This is an update to my Oct. 6, 2012, posting to the CARLOUGH Message Board titled “James CARLOUGH, b. ca. 1892, of New Jersey and Alaska,” and my Sept. 23, 2012, posting titled, “Sorting out the various Cornelius CARLICKs, CARLOCKs, and CARLOUGHs,” as well as other related postings, located at the following sites:

I have located a transcript of the death certificate for James Howard CARLOUGH which provided the names of his parents, the maiden name of his wife, his date of birth, the date of his death, and his age at the time of death. James was the son of James H. CARLOUGH (1869 – 1928) and Mary FEENEY (1872 – 1901). The elder James resided in Washington Township, Bergen Co., NJ, 1880; Paterson, Passaic Co., NJ, 1900; and Saddle River Township, Bergen Co., NJ, 1910. He is buried in Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Fair Lawn, Bergen Co., NJ. Although Mary is referenced on James’s tombstone, records show that she is buried in Airmont Lutheran Cemetery, Suffern, Rockland Co., NY.

I had previously erroneously connected information for a different James CARLOUGH to James and Mary’s son James Howard CARLOUGH. I have corrected this error and updated the GERLACH report on my home page to reflect these changes.

I was also able to determine that the Cornelius CARLICK, b. ca. 1846, whom I had listed as son of Peter B. Westervelt CARLICK/CARLOCK/CARLOUGH and Maria/Mariah WINTER/WINTERS was the same person as Cornelius W. CARLOUGH, father of James H. CARLOUGH, and grandfather of James Howard CARLOUGH.

James Howard CARLOUGH’s death certificate identifies the maiden name of his wife Jessie as MOONEY. I have also located some additional information for James and Jessie’s children. However, I have not yet been able to locate James Howard CARLOUGH and his family on the 1920 census. Please let me know if anyone is able to locate this family on the 1920 census.

There are many Carlough's from this area.
Jose was part of the reburial in the Seldovia cemetery after the 1964 earthquake that demolished the original Russian Orthodox graveyard.(records are sketchy)
Robert N Sr. is listed on the Homer Seafarers' Memorial and the Seldovia Cemetery as being killed in a Hatchery Skiff 15 Nov 1941-14Jul 1993
Bill Carlough is listed in the 1983 Seldovia cemetery listing as buried in Plot# 187 in 1956 according to city records.
Joseph S Jr "Little Joe" Obit 29 Sep 2000 also on the Seafarers' Memorial as a sponsored brick-inscripton: "From your Kasilof Friends"
Minnie carlough lived in Kodiak - died 5 Oct 1977 she was born Afognak Island and is listed in End Of The Trail - Alaska Magazine January 1978 (I will try to find this at our library)

James and his family were living in Seldovia, AK, in 1930. The 1930 census states that both of his parents were born in New Jersey. James died prior to Feb. 9, 1940, probably AK. His widow and children were living in what appears to be Porttaik Village (Port Graham ?), near Seldovia, at the time of the 1940 census.

Jessie remarried to a man named BARNHART. She died in June of 1979 and is buried in the Seldovia City Cemetery, Seldovia, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska.

Hello my name is Cheryl Smith i live in portland oregon. my grandmother is Jenny Panchine. She had changed her name to Jean orth. she married my grandfather Darrell Orth. She passed away from heart disease about 15 years ago. she was buried in oregon at willamette memorial. i hope that helps some. also she had 4 kids 2 sons and 2 daughters. if you need any more info i hope i can help. i am also interested in learning more about my hertiage!!

Did you find out any more information regarding this?.... I do not speak to my mother anymore, and I am curious as to where my mothers side of the family comes from. My grandmonthers maiden name was Margaret Panchin(e) and died about the age of 63/64 I was a bit young to remember the exact dates etc. I am a memeber of the Village of Tyonek but I have only been there once for her funeral. But I know very little of my mothers side of the family and I am just at the begining of my search. The information in your paragraph does have about the age my grandmother would have been at that time so I thought I'd give it a shot if I responded!

Longtime Soldotna resident Dudley Lee Abbott died Monday, March 2, 2009, after a lengthy illness. He was 66.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Heritage Place, 232 Rockwell Ave., in Soldotna.

Mr. Abbott was born August 22, 1942, to Dudley and Mildred Abbott in Arizona. He came to Alaska in 1955 with his family. They lived in Whittier where his father was employed by Morrison Knudsen Company as a lumber grader. After moving to Anchorage his family purchased fishing sites at Otter Creek. He graduated from Anchorage High School in 1960 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving in the Vietnam War.

"He served his country first on a submarine and then an aircraft carrier where he discovered his love of flying," his family said.

After leaving the Navy he attended aircraft maintenance school in Los Angeles where he graduated top of his class. He moved to the Kenai Peninsula in the 1960s and started his private airplane build and repair business which he operated until his death.

"The experimental Piper Super Cub replica he built and finished in the late 1980s is still flying Alaska's skies. An article published by the Peninsula Clarion and Home Built Aircraft magazine in 2001 describes one of the aircrafts that he built from scratch," his family said. "He was quoted, 'Before I sign off on a certified plane, I always tell them, You're going to take me for a ride and make sure it flies.'"

He won national fiddle contests, built string musical instruments at his shop in Soldotna. His life centered around his love for music. His soul was a musical kaleidoscope. He played the guitar, fiddle, Banjo, mandolin and the Balalaika.

"Dudley was an extraordinarily accomplished and well known musician, square dance caller, pilot and commercial fisherman. But above all he is loved for his dedication and love for his family and community. He spent almost every Saturday night playing his music for the residents. We will miss him deeply as will all of his friends and family," his family said.

Mr. Abbott is preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart of 49 years, Pamela, of Anchorage; stepson, Brandon Erickson of Anchorage; mother, Lou Abbott of Soldotna; sisters, Sheila Patterson and Sherrie Abbott of Anchorage; brother, Dale Abbott of Soldotna; nieces, Lorena Stratton of Palmer, Ginger Slaughter of Anchorage, Tina Abbott of California and Marquela Grote of Soldotna; nephews, Mike Abbott of Sterling and Jimmie Nielsen of Washington.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made in memory of Dudley to the Heritage Place in Soldotna. 232 Rockwell Ave. Soldotna, AK 99669.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.

ILA JEAN KNOX

Ila Jean KNOX, 85, of Soldotna, Alaska, died Feb. 9, 2009 at Heritage Place in Soldotna.

She was born March 7, 1923, to William C. and Etta Mae Renfro Enlow in Neosho, Mo. In 1942, she opened her first restaurant at the age of 19. She owned and operated various restaurants until the late 1960s.

She met her future husband, O.S. “Sid” KNOX, when he came into her restaurant and drank a half cream, half coffee. The two married in a double wedding ceremony on Aug. 11, 1944. The couple then worked organizing teenage recreation events during the 1940s in Kansas City. During the 1950s and early 1960s, the two organized the events in Newport and Waldport.

She then worked as Postmaster in Seal Rock until her retirement. In 1991, she moved to Sitka, Alaska and moved to Soldotna in September 1998.

She was a member of the WOTM for more than 50 years and served on the college of regents. She also served as president of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Civilian Air Corp. Additionally, she volunteered for several years in Sitka with the Sitka Pioneer Home, Sitka Community Hospital long term care unit, community hospital auxiliary and in Sitka schools.

She will be remembered for her smile and kind words as well as her patriotism and support of veteran organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Sid Knox; parents, William and Etta Enlow; brothers, the Rev. James Enlow and Glen Enlow; sisters, Ester, Peggy and Goldie and great-grandchildren, Andrew and Natasha.

She is survived by her son, Michael KNOX of Hawaii; daughter, Sunny Van Zyl of Kasilof, Alaska; sister, Sylvia Tracy of Belle Vista, Ark.; grandson, Terry McAlpine of Oregon; granddaughters, Jayne Pinkston of Arizona, Angie Dozier of Oregon, Marlys Speidel and Mailade of Washington; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Feb. 17 at the Soldotna Baptist Church in Soldotna. Additional services will be Aug. 11 at Chelan Abbey in Newport. Memorial donations may be made by thanking a veteran or active member of the armed forces.

Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Soldotna is handling arrangements.

Crown Point Machine Works, Moose Pass, AK, between about 1949-1965. Proprietor Robert W. Kaseberg built a vehicle he called Alaska Bush King, an articulated all-terrain vehicle built, as he described it, "from 2 Chevy rear ends, shortened 6" on each side with 6 grease fittings on the articulating system, chain-driven, 1/2 to 15 miles per hour."

Shown as a widow.
Was in Tacoma Indian hospital for 6 months, 7 days.

I have to apoligize. If I had just looked up in the index of our book I would have found Florence and Hjalmar listed together??? I guess I was tunnel vision on John. Anyway here is the listing in Hickerson Memorial Cemetery:
Block 10 Lot 60
William Lindstrom
Florence Lindstrom
(Surname written down the upright of a wooden cross. Given names on the cross piece. City recors show Hjalmar W. A. Lindstrom buried here on Oct 30, 1964.)
In 1983 book he is listed in the Death record section as Lindstrom, Jhalmar, William 9-24-64
I will look in the Peninsula papers this week for an obit.
I can tell you that that Hickerson cemetery has the most beautiful view of any cemetery I have ever been to. It sits on top of a ridge and has a 360 degree view of Kachemak Bay, the Home Spit and Cook Inlet.

I have discovered the name of Florence Lindstroms' husband. His name was Hjalmar H. W. (William) Lindstrom. I believe he is buried in Homer, Ak. I haven't been able to locate an obituary on him. If you get a chance could you do a search? I have found him listed under Hjalmar and William. Thank you for all of your help to this point.

Thank you for trying, like I said previously we aren't sure if he was married to Florence Lindstrom or not. We were trying to find out one way or another through the obituary.

I looked at the old newspaper microfische today for May 13- June 3 1968 and didn't find any mention of John Lindstrom's death. But will keep looking.

I found an obit of sorts for Florence and also for her brother and some public phone numbers for Florence's daughter and her son's(or nephew's) wife (possibly)
Our Cemetery book lists as 'persumed buried' in Seward Cemetery:
John W Lindstrom Apr 4, 1899 -- May 14, 1966
Born in Finland

As soon as I get to the library, I will look up John's obit. Here is what I found so far.

Anchorage homemaker Florence Marlene Lindstrom, 87, died June 13 at Alaska Native Medical Center.

No service is planned.

Mrs. Lindstrom was born Feb. 2, 1905, in Unalakleet.

She is survived by two sons, Albert of Anchorage and Bill of Dallas; her daughter, Irma Graham of Anchorage; her brother, Cyrus Ivanoff of Anchorage; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Mary Conrad Center, 9100 Centennial Drive, Anchorage, 99504.

Arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

CYRUS H. IVANOFF

Lifelong Alaskan Cyrus Harvey Ivanoff, 79, died April 19, 1998, at Alaska Native Medical Center.

No funeral services are planned at this time.

Mr. Ivanoff was born July 4, 1918, in Shaktoolik, and served in the Alaska Guard during World War II. He had lived in Unalakleet, Nome and Anchorage.

In Anchorage, he worked at Sears and received an award for Employee Excellence. He retired in 1981.

His son said, ''Dad was the most caring and giving person on Earth. He was easy to love. He was also the best father a child could ask for. He had a special love for his children, and never asked for anything in return.''

Mr. Ivanoff is survived by his wife, Marion, of Anchorage, sons, John of Anchorage and James of Hart, Mich.; grandchildren, Leah, Stephanie, Keone, Adam and Douglas; and great -grandchild, Querida. He also leaves numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, including Irma Graham, and Woody and Fekla Ivanoff and their children, Viola, Roland, Mayleen and Woodrow.

I am doing research on the Lindstrom Family. My husbands grandmother is Florence (Ivanoff) Lindstrom, who died in Anchorage in 1992. I don't know his grandfathers name we are looking at John Lindstrom b. 4/4/1899-d. 5/14/1968 as a possibility due to dates listed in SSDI, but haven't been able to locate an obituary to verify whether he is the right guy or not. He died in Seward, Alaska. I haven't been able to get access to the old papers from that area, if you could help in any way I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I am trying to get in touch with Linda seiger for shawn seigler, if you can help that would be great. My mom is Alice Mishakoff, daughter of Doris and Musick mishakoff.I also have some pictures of Marion when she was younger. mom did not have good memories growing up, so she kind of stays away from that part of her past. I am still doing the tree.

Am seeking to find out if my cousin Clinton V Lake died in Kenai. This is the last location that I have on him is Kenai, Third Judicial District, Alaska Territory, according to the 1930 Census.

Clinton was born ca 1845 in Connecticut, according to the 1930 census.

I was doing a search of my post and found that you replied about my old friend Jim whom you said in your reply that he lives next door to you.

I don't get to the computer much these days, but will try to check more often. In the meantime, could you give me some more info on Jim...like is he in good health, what would he need if you know, is he working somewhere..you know, basic things that possibly I could help him with if he needs it. mr gresbach lives on chickadee street in nikiski next door to me. we call him the dog man, as he lives in horrible conditions with a big pack of dogs, geese, and chickens. if you are a freind of his, maybe you could get him some help, as he really needs it. i know he lived in the places you mentioned. paul felton
