Hello

I know nothing about possible nicknames for Olaf. His tombstone names him Olaf Kasson. He was a member of the "The Fraternal Order of Eagles", in accordance with a newspaper-ad" in the Nome Daily Nugget. Also the "Loyal Order of Moose", and the "Sons of The North" urged all members of the Order to attend his funeral, in "newspaper-ads".

Olaf Kaasen was buried Oct. 27 1915

my grandfather was a gold miner in the interior Alaska 1911 until his death 1988. He told stories of his mining days and of the people he knew. do you know if Gunner's brother Olof had the nickname "moose" the story is about Moose Kitten, it might be moose kaasan. Grandpa was from sweden and had a heavy accent so it could be kaasen not kitten.
Katherine Laub Perkins 1857-1950 Early Day Nome Doctor

The Seattle Times
Monday, March 20, 1950
Mrs. Katherine L. Perkins, Early-Day Nome Doctor, Dies
Mrs. Katherine L. Perkins, 92 years old, a University of Michigan medical graduate who delivered one of the first white babies born in Nome at the turn of the century, died in a rest home here after a long illness.

Mrs. Perkins was the widow of Colonel William T. Perkins, former University of Washington regent and Alaska and Northwest business leader. He died in 1947, a week after he and his wife celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

Born in Denison, Iowa, Mrs. Perkins and her husband were married after they were both graduated from the University of Michigan in 1884. He was a law graduate.

The Perkins' practiced their respective professions in Bismarck, North Dakota before Colonel Perkins, a Colonel in the North Dakota National Guard, went to the Klondike in the gold rush of 1898.

Mrs. Perkins waited in Seattle while the Colonel prospected unsuccessfully for gold. In 1900, they went together to pioneer in Nome.

The Perkins' operated a general store in that Alaskan village and Mrs. Perkins put her medical training to use whenever it was needed.

They returned to Seattle in 1908 to make their home. They later traveled to Siberia and South America to develop trade, mining and timber ventures. Colonel Perkins also organized banks at Roy, Pierce County; Oakville, Grays Harbor County; West Seattle and Kirkland.

Mrs. Perkins, who had abandoned her medical career when she came to Seattle, was a member and past president of Chapter A., P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was a member of the Woman’s Century Club.

Funeral services will be held at 4 o’clock tomorrow in the Butterworth Chapel. A nephew, C.F. Kuehnle, Winnetka, Illinois, arrived in Seattle less than an hour after Mrs. Perkins’ death.

William Thomas Perkins 1858-1947 Nome Resident

NOME AND SEWARD PENINSULA BIOGRAPHIES AND STORIES
pages 255-256
COLONEL WILLIAM T. PERKINS
Colonel William T. Perkins has been identified with the Northland since 1898. He is not only a prominent citizen of Nome, but he is a prominent citizen of Alaska. He is associated with the leading commercial and transportation company of Northwestern Alaska, occupying the position of auditor of the Northwestern Commercial Company. This company has exploited many avenues of the natural resources of Alaska and Siberia.

Colonel Perkins is a native of Buffalo, New York and was born November 2, 1858. He is the son of Nathaniel Perkins and Annette Hawkins. He is a descendant of Revolutionary sires, and is a member of the Washington, D.C., Society of American Sons of Revolution. His early education was obtained in the public schools of Buffalo and Lockport, New York. He prepared for college at New Hampton Institution, New Hampshire, in 1877 and was graduated by Bates College of Maine in 1881 with the degree of A.B. In 1884 he was graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan with the degree of LL.B. He has been admitted to the bar of Michigan, North Dakota and Alaska. He began the practice of law in North Dakota in 1884 and continued the practice of this profession until 1896. From 1892 until 1896 he was Vice-President of the First National Bank of Bismarck, North Dakota. For a period of two years after 1896 he engaged in mining in Colorado. He came to Alaska in 1898 and followed mining for two years. In 1900 he arrived in Nome and became the General Auditor of the Northwestern Commercial Company, a position that he still fills. He is also attorney in fact in Alaska for the managing director of the Northwestern Siberian Company, Limited.

Colonel Perkins has received a number of political honors from his friends and party. In 1888 he was elected as one of the first aldermen of Bismarck, North Dakota and was a member of the Board of Education and its secretary at Bismarck for a period of twelve years. In 1889 he was elected to the office of County Superintendent of Public Schools of Burleigh County, North Dakota and held this position during his residence in this state. He took an active interest in both local and state politics in Dakota. He was selected as a delegate to the Republican national Convention in Chicago in June 1904 and was one of the first delegate s to represent Alaska in a Republican National Convention.

Colonel Perkins took an active and a leading part in education work during his residence in Dakota. He was President of the North Dakota Educational Association in 1895. He was commissioned Colonel in the National Guards of North Dakota in 1892. In May 1903, while in Seattle, he was elected as Chairman of the Executive Committee selected to make the Alaska arrangements for the reception of President Roosevelt. At the time of the visit of the United States Senators who were appointed by Congress to inquire into needed laws for the purpose of determining the best legislation that could be enacted for the district, Colonel Perkins was selected by the citizens of Nome as the Chairman of the Executive Committee to entertain the Senatorial Committee.

Colonel Perkins is a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He is a thirty-second degree Mason and Deputy for Alaska of the Inspector General for Washington, Idaho and Alaska, of the Scottish Rite and Noble of the Mystic Shrine. He is a Past Grand Commander of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of North Dakota, and Past Grand Commander of the Knights Templar, North Dakota. He is also a member of the Artic Brotherhood, Camp Nome No. 9, a fraternal organization that has its home in the Northland and at the last Grand session of the order held in Seattle in November 1904, he was elected Grand Artic Chief.

It will be seen from this brief and hasty narrative that Colonel Perkins has had a very active and busy life; that he has stood and stands high in the estimation of his fellow men with whom he has come in contact; that he has been called upon to fill many positions of civic and fraternal honor. While he has taken an active part in politics he does not belong to the genus politician. He is a man of unquestioned and unimpeachable integrity and his interest in politics is simply the interest of a good citizen desiring better and cleaner government. His native intelligence has been polished by education. He knows his capacity and limitations, so that he does well whatever he undertakes to do. No citizen of the Nome country commands more of the public esteem and public confidence than does Colonel Perkins.

He was married December 16, 1994, at Denison, Iowa. Mrs. Perkins was formerly Katherine Laub.

According to my aunt, Michelle Carsen, my father's sister, I am related to Gunnar Kaasen and the Kaasen family line?

I'm not sure precisely how but I am becoming very interested as I'm pregnant and am thinking of naming my baby 'Gunnar' and would like to know exactly how we are related. Any help would be great!
Hello Barbara, Daniel and Annie Kelly were my great grandparents both deceased before my mother was born. I am one of 6 grandchildren of Mildred Kelly (Duffy) Cornelius (Neil) was my uncle.(now deceased) Gladys Kelly was my aunt also deceased. Mildred, my grandmother died at 101 years old. Following the death of their parents, Mildred, Cornelius and Gladys were considered orphans and penniless. (Odd as their father and uncle owned a productive gold mine, however that was ne ver dicussed) They were sent to the mainland from Nome. Cornelius was placed at St Martins Seminary (Olympia, Washington)for school and housing. Mildred and Gladys were placed at Holy Names Academy for school and housing(Seattle, Washington). All completed high schoold, became employed and lived useful and productive lives. The three remained very close with strong family values.

Re: Gunnar Kaasen

I had researched Gunnar serveral years ago, concerning the Serum run by dogsled to Nome to combat the diptheria outbreak.

Since he moved to Everett in 1952, "IF" he did work as a civilian employee of the US Government, records could be obtained via:
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/archival-programs/civilian-...

The World War II Draft Registration (the Old Man's Draft) of 1942, identified Gunnar was employed by the "U.S.S.R. & M. Co." This was the Smelting, Mining, and Refining Company, known as the U.S.S.R. & M Company. They were involved in many mining, dredging projects in Alaska for the US Military:
http://permafrosttunnel.crrel.usace.army.mil/geology/soil_an...
So, it appears to be more possible he might have served with a contractor on US government projects, meaning he and his company (or the company where he was employed) obtained contracts to perform work. The War years especially had massive work being completed, the building of military bases, etc. If this be the case, the US National Archives and Records Administration "might" have contract information, but it would be more of the acceptance process, administration of the contracts than actual who did what in them. Basically IF you knew exactly who he worked for, and was able to find a Government contract with that company, his name might not be found anywhere in the record.

For those that don't know just who this person was, just run the name of Gunnar Kaasen in your search engine and you'll find a mass of articles about him and this run, the "creator" of the Iditarod. Balto is also subject of many books and written articles in magazines. The stories are in several languages.

Gunnar is well documented in this Boys' Life article of Feb 1987, pages 21 to 26 . There is a picture of Gunnar and Balto on page 26.
http://books.google.com/books?id=q2YEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA26&am...

Balto and the Great Race:
http://books.google.com/books?id=GiQbPjkGT5kC&pg=PT19&am...

Gunnar's burial stone and story:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ka...;
Anna's can also be found by clicking on her name.

Proud to be a Norwegian American
Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Thank you so much for the information. I have traced Frank Martin back to his ancestors in Quebec, Canada. We also traced Eva Teresa Martin from Alaska, to the orphanage in Seattle, to the Puyallup Indian School, in Washington and to the Chemawa Indian School in Oregon. Eva is my mother's mom (my grandmother). I do have Frank Martin and Eva's death certificates. Frank Martin was a miner and later worked for Hudson Bay Company purchasing furs for them. Our family feels incomplete without the information on Ida Austin. We do know that she was living within the Eskimo community in the Nome/Diomede area maybe elsewhere. It is now my dream to find her relatives. I understand that the documentation might have been lost when there was a fire way back when in Nome. You are all so kind to help me. Know that I appreciate this more than I can say. Thank you.

Hi Judy:
Thank you very much for taking the time to help me out. I did request birth and death certificates on my great grandmother Ida Austin and the State of Alaska has no record.
I also requested a copy of the birth certificate for my grandmother Eva Teresa Martin and there is no record so I hit a dead end with this.

I was wondering if you know how I could get information on the marriage between Ida Austin and Frank Martin. Frank went to Alaska in 1900 or 1901 and Ida died in 1906. Ida gave birth to Eva we believe in 1904. We know that Ida and Frank were married. I believe that Frank was Catholic. Do you know a resource for checking church files?

Thank you for your "massive" reply!
I didn't know about the "People in history"-book.
I have a special interest in what Gunnar was doing for a living in the "second half" of his working life. His death certificate says he worked with civil eengineering. This was new to me. I'm also, of course, interested in details about his pre-marriage years. As I stated, Gunnar was my fathers uncle. I live in Norway and have rather good knowledge of the ancestors and descendants. I know of the Carsen-tree. Hjalmar Ferdinand Carsen was born out of wedlock to Gunnar's brother John Emil Kaasen, also a Nome pioneer.
My grandfather had six brothers and three cousins who went to Nome for several periods, the first cousin, Ole Rapp, starting with the MANITOBAN expedition i 1898, together with Jafet Lindeberg. They all grew up in the same area. One died in Nome, one never returned (Gunnar) and the rest returned to Norway, making different ways of living.

Hi,
I didn't find anything regarding Ida's parents. Knowing that she was born in Nome and probably married there, gives you a location on where to search for copies of the records. But then I ran into a clause that they won't search for genealogical purposes. Go to www.birthdatabase.net/alaska/birth-records.htm . I suppose they will search for medical reasons.

There is an unofficial database for marriages at usgennet.org/usa/ak/state/marrsndx.html but I didn't see Frank or Ida.

Ida's death certificate will have her parents' names if Frank knew them. The info about how to order a death certificate is at www.hss.state.ak.us/dph/bvs/death/default.htm .

The Fairbanks Genealogical Society, http://fairbanksgenealogicalsociety.com/ also have some of this information.
To Tom Kaasen, Norway:

Gunnar was, I believe, my mother's uncle. Her mother was Anna Kassen who lived in Spring Valley Wisconsin and married Gustav Dahl.Anna's parents were Ole and Marit Kassen (Kaasen, Kasson).Siblings were Hilda (Hylda) ,Al,and Herb, that I knew. I had a geneology that was written down by Hylda but have misplaced it.Ole and Marit emmigrated to the US around 1882 from somewhere around Tromso?or Trondheim but I am not sure which.I have an autographed picture of Gunnar standing next to Balto that is addressed to my mother. I've been trying to find more information about relatives in Norway and here you are!.If you have information about Gunnar's siblings etc. I would love to recieve it. If you can send me your contact information I would sincerely appreciate it. Thank you , Erick Dahl Sawtelle

I am looking for any information on my great grandmother Ida Austin who passed away in Oct 1904 and buried in Sand Spit. I'm not sure, but she was around 18 years old at her time of death. She was from the Nome area...perhaps around Little Diomede. She was 1/2 Eskimo, married to Frank Martin and had an infant child, Eva Teresa Martin. Any information about her or her relatives would be appreciated.

My granduncle Gunnar Kaasen, b. march 10-1882, lived in Nome from 1904 until he moved to Everett, Washington, appr. 1952. Gunnar started out in the mining business, and I think he was employed by Pioneer Mining, at least in the beginning, like his brothers. Gunnar married Anna Sofia Danielson from Sweden, in the early twenties I guess. The couple did not have children. Gunnar is also known as the musher of "Balto" in the 1925 serum transport to Nome. He and Anna visited Norway only once, in 1955.
His death certificate states that he worked with civil engineering and under "Kind of business or industry" it says U.S.Gov." I guess this can be interpreted as he was employed by U.S.Gov or he worked with U.S.Gov-projects.
I would be very pleased if anybody "out there" had knowlegde about government business in Cape Nome in the actual period of time.

Tom Kaasen
Norway

Thank you for adding to the Porter family history which has been something of a mystery beyond my grandpa Arthur Porter and his sister Ethel. My mother's name is Harriett and she is 91. Her mother (Genevieve)and father (Arthur Porter) are buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, Bluffton, Indiana next to a James Porter. There is a Harriet Porter in the death index who died in 1921, three years after mom was born. Mom's nickname has always been "Hattie"so it made me wonder if there was some confusion there but it checks out with the Wells County Library.

Now we have a problem. The name Julia doesn't fit with what I have which could be wrong. Try this out; Mary Smith married George Porter and their children were, Arthur William, Charles, James, Frank, Mary and Ethel. Arthur William is my mother's dad. He passed away before I knew him and is buried in Bluffton, Indiana. Ethel is the only one of his siblings I ever heard talked about because she was such a pioneer woman. I have attached photos of both Jim and Ethel.

My Stepfather Glynn Staker was in his 70s, when he asked me to see if we could find anything about his aunt Ethel, what I posted was what he was able to tell me..
His Mother(my Grandma) Was Julia Porter..
I am now trying to rebuild my data base as I had a major Computer failure last fall, He has now passed on, but he would have been delighted with this info, as will all my brothers

Ethel Porter Goldsnake was my mother's(Harriett Porter Dailey) aunt. She has many storys about Ethel and pictures of her and her son Jim Sherry who was a prospector living in Oroville. Jim and my dad panned gold together. Ethel also painted a picture of a cabin she built. Ethel was my grandfather Arthur William Porter's sister.

My grandfather, Percy Herbert Blatchford, from Cornwall, England, died in May, 1961, in Seward, Alaska. He married Mae Herman of Shishmaref, Alaska, and together had 13 children. He had been previously married to a woman from Little Diomede, Alaska, who died from an influenza epidemic along with 3 of their 4 sons. I hope this is helpful. I believe he was there from 1897-1920 before returning to CA. May have married and had children while he was there.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mary
