I am no relation to the Haywards of Globe, however, I have worked on an archaeology project in McMillenville, near Globe. J. Hayward and family were living there in 1880. I am trying to find any information I can about the families, where they went from McMillenville and life in McMillenville. If you can help in any way I would appreciate it.
Thanks, Dee Owens dgowens@comcast.net

According to George Brunson who listed the Bacon Cemetery interments of members of the Bacon family on Find A Grave, the cemetery is 12 miles off of SR 188, on FS 60 (A Plus road) above the old TIN Ranch on Salome (Sally Mae) Creek. It was placed in an Indian ruin at the time, probably for security. Tonto Basin is in Gila County, Arizona. I don't know if this cemetery is on private land or not, but you can probably find that information by contacting George Brunson at dadbruns@msn.com.
Good luck, Nancy

If it may help-
If you are not aware of it, you can find the death certificate for John Lockway here:
http://genealogy.az.gov/
just place the surname in the box and hit submit:
you will be taken to a listing of Lockway's-including his two children-Howard and Myra, and a death certificate for a son that was stillborn. The certificates are printable with adobe acrobat.
John's certificate says he was adopted by Lockway at the age of 3;father's surname is given as "St.Austin",and that his mother was unknown, and both parents were born in England.
If you will search for Lockway here:
http://abish.byui.edu/specialCollections/westernStates/searc...
You will find record of his marriage to Zadie Rountree on Mar.22,1909 in Gila Co.

In the 1910 Globe census, is shows that it is a second marriage of one year for both-wife is shown as "Sadie".There are two children-it is written badly, but I think the elder is a girl named Muriel age 8,born in NM, and Ruth who is 2,born in AZ.
The 1920 census for Globe, children are Ruth age 12,Howard age 8,and Myra age 6.

John Lockway reg. for the WWI draft in 1918 Globe;birth date given as Feb.6,1873;nearest relative is his wife, Zadia Lockway.

At the time of his death, John Lockway was divorced.
In the 1930 Globe census, Sadie is then married to another British Columbian- Price Vail.

There is an obit available for Zadie Vail-which may give infomation on the Lockway children?:
VAIL, ZADIE 82 Arizona Republic 20 27-Dec-1963
{name,age,newspaper,page,date}
Should you choose, a copy can be obtained here:
http://www.lib.az.us/archives/email.cfm
Make sure your postal address is in the "street address" box, and place the information above in the "other information" box.

I am looking for John Lockway. He was born in 1873, possibly British Columbia, but was possibly adopted by the Lockway family.

He came to Globe about 1905, worked as a miner. He died in 1927 in Globe and is buried in Globe Cemetery.

Are there any old newspapers online from 1910 to 1927? Is there any history of Globe for that time period?

Thanks for any help.

Keith

I have found that my grandfather died at a early age and work for either Miami coppermining co or inspiration coppermining co. I would advise you to contact the genelogy at Arizona Univ.State they have information on this search. Also you can also go into Ancestry.com and that has been very helpful for me. It gave me a start on my search. I now have death cert. and Mexico board crossing. My grandfather died in 1930 and my grandmother in 1933,giving birth. She lefted behind three children that were little and were awarded to the court state of az. I feel your need to find this information. I hope that i was to be of any help. My email address is Leti.Blan@yahoo.com if you need any information that i could assist you in. I know how hard it is to try to get any information during that time. Also you might look into the Az library. They also have some information during that time. Hope i was of any help to you.
ANDREW VANDERBELT QUEEN of Florence, AZ -- actually Eloy, AZ

There have been several notes looking for Andrew or Vander Queen of Florence, AZ, on various boards. I decided to stop in at the Florence, AZ, Historical Museum to see what I could find -- well, he was a law officer, but he lived in nearby Eloy, not in Florence.
Findings located at the Florence Historical Museum, 715 S. Main, Florence, AZ 85232.
1. Multi-page listing of Pinal County Lawmen compiled by Stan Benjamin of Tucson -- lists A.V. Queen, a Pinal County Deputy Sheriff, 1949, Eloy area.
2. Newspaper article entitled Eloy, 1940: Eloy Shakes Off Past Reputation As Tough Town, Shows Steady Progress,
pub 24 Feb 1965 in the Casa Grande Dispatch, Pinal Co. Edition. Extensive article with several photos. Written by Jack Hurley.
Photo 1 of A.V. Queen with this caption: "Presently enjoying the quiet life of a motel owner, former deputy A. V. Queen poses with part of the collection of weapons he took from persons he either arrested or helped arrest, in the days when Eloy was billed as the toughest town in the nation. At leat one thir of these [weapons] are murder weapons, Queen says."
Photo 2 of A.V. Queen with this caption: "A.V. Queen points to the spot where the man who killed Deputy Ed Smith was hidden the night he killed the feared and respected lawman with the double blast of a shotgun. The killer, Willie Bishop had recently ..." Remainder of caption is cut off.
Photo 3 caption: "Eloy's Frontier st. today. Motel owner and former deputy A.F. Queen (left) is standing on the spot where a former postmaster of Eloy, "Judge" Garrett, died as the result of a wild gun battle in which a deputy sherrif was injured and hte cause of the trouble, a man named Neale, killed. A total of 31 shots were fired in the 1948 street battle."
2. Newspaper column by Lowell Parker, part 2 of 3, entitled "Eloy's Troubles Began With Cotton Boom of WWII.
Published in the Republic of 3-9-76. Excerpt:
"... The average deputy lasted about two years before he was killed, crippled, scared off the job or just quit in
frustration. Lucky was the deputy who wasn't shot at more than once every two weeks."
"On who lasted longer was A. V. Queen who stayed on the job six years, despite threats and attempts on his life, before resigning to operate a private business...."
3. Book entitled Eloy Enterprise with shelf number 979.179 SL0 at the Florence (AZ) Historic Museum (address above):
page 9: "... and Av Queen, the oldest deputy in seniority in Eloy, who has been tested by fire. ..."
page 50: re instance of domestic violence, "... advised Mrs Jones if anything unusual occurred, for her to call the office and either he or Deputy Queen would come out and put Avery in custody until he behaved. ... At 6:30 pm, Night Deputy Deputy Queen reported for duty. ... heard the phone ringing. When Queen picked up the phone he heard a woman's voice, a voice cryingand the sound seemed like an animal trapped and about to die. ..." Results: Mrs Jones saved, Mr Jones resisted arrest and was killed after vowing that he would "only go if he was dead."
Harry Elgin Brown; Mining Accident in Miami--1916

Harry Elgin Brown was my grandmother's first husband. He was killed in a mining accident at the Miami Copper Company, on Nov. 22, 1916. The death certificate states he was buried in Globe.

I recently paid a visit to the Miami-Globe area. The Arizona Silver newspaper was helpful in providing a microfilm of the 1916 issues. Unfortunately, the microfilm copy was hard to read, and the equipment unable to magnify. I was told that the Miami Public Library also has microfilm copies of the paper, but that their machine was broken. I wasn't able to visit the library on that day anway, as the library isn't open on Monday.

I am hoping to obtain an article concerning the accident, as well as any obituary information. I have not yet been able to locate his grave, and I am hoping that the newspaper information might be of some help. I would appreciate a lookup from anyone who might have access to this newspaper.

Phenix NM transfers

I am interested in obtaining any information about a group of Phenix,(the spelling is correct)NM residents who came to Globe in 1895. A couple of the names were: Ed Lydell, and Goldie Elliott. It was a group of saloon owners and working girls who were run out of town in Phenix to greener pastures. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you have not discovered them yourself:
various birth and death certificates are online/printable for the family here:
http://genealogy.az.gov/

Being Eastern European/Slovene the name spellings written down vary widely--the husband is Mato/Mike Vuletich the wife is Janja Raguz,Janje Regus,Jennie Ragus, and Jennie Rogers. On her sons death certificate she is "Genevieve".
Those of us with this ancestry can have a good time figuring out spellings! :o)
