My granduncle Gunnar Kaasen, b. march 10-1882, lived in Nome from 1904 until he moved to Everett, Washington, appr. 1952. Gunnar started out in the mining business, and I think he was employed by Pioneer Mining, at least in the beginning, like his brothers. Gunnar married Anna Sofia Danielson from Sweden, in the early twenties I guess. The couple did not have children. Gunnar is also known as the musher of "Balto" in the 1925 serum transport to Nome. He and Anna visited Norway only once, in 1955.
His death certificate states that he worked with civil engineering and under "Kind of business or industry" it says U.S.Gov." I guess this can be interpreted as he was employed by U.S.Gov or he worked with U.S.Gov-projects.
I would be very pleased if anybody "out there" had knowlegde about government business in Cape Nome in the actual period of time.
