Dudley Lee Abbott obituary Alaska

Dudley Lee Abbott
By Obituary | Peninsula Clarion
Longtime Soldotna resident Dudley Lee Abbott died Monday, March 2, 2009, after a lengthy illness. He was 66.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Heritage Place, 232 Rockwell Ave., in Soldotna.

Mr. Abbott was born August 22, 1942, to Dudley and Mildred Abbott in Arizona. He came to Alaska in 1955 with his family. They lived in Whittier where his father was employed by Morrison Knudsen Company as a lumber grader. After moving to Anchorage his family purchased fishing sites at Otter Creek. He graduated from Anchorage High School in 1960 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving in the Vietnam War.

"He served his country first on a submarine and then an aircraft carrier where he discovered his love of flying," his family said.

After leaving the Navy he attended aircraft maintenance school in Los Angeles where he graduated top of his class. He moved to the Kenai Peninsula in the 1960s and started his private airplane build and repair business which he operated until his death.

"The experimental Piper Super Cub replica he built and finished in the late 1980s is still flying Alaska's skies. An article published by the Peninsula Clarion and Home Built Aircraft magazine in 2001 describes one of the aircrafts that he built from scratch," his family said. "He was quoted, 'Before I sign off on a certified plane, I always tell them, You're going to take me for a ride and make sure it flies.'"

He won national fiddle contests, built string musical instruments at his shop in Soldotna. His life centered around his love for music. His soul was a musical kaleidoscope. He played the guitar, fiddle, Banjo, mandolin and the Balalaika.

"Dudley was an extraordinarily accomplished and well known musician, square dance caller, pilot and commercial fisherman. But above all he is loved for his dedication and love for his family and community. He spent almost every Saturday night playing his music for the residents. We will miss him deeply as will all of his friends and family," his family said.

Mr. Abbott is preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart of 49 years, Pamela, of Anchorage; stepson, Brandon Erickson of Anchorage; mother, Lou Abbott of Soldotna; sisters, Sheila Patterson and Sherrie Abbott of Anchorage; brother, Dale Abbott of Soldotna; nieces, Lorena Stratton of Palmer, Ginger Slaughter of Anchorage, Tina Abbott of California and Marquela Grote of Soldotna; nephews, Mike Abbott of Sterling and Jimmie Nielsen of Washington.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made in memory of Dudley to the Heritage Place in Soldotna. 232 Rockwell Ave. Soldotna, AK 99669.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.

I have to apoligize. If I had just looked up in the index of our book I would have found Florence and Hjalmar listed together??? I guess I was tunnel vision on John. Anyway here is the listing in Hickerson Memorial Cemetery:
Block 10 Lot 60
William Lindstrom
Florence Lindstrom
(Surname written down the upright of a wooden cross. Given names on the cross piece. City recors show Hjalmar W. A. Lindstrom buried here on Oct 30, 1964.)
In 1983 book he is listed in the Death record section as Lindstrom, Jhalmar, William 9-24-64
I will look in the Peninsula papers this week for an obit.
I can tell you that that Hickerson cemetery has the most beautiful view of any cemetery I have ever been to. It sits on top of a ridge and has a 360 degree view of Kachemak Bay, the Home Spit and Cook Inlet.
Sorry about the mix up
Loretta

I haven't been able to locate an obituary on him. If you get a chance could you do a search? I have found him listed under Hjalmar and William. Thank you for all of your help to this point.

I am doing research on the Lindstrom Family. My husbands grandmother is Florence (Ivanoff) Lindstrom, who died in Anchorage in 1992. I don't know his grandfathers name we are looking at John Lindstrom b. 4/4/1899-d. 5/14/1968 as a possibility due to dates listed in SSDI, but haven't been able to locate an obituary to verify whether he is the right guy or not. He died in Seward, Alaska. I haven't been able to get access to the old papers from that area, if you could help in any way I would appreciate it. Thank you.

You don't know who I am but I was a friend of your brother Dave for many years in Anchor Point Alaska, we owned some land together there for approx. 7 years. I came to Washington State 9/11/2002 for medical reasons. Dave had left to Anch. Alaska about the year 2000. Last I heard he had moved to Hawaii, maybe a year ago. He had been excepted for Social Security Disability, but had never picked up his first check. As far as I and other friends of Dave's know he has disappeared.

You as a relative, may be able to contact Social Security in Alaska and find out more information. He and I had tried to contact his family. If you recieve this email please email me back. Dave and I were very close and I miss him very much, it would be nice to be able to find out where he might be. If I can help I will.

Thanks,

Nicol

Have you extracted the Tyonek
cemetery records? I have a south central Alaska web page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coleen/south_centra...

The Tyonek cemetery is something I am very interested in. I am in the
process of publishing the Herning Diaries (are you familiar with them?).
Mr. Herning came to Alaska in 1898 and died in Wasilla in 1947. He kept a
daily diary. While a lot of it is just store business, he also mentions a
few Tyonek names (he first landed at Tyonek and then settled in Knik).
Since he was not a very good speller, I have always been curious about (not
only) the correct spelling of the Tyonek names, but the family trees of
these people.

Has your group published the cemetery info for Tyonek?

I would be very interested to hear from you.
Coleen Mielke
Wasilla)
The State of Alaska keeps all the vital records. Their address is:
Bureau of Vital Statistics
Dept of Health and Social Services
5441 Commercial Blvd.
Juneau, AK 99801
(907) 465-3391
Fax: (907) 465-3618
Access to death, marriage and divorce records filed in the Bureau of Vital Statistics office is restricted for 50 years after the date of the event to family members and their legal representatives. When ordering a death, marriage, or divorce record, you must state your relationship to the person named on the certificate, or your reason for needing the record.

Explanation and forms are posted at this site:
http://www.vitalrec.com/ak.html#State

Loretta,
You have been so kind, thank you very much.
I have no experience really in genealogy and there has been a lot of trial and error.
Would it be possible for you to share with me how to obtain a copy of the death certificate or the will? Still looking for other
clues, such as other children or marriages.
We do know that there is a sister or half sister that is older. We have been in touch with her and there appears to be another sister/half sister or a child she helped raise.
Again, thank you for the information that you have shared. Any advice you can give me to continue to learn of his family would be appreciated.
Sinceley,
Linda

I am not sure my reply actually returned to you...
Thank you so much for your prompt response. Marion is deceased. Marina is her chuch name and I didn't know which name would be used. Her parents are Nick and Doris. Can you share with me the date of her death and if known where she may have died?
My son thought she was buried in Tyonek, would you know if she had been moved to Kenai?
Any information you can share about her would be appreciated. He doesn't know her birth date, but we think she was born in Kenai.
thank you again,
Linda Seigler for Shawn Seigler

Hi Roberta.
Thanks for the reply.
I was in contact with my grandma Lila for the past couple of years, after having lost touch for over 30 years! Unfortunately, she did pass away last February. Very sad, but after the hip surgery and other complications, she just couldn't hang in there any longer.
She never did find Ted's obit, but it was sent to me by another researcher.
Nice to hear from you - and thanks again.
Connie
