Gov. Sheakley is a distant cousin (1st x4), from Sheakleyville, Mercer Co., PA and I am trying to find out where he lived when he was in Alaska, and if any of his family members were there with him. He was appointed United States commissioner of schools of Alaska by President Cleveland in July 1887 and served five years; studied law and was admitted to the bar in the United States District Court of Alaska in 1888; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1892; Governor of Alaska 1893-1897. I think that in the early years he was "stationed at Fort Wrangell" (according to a Mercer Co., PA history), but beyone that, I know very little about the personal side of his years in Alaska. If anyone can help, or give me some ideas about where to look, please post here or contact me directly. Thanks!
