Hi Joey,
We were wondering if you could send us a copy of the Pinal Cemetery, that shows the old section of the cemetery. This cemetery really needs much help.... the vandalization is not right but its already done. Makes us sad to see it.
Jack and Jackie

I am looking for any information about my Great Grandparents Antonio Fritz and Belen Orosco. Both of them were born in Arizona and resided in Globe. Antonio was born about 1898 and Belen about 1902. I don't know when they were married or when either of them died. Together they at least six children. I have only been able to identify two, daughter Henrietta (b. June 18, 1920) and my grandfather Ramon (b. August 30, 1921). I have had difficulty tracing this part of my family tree because they apparently relocated back and forth between Arizona and Mexico and I lost contact with this branch after my parents were divorced. Also, it is my understanding that this family was of German and Hispanic descent. If anybody can assist me with this please let me know.

REGivens1120: This must be the fire my Grandmother told me about in the 1960s. One of the aftermaths was everyone had to go down and report your age, marriage and family deaths for all the records were burned up in the Church. She also admitted she 'modified' her age to ten years younger...' it's a womans' right ' !! Good Luck Hunting,

Chuck

1800 might just be a bit early. These Kellners married into the Maldonado family of Globe and ran business to a high rate of success. Along with the Fisk family, they all did quite well, I;ve read and have been told. Thanks for the catch......fat fingers sure don't help.

Best Wishes,
Chuck

I have been trying to verify a fact in my father's life story that there was a major fire in Globe sometime between 1910 and 1915 when a good portion of the town burned. My grandfather was a saloon keeper and they took the whiskey out into the street to protect it and the men all started drinking it and got drunk and failed to fight the fire. Does anyone know about this fire? My father, Joseph Craig Givens and future State Mine Inspector, Cliff Murdock, were locked up in jail for their own good - as they were trying to protect the whiskey and the mob didn't want them getting in the way. It is a great story but is it true?

Re: Richard Matthews

This is confusing because there are two Richard Matthews. They were about a year apart in age, grew up about two miles apart in England, and worked about two miles apart in Arizona. Both were miners and sailed from Southampton to New York in 1907.

William Richard Matthews, who appears to have gone by Richard, was the son of Samuel Matthews and Elizabeth Jane Ellery. His birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1879 in St. Austell Registration District. He was born in St. Blazey on September 23, 1879.

In January 1907 he crossed the border from Canada to the U.S., en route from Riondell, B.C. to Arizona. His father was Samuel in St. Austell. On May 7, 1907 he arrived in New York aboard the S.S. New York en route from St. Blazey to Erie, B.C. His younger brothers Samuel John and Mark were with him. Richard was still single and a miner on these occasions. In 1910 he was a mill man in McGill, White Pine County, Nevada. He was still single – listed as Richard Mathew.

His future wife, Ellen Jane Goard, was still living with her sister Mary Grace in St. Blazey in 1911. Both were single. She arrived in New York aboard the S. S. St. Paul on June 21, 1911, en route from St. Blazey to WhitePoul [?], Nevada. She was listed as single and a housewife!

I don’t know when or where they were married, but Richard Matthews and Ellen Jane ‘Goord’ had two daughters born in Miami, Gila County, Arizona, in 1913 and 1917.

Richard was drafted on September 12, 1918, at which time he was a shipbuilder for L.A. Shipyards Co. in San Pedro. He and Ellen lived at 718 East 1st St., Long Beach. They were still there in 1920, along with the two girls. At that time, Richard was a hooker [?] for an oil company.

Richard is supposed to have died in the U. S. on August 13, 1926 but I haven’t found any supporting documentation. I have not been able to locate Ellen and the girls after 1920.

Ellen possibly returned to the St. Austell area where an Ellen Matthews and Samuel Penney were married in 1930. Ellen J. Penney died there in 1962 at age 83, which would put her birth about 1879. Just a possibility!

The other Richard Matthews was the son of Phillip and Levinia Matthews of Penwithick, St. Austell – just a couple of miles from St. Blazey. His birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1878 in St. Austell Registration District. His marriage to Mabel Stoneman was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1903 in St. Austell Registration District. Richard & Mabel were listed in Penwithick in the 1911 census, along with children Howard, Dorcas & Ada.

Richard arrived in New York aboard the S. S. Mauretania on December 21, 1907, en route from St. Austell to Lead City, South Dakota. He was married to Mrs. M. Matthews in Penwith, and he was a miner. He arrived again in New York aboard the S. S. Olympic on August 16, 1911, en route from Penwithick to Victor, Colorado. He was still a miner, and Mrs. Matthews was still in Penwithick. On May 16, 1915 he arrived in New York aboard the S. S. St. Paul. He was still married and still a miner. He was born in St. Austell and his father was Phillip Matthews in St. Austell. He was en route from Cobalt, Ontario to Globe, Arizona. The latter is just a couple of miles from Miami, Arizona. His name appeared on the manifest for the S. S. Aquitania which arrived in New York on September 13, 1919, but was crossed off. He was married and a miner, and had last resided in Globe. He was headed to Globe where he intended to remain for 2 to 3 years. He did arrive in New York on November 10, 1919 aboard the S. S. Baltic, headed to Globe. His father was P. Matthews of Penwithick, St. Austell. He also appears in records of several border crossings between the U.S. and Canada.

Richard not only appeared in Miami, Arizona in the 1930 census, but he was there in 1920. He was listed as Richard Mathew and was a miner. His family was not with him.

I am interested in further information about William Richard Matthews and Ellen Jane Goard. I am researching Ellen's maternal line.

Hi, I don't think the archives do lookups any more. If you still need the obit on Hubert, I'll be glad to photo copy it and mail it to you. I see it in the AZ online obit index: http://mesarfhc.org/search/azobits.htm

Email me a US mailing address and I'll mail you a copy.

Jim heyyojj@cox.net

Hi,

There isn't an obituary volunteer for Young. However, You can contact the Arizona State Archives, www.lib.az.us/archives/email.aspx and receive a copy.
Hi,

I checked the Arizona Genealogy Birth and Death Certificates, http://genealogy.az.gov/ but he wasn't listed there.

He doesn't appear in Ancestry (except for your family tree) or familysearch.org.

You could contact the Gila County Recorder's Office, 928-425-3231 and see if they have a death record for him. If he was working at a mine way out of town, his death might not have been recorded. Successful Searching!

Harry Elgin Brown married Edith Clare Crawford May 27, 1915, in Globe, AZ. He was killed in a mining accident at the Miami Copper Company mine Nov. 22, 1916. Edith left Arizona and moved to Utah. Edith was my grandmother and her 2nd husband my grandfather. Edith and Harry had 2 children, Crawford Elgin "Bus" Brown (died 1955) and Clara Dee Brown (died 2006). The only information I have about Harry is that he was born in Missouri and also had a niece, Kathryn Brown who incidentally was living in Globe, AZ at the time of his death. I have a copy of his death certificate and newspaper articles about his death. I know he is buried in Globe. I have no other information about him or his family. Any help appreciated.

Dela-
Well Andres rest off FSR 300 just north of Pine on the road to the Forrest Service Look-out tower off of HWY 87. He was murdered by a Knox Lee in 1887 and is documented by a writer of History Stan Brown. Andres was an Indian fighter with General G. Crook, a vaquero, a mule skinner, an early homesteader in St. Johns, AZ.

I am looking for someone to look up an archived article from the Arizona Silver Belt newspaper from January 30, 1978. This microfilm can be picked up at the Arizona Silver Belt newspaper and brought somewhere to read it on a microfilm reader(possibly the courthouse I've been told)
My husband and I were in a near fatal car accident just west of Miami, AZ on Jan 29, 1978. I am hoping that there was a newspaper article on the incident that I could use to obtain more information on what happened.
I am willing to pay for your service!
Dorinda Burrell

Article found in the Mohave County Miner newpaper, June 17, 1921. Library of Congress, Chronicling America. I searched Teague and Whiskers...

http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/

RED WHISKERS, OUTLAW, KILLED
E.P. Burnett, known as Red Whiskers, an escaped convict who has been hunted by a large posse of citizens and officers, was killed by officers in the mountains near Globe Tuesday last. Burnett was suspected of the murder of Marion Teague on the night of May 22, after he had made his escape from prison. He was known as a bad man and the officers took no chances with him when they came upon him. Every officer in the surrounding counties and a number of blood hounds have been on the trail night and day and his killing will cause the people of that country to breathe easier.

Janet,
Thank you so much for the reply. Yes, it is Willy Myrtle Cross that I'm looking for the information on and it was from the find-a-grave website that gave me the clue that she had moved to Arizona. I also had her parents names already but it was nice to see it confirmed on there. I have tried to contact the person who submitted the info on there but haven't had a response.

I'm trying to locate her parents and any siblings and so I thought maybe the obituary would give me a clue. I will go the website that you provided and request a lookup.

Thank you for your help!
