I don't have an answer to your question-but am interested if you find anything as my Gr-Uncle also on his WWII draft record was listed as working for this company-it doesn't specify his job. He mainly lived in Juneau during this time, so looks like he just came up there for some work, I would guess. He was in construction.

Hi Elizabeth,

The cemetery is listed under the name "Pioneers Home Cemetery". The search engine will not find it if there is no 's' on the end of pioneer. I just tested it, it's there. :)

Julie

Hi Betty,
I just discovered that you had replied to my email back in February! The Ancestry.com message board is not very efficient I guess. :) If you still want pictures please let me know. You had asked original if there are headstones. The graves are marked with 1x2 foot markers with the name and dates of birth and death. There are approximately 1600 graves.
Regards,
Julie

I came across this thread regarding the Sitka Pioneer Home Cemetery. I have been assisting a friend with researching a relative buried in this cemetery and would like some additional information about it, possibly a photograph of his burial location if you would be willing. The name of the deceased is Claude C. Starkey. He died on January 22, 1980 and is buried in plot #1868.
After seeing your post, I am glad to hear that the Sitka Pioneer Home Cemetery is being well maintained. Many of the older burial grounds are not so fortunate.
Many thanks for the post. I look forward to hearing from you.

Wow, when I asked for help, I did not expect to be "chewed out". If I had all the info that you say I should have put in there, I would not need to ask for additional help. The reason to ask for a d/c is to see what info there might be. If I have all of it, I wouldn't ask for help. The obit is not clear enough on a sister's name, or I would have started there. And for a birthdate, all I have is the obit and a conflicting date on a census record.
We can't all afford to send for d/c, thus asking if anyone ever goes to the court house and looks - same thing for probate records - the sites that I have looked at did not give any addresses, and the local county board had no volunteers. So, I came here - I will think twice about asking for assistance again.

Don't bite the hand that feeds you. I give the same type of help to almost anyone that posts with less than needed data for volunteers. I've been doing this a long time and only get the response as yours once in a thousand. Between the two postings, each individually wasn't enough, together they are a bit more. My questions were not to chew out, but to further identify the knowledge you have. Read the individual postings. I NEVER suggest anyone buy a DC and suggest otherwise. You didn't ask for someone to go to the courthouse to look, you asked how to find probates. Just in the future provide the known, as you know it, and you'll get more response.

When you post, it is important to provide criteria information on the person you seek, especially in those states where data is restricted. The person's DOB is always helpful, as is place of birth, etc. Was this person 22, or 82, that makes a difference.

You write the obit said he had a sister, Mrs. "Herry" Pearce of New York. What else did the obit provide? The funeral company name? If so, contact them, they usually write the obit or help to have it published. They might have a copy of the Death Certificate. Does it identify place of burial? Any other survivors? The DC seldom provides much information, date/place of death, cause, sometimes the burial place. The "Informant" depending on who they are, may be wrong about facts. It won't provide much information at all on the family...even if the sister was the Informant. Because a person "died" somewhere, that doesn't mean they "lived" there.

In another posting this subject.
http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ala...
Provides:
Thomas Cunningham, DOB: Feb 23, 1867, "somewhere it indicates 1871." Died Nov 20, 1952, probate 1952. So, he was about 85 years of age.

The AK Archives does show a Probate Case, 1952, Estate, in Sitka.
http://archives.alaska.gov/genealogy/genealogy.html
A probate case is a civil court case. Contact the AK Archives for information on obtaining this case.

Hi Elizabeth, I'm an Ancestry.com member and Find-A-Grave volunteer. I recently came across your message regarding the Sitka Pioneer Home Cemetery. I live in Sitka and thought I'd let you know that the cemetery is now being well maintained. It is a beautiful spot located on a hilltop with a view of the forest and mountains surrounding Sitka. There are no tombstones, the plots are identified with markers. I see that your message was posted quite a while ago, but if you are still interested, I can photograph your ancestor's marker and the cemetery and upload to Ancestry.com for you. Best wishes, Julie

My great uncle, Oliver Commodore Nelson, was an architect with the Siems Drake Company in Sitka during 1941 (as written on his WW2 Draft Registration card). In a letter to my grandmother he said he spent his time 'designing buildings like little boxes.

The only knowledge I have is that the company was a civilian contractor in Alaska for WW2 military contracts. I realise it would be a stroke of amazing fortune to find a reference to my g-uncle in company records - but - my question is, where might I find a history of this company's work in Sitka during WW2?

Lois,
I see this is your posting on Rootsweb/Ancestry message boards, at least under this user name. When you post, it is important to identify some basic criteria information about the people you seek. Their exact date of birth is always helpful, but if not, whatever potential age of the person would help eliminate those OTHER persons having the same name. In this case, th correct Rufus Dill appears to have died in 1946. His son Rufus Jr, died in Anchorage area about 1955. His son Roy, died in California. Whatever information you have about a person, helps a volunteer. If you have a posted family tree, post the link, that helps show the big picture. If you have a lot of information on a person, be specific, otherwise, a volunteer will give you pages of information you already have. OR, pages of information on the WRONG people.

A posted message on Ancestry/Rootsweb:
http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=428&amp...
identified Jennie belanger was born in Sept 1884, she married a Rufus Dill on 29 Feb 1901.
She was the daughter of Louis Belanger Jr, born 25 Sep 1839 in Mackinac Island, Mackinac County, Michigan, and Rosa Martineau, 12 April 1851 in Michigan. Dill, lived at 1295 Manhattan Street, Reno, NV. Also found at this address was an Anna Dill, born 24 Oct 1934.
The same family tree as above, identifies Rufus as having two spouses, Diane and private.

Roy Clinton Dill. A family tree identified Roy, born to Rufus and Jennie born 1919, divorced 1947 from Lucille Winfred Rippy in San Bernardino Co, CA. He died 26 June 1955 in Anchorage, AK. They had four daughters. This tree shows Rufus died on 11 March 1946 in Los Angeles. I sent the owner of the tree a message to read this thread. Rufus was the son of Melvin Dill and June (unknown).

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (Fairbanks) 06/30/1955.
Anchorage
Body Found Besides River Off Highway
One body has been fnd near the scene of where a car left the Glenn highway 75 miles north of Anchorage Sunday afternoon and crashed into the Matanuska river.
Territorial police identified the victim as 42 year-old Jerry Olson of Mt. View, a suburb of Anchorage. Searchers are still looking for the body of Roy C. Dill, 37, another Mt. View man and owner of the car.
The vehicle left the road and plunged down a 30-foot embankment into the swollen waters late Sunday afternoon. The car was discovered a mile downstream by a passing motorist and the search for the victims got underway.
A check with the motor registration deparment showed the car was owned by Dill. His family said Olson was with him when he left home early Sunday.
Territorial police say they aren't sure yet whether there were others in the car when it took its fatal plunge.
... Along side the body (of Olson) was a shoe which police say might have belonged to the missing Dill.

The other poster wrote:
On May 6, 1946 in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Juneau, ". . . Rufus A. Dill, a mechanic with the Alaska Railroad
---That date was 1966...NOT 1946.
BOTH Rufus Sr. and his son Rufus Junior were dead by 1955.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Hi Lois,
The latest Census available to the public is the 1930 Census so finding information about this couple will be difficult. The 1940 Census will be released soon but not indexed probably for another couple of months.

I found a couple of newspaper bits from 1945 to 1947 about Mrs. Rufus Dill helping with teas or refreshments for the Presbyterian Ladies' Aid Society.

On May 6, 1946 in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Juneau, ". . . Rufus A. Dill, a mechanic with the Alaska Railroad at Anchorage, filed a Declarament of candidacy Thursday for Democratic nomination to the House of Representatives from District 8 . . ."

Published on September 9, 1966 p. 14 ". . . Primary Vote for Southcentral; Democrats: Rufus Dill 3006 votes . . ."

A Rufus W. Dill
Ship: Sperry, AS 12
Muster Date: 28 April 1945
Received April 9, 1945 from USN TADCHEN, Shoemaker, CA.
Source: US Navy Records.

Of course there is no guarantee these snippets are about your Rufus and Jennie Belenger Dill. Successful Searching!

Alaska State records did not start until 1912. So one would have to rely on civilian records, the newspaper(s) of the day. Which I think there was one. Or, one would have to use church records or in this case, possibly military records. There is also applying for a birth certificate through late registry as my father had to do in the 1950's. So it is possible that AK Vital Statistics may have a record. Military records may have to be accessed through the US National Archives.

The following is from "Lady Franklin Visits Sitka, Alaska 1870" published by the Alaska Historical Society, 1981:
Apendix II, Census of Sitka October 24, 1970

"In October, 1870, shortly after the visit of Lady Franklin and Sophia Cracroft to Sitka, Major John C. Tidball, Second U.S. Artillery, then in command of the Sitka post, ordered Second Lieutenant D.C. Lyle to take a census of the civilian population of the town, excluding the natives living in the Ranche. In this task Lt. Lyle was assisted by Emanuel Shirpser as Russian interpreter, William Phillipson as Indian interpreter, and Dr. J. Williams of the post medical staff. etc., etc......

The census did not include the more than 100 soldiers then stationed at Sitka. This is unfortunate because some of the men may have stayed on and become residents of the town following their discharge."

There are no O'Connells listed in this census.

Sitka Birth certificates c 1869,1870?

My great great grandparents, John W. and Ellen O'CONNELL (or CONNELL) were stationed in Sitka, at least from 1869, perhaps as early as 1867, through the end of 1870. He was in the US Army. While there, two of their children were born:

Mary C. O'Connell, born April 3, 1869 in Sitka
and
Thomas J. O'Connell, born August 15, 1870 in Sitka

I'm hoping that the children's birth certificates might contain more information about the parents, specifically Ellen's maiden name and the birth location of either John or Ellen. Any other information would be great, too.

Would I be able to get copies of the children's birth certificates through the Alaska Bureau of Vital Statistics? There web site wasn't clear about that. If not, is there another agency or department through which I might be able to get copies? For example, because he was in the military, are there military hospital records from that time in Sitka's history?

Would there be any other documentation on them in Sitka? I know that the US Census didn't begin in AK until 1880 but were there any local censuses taken? Anything that might help me?

Thank you,
Carol Hokana

P.S. Family lore has it that the above Mary C. O'Connell was the first non-native (caucasian) baby born in Sitka, AK.

Oops sorry. my grgrgrandfather was William Sheehan,1844-193? married to my gr gr grandmother Soffia Bereskin 1875-1900 who was supposedly married to a Petre Dushkin before marrying my gr grgrandfather. I haven't verified that, it is from someone who submitted it on the LDS site. I do know it's definitely Sheehan & Bereskin that are family, & someone just recently contacted me & said the Berskin were Russian Jews from a small area of Russia close by Alaska & they came there to escape persecution... my mom would always say that but I thought it was nonsense...

I'm pretty sure they were in Unalaska, as my gr grandmother was in the Jesse Lee Home, her mother is buried in front of that little cemetery with the white picket fence & the purple flowers that grow all in the fields around it (atleast that's what she told me), & my gr gr grandfather owned the first mercantile as well as made billiards that were sent all over the place, he's in alot of the "Polk's Directories" in a lot of cities. On my gr grandmother's school records it says she & her mother were born in Morzhovoi... Was St Paul considered part of it? I thought St Paul was an Island further out, but it may explain where he might be buried. It's the only state I haven't been to but I sure wish I could find out how to get the records for the Old Pioneers Home to see if there's anymore info in there, all I get is the run around when I've tried to call up there.

Hi Betty
I am RAOGK vol. for Alaska I had a request a couple years ago for Sitka Pioneer cemetery. Pioneer home used to beong to military & when they left the town decided to use it for sick & ailing vets & Ak elders. There is a very small cenetery not on any website. I contacted RAOGK & keyed in Alaska & Sitka. There was a gal who was signed up to research but was sick & trying to move. She did tell me there was a cemetery very run down & maybe a marker or two left. she said when she got time she'd look. My client decided since he now knew his relative was buried there, if she ever answered me ok if not ok. He is now one on my e-mail buddies. Yoy can see if she or anyone else is doing Sitka & what they will do

I have checked Find A Grave and do not see a listing for this cemetery.

Can anyone tell me if they have tombstones or markers there? I did write to the Home asking them, but all they sent was the plot # for my relative and did not answer my question abt. tombstones. Before placing a request to Find A Grave I wanted to be sure first.

Thank you very much. Betty Macdonald
