George F. Bartholomew 1857-1907 Died Valdez, Alaska

The Denison Review
March 6, 1907
HE DIED IN ALASKA
Telegram Announces Death of George F. Bartholomew in the Far North
On March 1st Mrs. George F. Bartholomew and daughter Belle, who are visiting at the Kuehnle home, received a telegram announcing the death of Mr. Bartholomew at Valdez, Alaska on February 28th.

Mr. Bartholomew had been for over a year in charge of the Valdez office of the Railroad Construction Company, building the Copper River railroad from Valdez to the copper fields of Alaska. Mr. Bartholomew had written but a few weeks ago that he had the grippe but was able to be about. This letter was received by Mrs. Bartholomew but a day before the telegram announcing his death. We are informed that the body will be returned to his birthplace at Valparaiso, Indiana for interment.

Mr. Bartholomew was a son-in-law of Hon. H.C. Laub and was well known to many Denison people. His wife had planned to go to the coast to meet him in the spring and both she and her daughter are prostrated with grief over his sad and untimely death.

Hi, I have just taken pics of an old cemetery in Valdez, Alaska. It used to be called the "Chinese Cemetery" (which is weird because there is only one man of oriental origin buried there), but has been re-named "Pioneer Cemetery". It has many graves of the first people coming to Valdez. Anyways, I wanted to find out the best place to upload them to.

We have a few photographs of the El Nathan Children's Home, though we don't have much documentation about it. I believe it was originally attached to the hospital. When the hospital burned down in the 1940s, the Children's Home and the hospital were rebuilt as two separate buildings.

Valdez in the 1950s and 60s also had the Assembly of God Children's Home, affiliated with the Assembly of God Church; I don't know if there is any connection to, or overlap with, the El Nathan home. I've never heard of the Hughes Children's Home, but I think there was a Hughes family in Valdez in the 50s.

I hope this helps -- feel free to email me at curator@valdezmuseum.org for further discussion.

Andrew Goldstein
Curator, Valdez Museum & Historical Archive

Avalanche in Valdez abt. 1904

Looking for information on a avalanche that occured in Valdez, Alaska about 1904 taking gold miners lives. Looking for a James "Jack" Williams that died in it. I don't know much about the newspapers in that area to know if there is an obituary or an article regarding the event. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you for your time.

I see from some of your other message board postings that there were also theories he might have been in California during the great earthquake (what year was that?), or in the merchant marine.

I'd recommend rewriting a query, with the subject header as above, and including the information about where specifically in Minnesota he was last seen, as well as the names of his siblings, alternate spellings of his surname, etc., and to post that to the "Unknown county" board for California, and the message board for the merchant marine (found under the "topics" message boards).

Good luck,
Mel
