The major churches were Kwikpak (near St Michael), Unalasks, Kodiak and Sitka. She may have been at the childrens home in Anvik run by Father Chapman, an Episcopal priest.

Frances Warring in Hoonah, AK

I am looking for information about my great-grandmother during her time in Hoonah, AK.

Her name was Frances Warring (born Frances Girard in 1881). It appears she left Washington state in the 1930s following her husband's death and lived in Hoonah at least until the 1940s - but possibly beyond that time. These are only two facts that I have pointing to that idea:

* Aug 1939: From Alaska Journal: Owned floating king crab cannery with O.H. Wood. Icy Strait brand of packaged king crab
* Oct 1944: From her brother's Washington State obituary (listed her living in Hoonah)

She died in Tacoma, Washington in 1970 but I am interested in her life from when she left Washington until she returned as there is no other information for that time.

Thanks for your help!!

I am looking for any information about my great-grandmother while she lived and worked in Hoonah.

Her name is Frances (nee Girard) Warring. She moved to Hoonah in about 1934 after her husband George (a deputy sheriff) was killed here in Washington.

Here is an article from 1939 Alaska Journal that I found:

"The little floating cannery operated by O.H. Wood and Mrs. Frances Warring near here is busy packing king crabs and believed to be the first and only plant in Southeastern Alaska processing this variety of crab. Mr. Wood does the fishing in the Icy Strait area with the boat Valkyrie while Mrs. Warring tends to the operations of the cannery. The crabs are being packed under the Icy Strait brand."

This is about the only information I have and been able to find. According to her obituary, she left Alaska in 1951 and returned to Washington.

I would greatly appreciate any information that you may have on Frances' life in Hoonah. Thank you,
Brian

I was stationed in Kodiak and along with my wife completed adoptione in May 1971. Ron's mother was full bloood Eskimo but unfortunetly got involved with a white guy who got her pregnant. She was forty and because of the situation was unable to raise him. there may have been a half sister Karen and a couple of brothers all of whom suffered from drug and alcohol issues. That is not much to go on but something.
Gary Cain, Sandy, UT

I haven't used these boards much ... read the guidelines and hope this is ok to share.

The Kasilof Historical Society has cemetery information on their website. If you select Kenai City Cemetery you will be able to search a listing for that location. Both of them appear to be listed in Section P, Block 1 of the cemetery.

Here is the information extracted:
P1-3 Richard C. Miller Feb 7, 1973 (Murdered in Sterling. Possibly buried in Kenai City Cemetery. Husband of Josephine.)

P1-5 Josephine (Pitka) Miller Mar 26, 1918 – May 11, 1983 (PMC records is buried in the Kenai City Cemetery. Wife of Richard. The Millers homesteaded on Kalifornsky Beach Road. Lived there from 1958 to 1974.)
You may want to try contacting the Carrie McLain Museum in Nome as they possibly have archival newspaper or other records that could be of help. The staff there might also be able to connect you to locals who know a lot about the mining history and may have known or heard of Ralph and/or Tommie. There are quite a few of people in Nome whose families have mined on the Seward Peninsula for generations.

A special thanks to both of you for your research work. I, or we, as I am in contact with the person who's tree you referred me to, have been searching for the past few months on this. A marriage license may exist in Nebraska?? but I hate to request one from there if I am not sure, more money spent for nothing!! Then again, they may have never married? All we have is a picture of her in Alaska, the name Ralph Mcduffee, she called her husband, the census 1940 with a nickname used, and nothing more for her. She had been sending home money to help Donie Alta Thomas Watts. Her brother, Oza Jackson Thomas, went to Alaska to look for both her and, or Ralph and reported that the people of the village were friendly until he started asking about them. Of course this is mostly family oral history. We don't have any letters, etc...they haven't survived. We don't have any pictures of Ralph, as a grown man. The family always thought that claim jumpers had killed them both, but then Ralph isn't dead until the 1960's. That opened the door for a lot of questions?? I have searched every web-site I can find and continue to do so all the way from Arkansas. A some of info on the documents we have found is problematical, but signatures are so alike, I don't believe we are looking at different Ralphs. His obit stated, no known survivors. It's as if Dovie doesn't exist after 1939 on the Alaska census. Any more ideas?

Re: Dovie Clementine Thomas McDuffie missing in Alaska

I did a good number of searches using various database systems, without any true results. A number of possible endings to Dovie are possible. Since she stopped communication with her family, this points to more of a death situation. BUT, I've seen communication stop in the past, even though the person was living. Ralph was living in AK in 1934, while Dovie was in Washington State. I also checked references in Washington and Oregon. I could not find a marriage in Washington State, although not all are found in the archives. Oregon are pretty much hit/miss. I used miscellaneous spellings from McDuff to other endings.

The State Archives:
http://archives.alaska.gov/for_researchers/for_researchers.h...
As they indicate much is not available online.

Alaska Vital Records:
http://dhss.alaska.gov/dph/VitalStats/Pages/default.aspx

The below is the research, you appear to already have much/most of this:

When you post, post the link to your family tree. This helps volunteers to know the "bigger" picture and also what information you already have. Volunteers need criteria information for research (Date of Birth, etc).
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/23364095/person/12802286250
Here is another persons tree, which you might have already seen but includes some information (one of the photo's) on the mine.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9332277/person/718518851?ssrc=
I sent a message to the owner with the link to your tree, they "might" have more information than is identified in the tree.

His WWI Draft card shows "Duffee," a DOB of November 14, 1892 in Valley, Nebraska. He registered on June 5, 1917 (Nat'l registration day). The bottom of the card reads: "Order made to Coquille, Oregon on August 10, 1907." Unknown what this means, was it an order to appear for the military under the draft?

The 1920 Census for the Lane County Jail, Eugene, Lane Co, enumerated: 6-7 January.
Ralph H, McDuffy, age 27, born in NE to father born in KS, mother in NE.
I don't believe this would be imprisonment for failure to appear for draft, this "appears" to be more of a short term problem. If it had been related to military, he probably would have been sent to a Federal institution, and probably not held until 1920.

The 1940 Census, enumerated Feb 24.
Ralpha McDuffy, age 44(1895/1896), born in Nebraska, residence 10/1/1934: AK.
Tommie, age 34(1905/1906), residence 10/1/1934: Wash(ington), shows birth in Tennessee (you show Alabama).
--The 1910 Census showing Dovie in Alabama shows her age as 4, born in AL.

Yes, the WWII Draft card is problematical. It shows DOB of 10/12/1891, born in Humasville, Missouri. He was 5'-10", 200 lbs. His gravestone shows the DOB as given on the WWI draft card, spelling of McDuffee. The fact his wife's name is missing as to a contact is NOT unusual. I see employers identified often. It does not mean divorce, death of Dovie. The fact he is working and not at the "mine" is also not uncommon. Mining is sometimes not enough income.

The AK State library has a database of newspapers. It shows the Fairbanks Daily News, dated 7/14/1967, has an article beginning with "Ralph McDuffy d" The abstract was not available. It "probably" is at least a death notice, possibly an obit.

This October 1989 Corporations listing still shows the McDuffee Mines:
http://archives.alaska.gov/pdfs/collection_guides/ak_corp_kl...
BUT, this could be a later day McDuffee:
http://www.mindat.org/loc-198808.html

Hi,

I didn't find her in Ancestry or Familysearch.org but I didn't really expect to find her. Alaska publishes or allows to be published just about nothing.

However, it's been 50 years since a divorce record or death record would have been issued. Therefore, those records are now are considered public and you can request them from Alaskta Vital Records, http://genealogy.about.com/od/vital_records/p/alaska.htm.

Before you contact them, do you have a copy of Ralph's obituary? I don't know if one would have been published since he didn't have children.

I don't have a contact for obituaries there, but do a Google search for the Yukon or Nenana Public Library and ask if they have an obituary file.

If the Informant was knowledgeable, there might be more information on Ralph's death certificate. The Spouse field should be filled in or shown as divorced or widower. Successful Searching!

I'm looking for any info on my Great Aunt who vanished in Alaska around 1940-42. We think the 1940 census shows her living on Iron Creek, Nome AK. Listed as "Tommie" (Nickname for Thomas) wife of Ralph McDuffie. From there she vanishes from all records so far. Ralph Mc Duffie doesn't die until 1967 in Nenana AK, with no known survivors. She was born in 1906 in Alabama, death unknown. She quit writing to her family in Alabama in the early 40's after reporting that they had found gold and were filing a claim.

Traugott Mentzel Menzel did reside Home KS. Traugott died there. I tried to locate a Historical Societyor Heritage there, but have to search in nearby town marysville. I was at the Home Bincentenual and learned many things about Mesel, Messall and the Menzel. I was invited to Mrs Menzel;s house. My tree is on Rootsweb.

I am the great granddaughter of Tony and Helen Karnes (my grandmother is Nancy Karnes/Hutchens, the woman referred to in the other response to this post). I would check the Alaska Historical Society and the Alaska State Library also has some information. My grandmother and mother are both still living, so if you have specific questions you would like answered, I would be happy to ask for you.

Thanks for the information. I am still searching. I see something in your post that may be part of the reason why I am not getting too many responses or much help. You listed that there as a, "Bertha Wassillie, Freshman 1976, Eskimo Olympics 3rd place Head Pull."

I can see some reason for worry if I tell people that my mom's name was Bertha since my mom was born in the 1930s! Everyone probably thinks I am nuts! Well, there can be more than one person with that name! Anyway, this may explain the slow - or no - responses.
