain access to the same kinds of documents,” he said.
Carson said there are similar online collections of civil- rights materials in other states, such as the Web site maintained by Alabama’s Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
“Land of (Unequal ) Opportunity” organizers decided to include civil-rights documents dating back to the state’s founding, including slavery and the state’s first civil-rights laws passed during Reconstruction, he said.
One example of items in the online collection include a married woman’s property rights act passed in the 19 th century. It stated that a woman’s property did not automatically transfer into her husband’s possession upon marriage, Dillard said.
There are also essays from Japanese-American students who were sent to one of Arkansas’ World War II-era internment camps.
“They can be very poignant,” Dillard said of the essays. “Here are these young Japanese-Americans trying to be very loyal to their country, even in a time in which their lives have been totally disrupted and many of them have lost all that they own, but they are still trying to be good patriots.” The collection also includes one audio file, which is a recording of the song supporting Gov. Orval Faubus titled “We Like Faubus.” Laura Miller, historian at the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, said the university’s online collection offers a wide range of perspectives on civil rights, from segregationists to those seeking change.
“I think this is actually a wonderful resource,” Miller said. “I see us using it quite frequently. I think teachers would be able to make great use of this.” Miller said she has already recommended the Web site as a research tool to a California museum and two high school students from Nebraska.
The Central High historic site’s staff members are working on a similar project. They plan to post online segments of oral histories conducted with people who experienced the desegregation crisis. Other plans include posting archive materials and producing podcasts about Central High, Miller said.
Author and historian Grif Stockley, who has published books about the Elaine massacre and civil-rights leader Daisy Bates, said he was “delighted” by the online collection.
The site gives the general public an opportunity to browse through documents that nonhistorians would likely never see. In addition, it allows historians to view some documents that they may not have previously seen, Stockley said.
But the Web site must be understood as a collection of artifacts, he said.
“You can’t browse through something like this and feel like you really understood the entire continuum of African-American, black-white relations in Arkansas,” Stockley said. “But what it does allow you to do is go through and pick out specific events.” While most of the materials in the project came from the University of Arkansas’ special collections department, other institutions also contributed materials, including the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at the Central Arkansas Library System in Little Rock; the Riley-Hickingbotham Library at Ouachita Baptist University; the Ottenheimer Library at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock; the Torreyson Library at the University of Central Arkansas; the Arkansas History Commission; and the Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives in Washington, Ark.
In addition to the images and documents, the Web site offers lesson plans for junior high school students and five digital posters, all free of charge. Dillard said the project staff plans to continue posting other images and documents on the site in the coming years, with the goal of growing from 400 items to 1, 000.
“I hope people will come away realizing that although this is just the tip of the iceberg,” Dillard said, “that we have a long and involved and interesting history of conflict over civil rights in Arkansas and that conflict is certainly not finished yet.”

http://www.nwanews.com/adg/News/216328/
William Richard Hare/Rebecca Newton Arkansas SC

I'm seeking information on ancestors of William Richard Hare. It is believed that he was born around 1858-1860 in northern Arkansas. He Married Rebecca Newton also from Arkansas. William and Rebecca had seven children,Henry Russell Hare(My Grandfather),b. Jan 1 1897 in Yellville Arkansas d Dec. 1968 in Keota Haskell County OK,Oscar,William, Millie,Mattie,Florence,And Minnie. Rebecca "Newton" Hare died around 1901. William Richard Hare and the children then moved west to Siloam Springs Arkansas, then on to the Cherokee Nation at Stidam OK. north of Eufaula OK. He then moved with his family back to Arkansas in the Martinville area north of Conway, where he lived until his death in 1939. His son William lived in Harlingen TX. for many years. Rebecca Newton had a nephew Robert Newton who taught English at a college in Searcy Arkansas. It is believed that both the Hare and Newton families came to Arkansas from the area of Cherokee County South Carolina and that the Hare and Newton families have Native American Cherokee Ancestors. Are any of you folks familiar with this branch of the Hare family?
I'm trying to find the parents of Sam Y Carnahan. Or any of his siblings. He was born about 1875 I believe in Arkansas. He was married in Boone county to a Cora Ruckman (sometimes called Ora). He had six children Lizzie, Bessie, Pearl, Clara, Theodore & Benjamin. Any information about him would be greatly appreciated. I get to him and I lose a trail can't find parents siblings, nothing.
obtaining Arkansas death certificates

I am need of an Arkansas death certificate to hopefully prove a relationship. I am confused about whether or not this is possible. It looks as though the Arkansas Department of Health will require close kinship for anything less than 50 years ago. However, my request will be for someone who died 60+ years ago. I do not live in Arkansas. The name in question is shown with the death date on the Arkansas Death Index. Does anyone know the rule for this and if I will be able to obtain a certificate? Thank you?
Researching Mailes family from Arkansas. Only record I have is of W.W. Mailes on 1930 US Census, residing in Maricopa Cnty., AZ with sons Billie & Teddy Mailes. It states on the Census record that W.W. is a widower. I have no name for his wife or for him (just initials W.W.). Census also states that he was born in Arkansas, and so was his father. His mother was born in Missouri. His sons, Billie and Teddy were born in Oklahoma. Any information whatsoever would be greatly appreciated, as I have been stuck on this name for over a year!
Could someone please do a look-up for me on a William Norton, (middle name may be LaFayette) believed to have lived in the Heber Springs, Arkansas area. DOB unknown, butI'm guessing it to be around 1863 (this is the year his wife, Julie Ann Tinker was born).
Their children's names were Arthur(dob 1884), Eller(dob 1894), Martha(dob 1880) and John(dob 1886). They may of had more children, but these are the only names I have.
Any information that can be found, would be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Tammy

Nancy Ann BLACKWOOD DAVIS - how can I find any death information?

I am attempting to locate death information for Nancy Ann DAVIS. She was last living in 1910 in Pleasant Hill, Newton County, Arkansas, in the home of her daughter Martha Ann DAVIS and husband Henderson DAVIS. At that time she was listed as 70 year old widow. Nancy Ann has not been located in any cemetery in this area. Nancy Ann was born about 1939 in South Carolina or Georgia to James BLACKWOOD and Mary. They moved to Arkansas between 1850-1860. Nancy was first married to a BELL then to Toliver Pittman DAVIS, in Newton County, Arkansas. Can anyone lead in me the direction where I can possibly locate information on her death place, if it is in Arkansas? She is not located on the 1920 census, and so I assume she died between 1910 and 1920.
