I am searching for any record on Massa Effemka a Denaina from Stoney River born abt 1893

She married a Denis Parent, he is well known. You will find Denis Parent with spouse Mary Parent (Massa's Christian name) on many census records at the time.

She had a daughter previous by the name of Annuska. Annuska later took the name Annie Parent born abt 1907.

Massa Effemka is my great grandmother and Annuska would be my great aunt.

Massa (Mary Parent) later had a daugther also named Mary Parent born 11/25/20 who is my grandmother. She had a husband by the last name of Edwards/Dolby. Mary was also sister to Sam. My mother was later born in Bethel.

Anybody have these records in private?

I have found it impossible to search out Native records.
Hi Tom,
I found your mother in the Verheecke Family Tree, trees.ancestry.com/tree/21789313/person/1134320192. You probably want to contact the owner. That family tree says that Mary Henry Verheecke died 30 Sept. 1993 in Rapid City, Pennington, South Dakota.

You'll want a copy of her obituary because that should list all of her siblings and where they were living in 1993 and might mention her parents' names.

I don't know about finding obituaries in South Dakota but that's a good question to ask on the Pennington County Message Board.

I also found a Lucy G. Nicolai
Born: 10 Oct 1918
Last Residence: Kwethluk, Bethel, Alaska
Died: 17 Sept. 1996
Source: Social Security Death Index.

That Last Residence field may NOT be correct because the Social Security dept. uses it for other info too. However since it's the only clue we have at this time, might as well start there. We can't look at her death certificate because they're on hold for 50 years from the date of death.

Lucy's obituary might be found at the Alaska State Historical Library, http://library.state.ak.us/hist/newspaper/newspaper.html .

You'll want to look into the records at the Alaska State Archives, archives.state.ak.us/genealogy/genealogy.html .
Successful Searching!

HER SON

Richard 'Dick' H. Blakeslee Sr.
Obituary

Kasilof resident Richard "Dick" H. Blakeslee Sr. died Sunday, June 20, 2004, in a boating accident while fishing on the Kenai River. He was 64.

A celebration of life will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai. VFW Post No. 10046 will perform military honors at 4:30 p.m. Mr. Blakeslee's ashes will be scattered on the Fuller Lakes Trail in Cooper Landing at a later date.

Mr. Blakeslee was born Feb. 22, 1940, in Los Angeles. He was raised in Oroville, Calif., and graduated from Oroville High School in 1957. He entered the U.S. Navy and served 24 years until he retired in 1982. During the last 15 of his 24 years that he served, he was a U.S. Navy recruiter. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for the U.S. Post Office in Eugene, Ore., and Springfield, Ore., for 10 years until he retired in February 1995.

Mr. Blakeslee first came to Alaska on June 27, 1995. He and his wife made Kasilof their home for the past nine years. Mr. Blakeslee loved hunting deer, elk, caribou, black bear and wild fowl, fishing, woodworking and building Chuck Raymond sleds in the traditional Iditarod manner. He was a member of Kasilof Community Church.

"My husband Dick Blakeslee, who I called 'Tadee,' was a man's man who had a very tender and loving heart. He also was a man who loved God. He was his happiest when the both of us went hunting and fishing together. He would tell me that when I hunted black bear with him he saw more bear, usually browns, than when he hunted with other people," his wife said.

"Besides his love for hunting and fishing, he had a wonderful voice, which he used to sing. Every time he sang, it was because the Lord had told him in his heart to sing that song in church. He loved his 24-year Naval career, which he talked about often."

Mr. Blakeslee was preceded in death by his father, Charles Stewart Blakeslee; and mother, Ruth Linnea Blakeslee.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Jane Blakeslee of Kasilof; sons, Stewart Lee Blakeslee of Everett, Wash., and Richard Harold Blakeslee Jr. of Walterville, Ore.; daughters, Cheryl L. Root of Sutherland, Ore., and Diana A. Thatcher of Pendleton, Ore.; brother, Pete Blakeslee of Nome; four granddaughters; three grandsons; two nieces; and two great-nephews.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.

Peninsula Clarion

I am researching my family and it has led me to James F. Nicholai b: May 19, 1916 and d: 1991 in Bethel, Alaska. Also his brother Robert C. Nicholai b: July 4, 1918 and d: Jan. 11, 2006 in Bethel, Alaska. They are both my Paternal Grand Uncles. Parents are William Nicholai and Beatrice Pearl Axford. I also know that it is possible that August Nicolai and Amelia (mnu) are Williams parents.

I am hoping to find more information on the family tree. Can someone please help me with any information on any of these family members or other information on the family?

Thanks in advance.
That's the right man, thanks, and that's about as much as I have been able to find out myself so far. What I'm actually interested in is the period somewhere between 1900, when he left Michigan (Calumet/Keweenaw), and 1914, when he died in Minnesota (Duluth). His brothers Wilhelm (on the census record William) and Johannes also spent some time in the States before returning to Finland. After disappearing around 1900 Matt was supposed to have been seen in San Francisco and the states of Washington and Oregon and possibly in Alaska. NB Being a paying member I now have access to the documents in Ancestry.Co, which is of great help also in contacting people with similar research interests.
He never divorced his wife in Finland, but rumor has it that he remarried. A death certificate from Minnesota from 1914 says that the deceased person called Matt Fogde was a widower, but it's hard to say whether my great grandfather really remarried or not.

!Muchas gracias por su interés en el caso de mi bisabuelo!
Anyone familiar with a Matt Fogde from Malax, Finland? Sometime in the early 1900s he was searching for radio crystals in or near Aniak by the Kuskokwim River? His name is mentioned in an article written by Herman Werner Reeth.

Search back on: Re: Anna Wassili of Alaska

My search is back on in 2006.

This spring I have talked with my uncle that lives in Anchorage (my mom's older brother)...still have questions for him; but, got some answers.

My uncle says the following:
1. Anna died in 1942 from tuberculosis.
2. My uncle was sent to Holy Cross in 1939 to go to the Catholic Missionary school.
3. My uncle remembers many people from the book, "Bethel - The First 100 Years (1885-1985)."
4. He remembers living, for the longest time, in a house located between the McDonald's Roadhouse and Swanson's Store in Bethel.
5. My mother and a younger brother went to Holy Cross after my grandmother died. My mother lived with an uncle in Holy Cross for a while.
6. My grandmother was born in Kwethluk. I still have to ask him what year and who her parents were.
7. My grandmother's Yupik eskimo name means blueberries and I spell it phonetically Jijuwok; "J" as in June, "i" as in it, "ju" as in jew, and "wok" as in a chinese wok.

See attached pictures of my grandmother and the man I think is my grandfather Frank McDougal.
Edvard Johnsen born 10 January 1875

I am looking for any information on an Edvard/Edward Johnsen born on the Gjolmesli group of farms in Orkdalen, Sor-Trondelag, Norway. On his 1918 draft registration he recorded his residence as Iditarod but the only Edward Johnsen or johnson I could find in the 1920 Federal Census was located in Bethel.

I wonder if anyone might have any death records of this man. his father was Jon Olsen Gjolmesli and mother Uldrikke Jonsdatter.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to help a friend in Norway find information on her great great grandfather.

Thanks in advance,
Barb Bednarz

Try putting in just the first names into the search engine of the census.
It is very hard searching the Alaska census as there were a lot of Russian and Scandiavian accents there and the census takers probably had trouble understanding them. Good luck
