Dory, I too am looking for information about my Grandfathers sister who was sent to the orphanage in Eklutna. For some reason, it's like it never existed. Her name was Annie Alvarez and was born around 1921 somewhere around Bristol Bay. Somewhere in my file I do have a copy of a class roster from that orphanage. I can dig it up and see if your mom is listed as well if you'd like.

~Jessica

Dory Smith wrote:
> I AM LOOKING FOR ANYONE THAT KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT
> MY MOTHER (RUTH ULEN). SHE WAS BORN 3/10/1921. HER
> MOTHER (ELIZA HARRY) WAS MURDERED 1923, SHE WAS PUT
> IN ST. MARY'S ORPHANAGE, THEN SENT TO EKLUTNA.

Dory, I am assuming you mean an orphanage in St. Marys, Alaska? The Jesuits ran a boarding school there, which might also have functioned as an orphanage, though originally it was 90 miles downriver at a place called Akulurak, until in the 1940s the river along there (on the Yukon River delta) had silted in so much that they moved upriver to St. Marys. So if that's the orphanage your mother was in after your grandmother's 1923 murder, it's likely she was first in Akulurak. There is further information about the history of Akulurak & St. Marys at the Alaska Community database at http://www.commerce.state.ak.us/dca/commdb/CF_CIS.htm and even more at the website of the Church of the Nativity in St. Marys at http://www.cbna.info/churches/saint.html .

Eklutna is an Alaska Native village contained in the Municipality of Anchorage.

In any case, I would recommend writing to village authorities at St. Marys, and/or to village authorities in Eklutna. You can get contact info for both places from the same website given above.

Even better would probably be to contact the Catholic Church, Diocese of Fairbanks, which is the diocese that St. Marys falls under. Their address:

Diocese of Fairbanks
1316 Peger Rd.
Fairbanks, AK 99709

(This address came from the page http://home.att.net/~Local_Catholic/CatholicUS-AnchorageAK.h... .)

(Note: this thread was originally posted in the message board for the Southeast Fairbanks Census Area of Alaska. As administrator of that board, I moved this thread to the board for the Wade Hampton Census Area, since that's where St. Marys is located.)

-- Mel

Re: Jim Douglas in Marshall, AK in 1940s (my father's dad)

Hey Wassily, let me know if I've got this right:

Your father's father was named Jim Douglas, who was in Marshall in the 1940s, but you're not sure where he came from or where he went. You're not sure who your father's mother was, but it may have been Okalena Riley. You also don't know where your father was born, but he may have been born out-of-state. He had some siblings but they are dead now.

Even though you're trying to find out more about your father's father, it would help to know info about where/when your father was born, & anything you know about his siblings even if they're dead now, because those pieces of information might help to find out more about your grandfather. For example, you might be able to get records about their deaths that also tells things about their parentage.

Can you provide more info?

-- Mel

There is probably no newspaper or funeral home for Nunam Iqua (formerly Sheldon Point), which is a village with a population currently of 204. It's accessible only by air or boat -- as are most villages & towns in the Wade Hampton Census Area, & in lots of other parts of Alaska too.

If there are any obits for your relative at all, more likely they're in the Bethel or maybe even the Nome newspapers. That said, I have access to two large libraries in Anchorage (university & city) that have the states papers. So if you can tell me the name of your relative, I'll try to look it up next time I get over to one of those libraries. I have some other library research to catch up on there too, so I can just add this to my research list.

-- Mel

B J, you might try writing to village authorities in Sheldon Point, which is now known as Nunam Iqua. Here is some contact information (which I got from the Alaska Community Database at http://www.dced.state.ak.us/dca/commdb/CF_COMDB.htm ):

Organizations with Local Offices

CITY
-------
City of Nunam Iqua
P.O. I can still see the cemetery markers in my mind. (The cemetery as I recall was pretty near the office of the Village Public Safety Officer, which is who I was doing business with that day.) I hope the city or village council can lend you a hand.

-- Mel
