I just stumbled across your post written several years ago and hope that you will run across mine!

I am also related to the Berutto-Caretto family of Bisbee, Arizona. My grandfather was James Berutto who was born in Bisbee. His parents and most, if not all, of his siblings were born in Alicia Superiore in the Piemonte region of Italy. One of his sisters may have been born at sea while the family was immigrating.

My sister-in-law recently found an article in a 1921 edition of the "Tombstone Epitaph" which highlighted a singing recital of Baptiste Berutto and a Miss Caretto.

Nick
Don't know if I responded to your email of 2003 as my luck with message boards has not been the best.
Anyway, please let me know what you know about your parents and other ancestors as we could trace it back to Cochise if that was possible. Cochise had only two sons, only one had children and that was Niache. Several Niache descendants still live on the Mescelaro Reservation near the Ruidoso, and they could help confirm whether you are or not related to Cochise. On the other hand, Nino told a lot about Cochise and others that was inaccurate and of no historical value other than to further his own stories and people's interests in him.
Nino was not related to Cochise. The Chiricahua Apaches at Mescelaro agree 100 percent he was not related to Cochise in any way.
If you want to contact me further on this, please use info below rather than message board.
Bob
1644 West Laredo Street
Chandler, AZ 85224-8243
HOME 480-732-0211 CELL 480-593-0368
rjstahl@asu.edu

Greetings
Sorry for the late response to your reply of 2005.
For whatever reason, just got a new message and several other old ones popped up for the first time.
Nino was one of the last buried in the 'old pioneers' section of that cemetery because if he was who he said he was, he would certainly have been an old pioneer of the Tombstone area.
Nino's wife, not being either that old or a pioneer to the area was buried in the newer section of the cemetery.
I have photos of his grave site, but thank you for offering.
Hope all goes well.
Bob in Chandler, AZ

I have no information on Nino Cochise "BUT" i do have the 4
silver medals produced by Marshal Everett l. Brownsey of Tombstone. He took the press and blank medals into the Dragoon Mountains and stamped them at the historical spot honoring each event. The four are "the sign of Cochise","the death of Cochise", "broken treaty", & "the living Cochise" the 5th medal, Cochise Honored was not minted due to the poor health of Mr. Brownsey. These medals were minted in the early and middle 70's. i am willing to sell this special set to anyone interested in this HONOR to Nino Cochise. email ceniza2849///2yahoo.com
Have you possibly looked at his death certificate to see if it has his birth location or his parents names? Maybe that information can give you clues as to where to start looking. If you can find information on his parents as well, you may be able to look search census records.

I'm not from Douglas. I currently live in Phoenix, but my family is mostly from Seattle. My knowledge of Douglas is limited. I know it is a mining town in SE AZ right on the Mexican border. Douglas has a historical society.. http://www.douglasazhistoricalsociety.org/
They may be able to provide some ideas to help with your search. It is likely your ancestors were involved in mining. The Calumet and Arizona Company was probably the company that ran the mining operation in Douglas at the time. You should try to see if the mining records could provide any information about your family. You would be amazed at what they kept track of. The Az dept of health services, office of vital records should have birth information for that time period. I know in my marriage record search for 1914 I had to scan through microfilm. I would check with them on how to possibly obtain birth records. Good luck.

Danny is Dianne's only child. Danny is still living and lives in Willcox, Arizona about 40 miles from us. We live about 24 miles north of Douglas. We visited Danny (our cousin) and his wife 5 or so years ago and still occasionally email. If you do an ancestry.com search on Jesse Howell Fisher, there are several trees with information back one or two generations from Jesse. There is local Cochise County "Pioneer times" history associated with Jesse - good history :). I will send you a private email with my personal contact info and we can go from there to help you with additional info.

Thanks for your response. My research shows so far: Jesse Howell Fisher and Mary (Graham) Fisher had two sons and a daughter (Gladys). The two sons were Edward Donald Fisher (b:9/7/13) and Gerald James Fisher (b:9/15/11). Gerald( your Uncle Jerry)and Martha Fiest were married in 1936 according to the records I found. Richard Gerald Fisher (my wifes father) was born in 1938 and died in 1994. Richard is buried next to Jerry in Douglas when I visited the cemetary a couple of years ago. Richard had a sister Diane (Dillman) who has since passed. Richard married my wifes mom in about 1960 when he was in the airforce. I could not find Danny could he be Edward Fishers son? Is Danny still alive? Do you live in Douglas or nearby? I am in Arkansas so I have to research everythine online. It is good to hear from someone in the family, I have been searching a long time.

Is Richard Fisher and Mary your wife's parent's names?
Gerald (Jerry) Fisher was married to my Aunt Martha (Leist). Gerald is Jesse Fisher's child. I know Aunt Martha and Uncle Jerry only had one son, Danny so I think that means your wife must be Richard and Mary's child???

Thanks, I actually have the original magazine. This was his M.O. He would go from place to place scamming people. He was in prison for this in Washington, Arizona, and Idaho. There were several other arrests in various states over the years also. He left my family in Seattle after being pardoned. He continued with his scams and his collection of wives until his death in 1929.

Nineteen hundred and eleven was a bleak year for the working people of Spring Valley, Illinois. Industry was drying up, and jobs were scarce. So, naturally, residents were delighted to see the billboard below—with its carefully painted bricks and its canny perspective—rise like a promise on a hill above the Rock Island tracks. Nor were they disappointed by the man who put it there—a smooth drummer named William L. Bessolo. From a platform at the depot, he told his hungry listeners that once the factory was producing his patented wrenches, prosperity would return to Spring Valley. All he needed was a little working capital.

Speaking in Italian to the largely immigrant population, Bessolo offered shares of stock. His wife sat beside him in silence, but helped his pitch by being, as residents recall, “a good-looking woman. ” The picture of her and Bessolo bears this out; the child was probably theirs.

When an official of a local land company began to accuse Bessolo of fraud, the inventor responded at a mass meeting: couldn’t people see that work had already begun on the factory? The townspeople backed Bessolo, and eventually gave him ten thousand dollars of their money. Then, one morning, he was gone.

Frank Martinelli, a retired plumber, remembers entering the Bessolos’ apartment after they had skipped. “All we found was a case of champagne. They were living high off the hog. I helped drink it. I wanted to get something for my two hundred dollars.”

That was all the satisfaction Spring Valley citizens ever got. They did press for extradition when word came through that Bessolo had been arrested for fraud in California, but the county supervisors couldn’t afford to spend any money on the proceedings, and the inventor went to jail on the Coast.

Our thanks to Herb Hames, editor of the La Salle, Illinois, Daily News-Tribune for sending us this cautionary tale, and to Mrs. Cyril Sweeney of Spring Valley, the owner of the photograph.

We continue to ask our readers to send unusual and previously unpublished old photographs to Carla Davidson at American Heritage Publishing Co., 10 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10020. Please send a copy of any irreplaceable material, and do not mail glass negatives. AMERICAN HERITAGE will pay $50.00 for each one that is run.
Tool Inventor Scam in Cochise Co. in 1912

I am curious if anyone out there has any ancestors that were involved or impacted by a scam by a tool inventor. His name was William L Bessolo. He came to Arizona and was able to convince miners, mostly Italian, to invest in his tool company with the promise of land near San Diego as a perk. I have found multiple articles in the Bisbee Bee and other papers of the time, just curious if there are any family stories handed down. I know he was able to take money from people in Bisbee, Tombstone, Morenci, Clifton, and Douglas. He was charged with mail fraud and plead guilty. He spent 11 months in the Yavapai County jail in Prescott. He was with a woman whom he called his wife. Her name was Felicia McCoy Bessolo.

The information I have, Alton, is as follows: William Earl Jr. Simpson was born on 11 Jan 1934. He died in 1939 in AZ. So he only lived a short time. That is the only child I am aware of.

Bill Simpson
Burlington, NC

drbillsimpson@gmail.com

p.s.
Re: Nino Cochise, Looking for any information on him

This might be hard to follow but I’ll try to keep it simple. My wife’s great aunt’s husband’s sister was married to Nino Cochise. Great aunt’s husband placed into my hands a large knife and sheath along with a pistol explaining these items once belonged to Nino. I always thought the items belonged in a Natural History museum rather than the bottom of a dresser drawer. Great Aunt died years ago, her husband died years later-they had no children. Great aunt did have a daughter from her first marriage.

Dave- gladesman@hotmail.com
