I was wondering if there are any directories or newspapers while he might have been there?

Thanks
Dawn

I'm looking for Pasquale Asevedo or Acevedo-I believe he was born in 1880 or 1888 in Zacatecas Mexico. He may have gone to Morenci, Arizona to work in the mines in 1910. His wife's name was Maria-could also have been Marina Valle. He ended up living in Redwood City, California. He had two sons-Larry and Raymond. Any information would be appreciated.

Re: Toll Road from Clifton to Solomonville, Arizona

From: Danny Haralson dkharalson@hotmail.com
It was in 1899 that Francisco Montes, Vicotiano Carrasco, Andres Serna and Emilo Lopera started building the shortcut by hand. They built the toll building from scraps of whatever was available and the station was called "La Grita". The fee was 50 cents for a team and 10 cents for a single rider. The team price was later reduced to 30 cents because of proposed competition. The four way partnership reduced to Francisco and Jose Gonzales and after a few years Gonzales sold his interest to Luther Green who operated a stage line from Solomonville to Clifton. This sale occured before 1905 because Green sold his part to Ben Clark and Morg Merrill in May of that year. The final years for the road began in 1914 when a better route was begun using prison labor. It was completed in 1916 and is now known as the "Black Hills Byway". It is a beautiful and interesting drive leaving Highway 191. I have presented an article and presentations on two graves at the beginning of the Byway belonging to two Mexican prisoners who tried to escape in 1916 and were killed. I hope this helps.

I am a local historian and board member of the Graham County Historical Society and have been researching Joshua Bailey, "father of Safford" who had the first store here in Safford and named the town. He had the stage station between here and Bowie, Az in the 1880s on into the 1890s. I have been there but nothing remains of the old station. I have been looking for a photograph, if one exists, of the Bailey Wells Stage stop. Please contact me at dkharalson@hotmail.com if you know of one. Thanks. Dan Haralson

My grandfather was George B. Gamble. He built his home in Lone Star, which used to be a two story Victorian style house. Across the highway, there is a little old building that used to be a granary. My grandmother cooked in this little building while they were building the new home and their youngest son, William Beeler Gamble, was also born in the granary. My grandfather was Graham County Treasuer for a couple of terms. I have a picture of his stage and teams and I know my father drove stage for him for a little while, as he had driven Concord stages in Old Mexico for W.C. Greene. My family lived in Solomonville where my dad was buying a farm from Louis Fruetenthal. I started to school there in 1929 in the 1st grade, but when the crash of the Great depression hit, my dad could not make his payment, so we moved to Northern Arizona to a little dry land farm his cousin owned. The rest of that is a long story! I remember hearing the name Ben Clark and Morg Merrell many times. The last time I went to Safford, I could still see a few bits and pieces of the old toll road. I turned 90 in August, so that is the reason I said I had waited too long to hike down that canyon from the pass to the river! I love old landmarks and old historical places and hate to see them destroyed. Such is progress.

I will get on Google earth and look at that area. Thank you.

Nancy E. Place Brown

Who was your grandfather? My grandfather, Ben Clark, operated the stage until its closing in 1912.

Remnants of the toll road are visible on Google Earth west of the pass. And the tank ponds mark LaGrita but nothing looks like an old road east of the pass. It must have been obliterated building the new one as reported. On Google Earth you can click back in time to see where 191 was as early as 1997-98.

Thank you so much for the information. That surely answered my question. It's too bad that they destroyed so much of the old road when they put in this new road to the new bridge. I had always wanted to hike from the pass down to the river on the old road, but have waited too long to do that now. Thanks again,
Blessings,
Nancy E. Brown

Francisco Montes and three friends started the toll road in 1899 by making some trail improvements and constructing a toll station east of San Jose that they named LaGrita. Ownership soon passed to Luther Green who also operated the stage line over the road. Both road and stage line passed to Ben Clark and Morg Merrill in May, 1905.

Source: Graham County History, Vol. 2, Ryder Ridgeway Collection.

I am trying to find the date when the old Toll Road was built. I have read that a group of Mexican farmers from the San Jose, Graham County area, got together with picks and shovels and put the road down a canyon close to where highway 191 goes today. In fact if you know the area, you can still see bits and pieces of the old road. There was a stage station called Cornado Station across the river from the present Three Way Station. The toll for using this road was 10cents for each horse and 10cents for each wagon. I know that my granfather ran a stage and freight line there for several years, as well as different men who had leases on it. It cut the distance from Solomonvile to Clifton by many miles. Perhaps someone can tell me or can tell me where to find the information.
Thank you,
Nancy E. Brown

When you post, it's important to provide some criteria information about the people you seek, such as full date of birth, etc. In this case, you are seeking their siblings, but without information on them and what information you already have, this makes it harder to search. You identified they were "octoroon" on one census. I've been doing genealogy since Adam and Eve and hadn't heard of this word for mixed race... It's not important to identify in these messages.

I did identify my research and did find the family Felix of Manuela, but nothing further, without knowing what you may already have, I may be duplicating your research.

A family tree owned by "t_mariee1" contains very limited information about Tomas and Nellie, and their three daughters and two sons.
Hi, Lujan, I see from your post that you are a grandson of Amadeo Fajardo of Arizona. I am trying to connect the Safford County, AZ Fajardos to the Fajardo family tree I have from New Mexico (many from Hatch area). I also have a DNA question about a Lujan link. Please contact me so we can solve this puzzle! Thanks, Jill

The 1910 Census of Safford, Graham County, Arizona
C.M. Kirkland, age 40(1869/1870), born in Texas to both parents born in Tennessee, living from his own income (no employment type identified), was renting. This was his second marriage of 1 year.
Eva Z, wife, 34(probably 34, 1874/1876), born in Texas to father born in Tennessee, mother in Texas, mother of 1/1 living.
Ethel Gray, age 13(1896/1897), born in Oklahoma to both parents born in Texas.
--Census mistakes on age and places of birth are enough to not trust this as being accurate. Ethel's parents place of birth could be the common era of showing the place of birth of the two above her and not the true place of birth of her real father.
-this census was enumerated on 25 April 1910, so, as you indicate they could have been married anytime after 25 April from 1908.

The 1920 Census of Chickasha, Grady Co, OK
(If this was the one you identified)
C.M. Kirklin (as written and transcribed), age 55, born in Texas to both parents born in Tennessee. Widower. Living as a farm laborer, in the home of the C.T. Taylor Family. C.T, 28, born in Missouri; Pauline, 27, born in TX

FamilySearch.org:
Ethel Gray, was born 29 Sep 1896 in Burnette (there is a Burnett in Pottawatomie County), OK, mother: Eva Kirkland. Ethel married James C. Walker on 18 Feb 1913 in El Paso, TX. James, born Cloudcroft, N.M. age of 24 at the time of marriage (1888/1889), died on 5 Mar 1924 in Otero County, New Mexico, spouse name: Ethel B. Walker.
--in 1901, a Wilburn Gray obtained 160 acres of land in Pottawatomie County. Indian Meridian, Township 6 North, Range 4 East, Section 25, the SW Quarter. This is near the "Gray Oil Field." ("probably the one found in the 1910 Census in Avoca, Pottawatomie, married to Laura with several children, born about 1853 in Arkansas). Probably NOT connected to Eva by marriage.
There were only four "Wilburn" in the 1900 Census, amazingly all had a mother "Eva."

Marriage records in Graham County, AZ:
http://www.graham.az.gov/Graham_CMS/Clerk.aspx?id=420

Between your information and the family tree posted by the other, I don't see proof this was the same person. You or they might have the proof of the connection, but there were MANY having the same names.
Hi Colleyville,
The O'Haro Family Tree, trees.ancestry.com/tree/16193767/person/351369761 contains info about Charles and his first marriage. I mention this because you might want to contact her.

In 1870 Charley and his parents were living in Beat 5, Cherokee, Texas.
Their neighbors were Eldridge, Tabitha and Polly Kirkland.

William Kirkland, b. AL, 24, farmer.
Sarah, wife, b. TN, 23.
Charley M., b. TX, 2.

In 1900 Charles and his first family was living in District 153, Township 7, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory.
Charles M. Kirkland, head, Race=In, b. Sept 1867, TX, farmer.
Rebekah, race=In, b. Indian Territory Jan 1873, had given birth to one child who was alive in 1900.
Lulu May, Race=? [can't read] b. Indian Territory March 1890.

I searched before 1910 and after and didn't find a Eva Z. Gray or Eva Kirkland and her daughter Ethel Gray.

Here's a long shot but Eva Gray Kirkland was born in Texas.

Name: Mrs. Willie Critz
Born: Sept. 1904, TX
Died: 27 Dec 1943, Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., TX.
Father: James Henry Parrott b. GA
Mother: Eva Kirkland, b. TX
Source: Texas Deaths 1890-1976.

You can contact the Graham County Arizona Superior Court to inquire about Charles and Eva's marriage license.
Graham County Clerk of Superior Court
County Courthouse
800 Main St.
Safford 85546
928-428-3100

Their web site didn't mention how to get a copy of an old marriage certificate but another web site they have marriage and divorce records.
Successful Searching!

In 1929 or 1930, I was in the 2nd grade at the Solomonville, Arizona school. At Christmas time, we drew names to exchange gifts. Maria Peru from San Jose drew my name and she embroidered a little doilly for me. It has red flowers and green leaves. She said her mother chocheted the edging. I have keeped this cherished little gift all these many years. We left Solomonville in 1932, moving to Northern Arizona. That was during the Depression. I have often wondered about Maria, who she married and if she is still alive. If any one knows her, or anything about her, I'd love to know, as I'd love to let her know I still have the precious doilly.
Nancy E. Place Brown

Looking for a marriage record for C M (Charles Mathews Kirkland) and Mrs Eva Z Gray - about 1908-9. This would have been the second marrige for both of them.

Did they marry in Arizona? - probably not because

Charles M was a resident of Chickasha, Ok prior to 1910 and Eva Gray had a daughter born in OK about 1897, BUT

This couple was in Safford, Graham Az in 1910 with her daughter Ethel Gray 13. They were married 2 times - 1 year last time.

THEN Charles M was back in Chickasha, OK - a widow by 1920 census. No Gray Family with him. His first wife died - and I do not know about the second.

I have not found this Eva Z and her daughter before or after the 1910 Census.

Any help with info about marriage of C M and Eva Z gray would be appreciated.

Did you miss type and meant to say that you found no mention of him in the 1910 census? He clearly is in the 1900 census, but look for him in surrounding counties such as Pinal, Gila, etc. the miners moved around quite a bit, and they also traveled to New Mexico to work the mines there. Also, depending on when you think he died, part of Graham county became Greenlee in 1921. My grandfather and his brothers were all born in Graham county with the exception of the last one who was born in the same town, but the county of Greenlee . I also checked the death indexes for Arizona and find no mention of a Jacob Chandler.

This was one of the most courageous men I knew. As a twelve year old I was given the privlige of knowing Mr. Fajardo better than the previous years of my life. This man endured the economic hardships as well as changes in financial and agricultural industries. He was the epitome of the difficulty associated with of growing up on his own and becoming successful. My personal view was that he was looking for land, dignity and a future for his children. I always seen Mr. Fajardo as an advocate for the oppressed.
Every morning that I was able to wake before 4 a.m., I would walk in on him reading his Bible, the spanish version, as this is what he taught himself to read. When I did right....I was praised. When I did wrong....I was disciplined. To this day I appreciate the disciplined administered as it taught me to be steadfast in what you believe.
There is not enough time nor words in the vocabulary to describe how Mr. Fajardo effected my life. I thank Amadeo Fajardo for sharing this with everyone that chooses to read this.
I am delighted to say the Mr. Fajardo was my 'Grand-Father'.. he helped shape my future...and that of my children...his legacy continues...as Amadeo states.
Thanks Grandpa!

He is shown on findagrave.com as dying 9 June 1900. Thee's a photo of him and a grave plaque that unfortunately doesn't include dates. Search at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gs& (the URL for his page is too long to post)

Strangely, he's not listed on genealogy.az.gov, the AZ site that shows birth and death records linked to certs. In fact, there's only one death shown for Graham Co in 1900, so there's obviously some problem with the county's records for the year, or at least as they were provided to the state.

Hope this helps.

You have probably found the answer to your question but if not, go to the site for Tressie Evans Post and Howard Orville Post and you will find reference to Stella Post Nelson, their daughter. I remember her well when she was head of the yard goods department of J.C. Penny on Congress St. She always had a pencil stuck in her bun on the back of her head. She also handled the sale of the L.D.S. garment in that store. the building still stands in Tucson where the music store now is. She married the brother of my Uncle Nate Nelson. We knew the Post family well in the early years of the Tucson L.D.S. branch. You might also contact Marie Luke Despain, her niece.

You are welcome. I noticed a note on another board from you about the same Mallory info, but figure you could do a really broad search on all locations. I can sure get lost on that website for hours, always good fun to see what was worthy of print in the newspapers.

I'm not sure if you will find your answer here, but try checking out the Library of Congress, Chronicling America website, that has scanned newspapers.

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/

I'm pulling up various Mallory names, including the Graham Guardian, March 22, 1912, which has a G.B Mallory in an article regarding him being a road overseer.

I am not connected to the family, just out playing. I assume you folks know about the Arizona Birth and Death site. I am for sure pulling up death certificates there for Leonard and Stephen, both sons of Henry Clay Jewell.

http://genealogy.az.gov/

And I don't know how many Henry Jewell's are out there, but check out the Library of Congress, Chronicling America website, that has scanned newspapers.

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/

A wild story in the Arizona Republican out of Phx, Feb 19, 1892. Without transcribing the whole thing for you, the top two headlines of the article read "The Deed of a Demon", "Mrs. Jewell choked into insensibility by a Negro".

I'm also pulling up Jewell's on the Cochise County website at
http://mycochise.com/

The Graham Guardian paper of Sept 5, 1913 has an article regarding increased assessment and includes Block info for both Welker and Wanslee, which you may be able to interpret.

Looking for any information on Santiago "Jimmy" Orona. He was killed in a crash near Clifton, Arizona in 1973 or 1974[possibly '75?]. He married my Birth Mother in February of 1972 in Las Vegas. They lived in Chandler, Arizona until my Birth Mother's death. The only information I have found is that he may have been from Juarez, Mexico. This information I got from my Birth Mother's death notice in the newspaper[Jan.1973]. There are Orona's in the Chandler/Phnx area but do not know if they are of any relation. Any help would be so greatly appreciated.
Seeking date & location of divorce action on Mary L. (Mariah L.?) Girdner vs. Michael C. Girdner

This divorce record is probably in Gila or Graham county, Arizona. It would be dated about 1890 up to sometime in 1891.
Particulars - Girdner married Colcord on 31 Dec 1889 in Pleasant Valley, Gila county, Arizona. The marriage lasted less than 2 years. Girdner was known to live in the area of Globe and Clifton, Arizona, and is buried near Clifton. The brothers of the wife lived in the vicinity of Colcord Mtn, Young, and Payson, AZ.

If this record is located, please let me know the date of the final decree and the county in which the record was found. Thank you. Claudia Glass, Hutchinson, KS
