On May 1 1845 Nancy Petegrew (late Nancy Ash) received final papers on a quarter section of land in Cherokee Co, AL. I can't tell which surname she would have had at that time. Was she the widow Nancy ASH who had married a PETEGREW in the interim? Or was her name Nancy PETEGREW when the land was first filed for and has since married a man named ASH. I found an 1840 census record for Nancy Ash in Cherokee Co, Alabama but can find no other records. Her son G. H. ASH, born in 1840 in Cherokee Co.; has not been found anywhere in the 1850 census record and in 1860 was in Texas.
