Thanks for responding ... yes, the people in the pictures are roughly the same age. Both appear to be in their late 50s or early 60s, as both have gray hair and have a "mature" look about them. My photo-dating skills are not great, but I would guess, based on their clothes and hair styles that the pictures may have been taken around 1885-1900 - definitely after the Civil War, but before Teddy Roosevelt. They appear to be well-to-do - her dress is black, but has some ornate lace trim and small pleats; his jacket is open and there is a good-sized watch chain visible. Both of them are "pleasingly plump," as my grandmother would have said.
