Voncille Stuart was born on 16 Jan 1908, in Butler Co., Alabama. Larry Baxley

Voncille Baxley died on 1 Dec 1971, in Dadeville, Tallapoosa Co., Alabama.

I would like to get an obituary for her from the local newspaper, if available.
Yes, this is the Coley Rowe that I'm researching. He was bi-racial, had blue eyes and light skin, per my friend who is his great granddaughter. Coley's father was Dowdell Rowe and his mother Louiza ?? Olivia, his first wife, died 1922, Cora was his second wife. I don't know what happened to Ollie, the daughter of Coley and Olivia.

The Coley Rowe (born 1893) I am looking for was listed variously as colored, black and mulatto.
He is son of Louis (Lewis) Rowe (1861-1924) and Amelia (Mealey or Mealia) Pearson (1864-1947).
Louis is the son of Charlie Rowe and Arnie.
Amelia Pearson is the daughter of Henry Pearson and Adline.
I'd be delighted to contact anyone researching this family.
Thanks

The Coley Rowe you're finding living in Rome the 1920 census is the "other" Coley Rowe. Our Coley is also in the 1920 census, living with his wife Olivia and two sons in Camp Hill. It's confusing because both Coleys were born about the same time and lived in the same area. I think the Coley living with Annie might be the one who was in the military. He died in 1979.

I am researching the Rowe family for a Walls family descendant as possibly connected to Annie Johnson (who was living with a Coley Rowe in 1920, Rome, Tallapoosa, Alabama).
Annie was 17 and her husband Jack was, I believe, laboring at the Flat Top Mining Camp. Jack & Annie went to Wheeling, WV, where he was a miner. Their descendants went to Canton, Ohio.
Perhaps her brother was the "other" Coley Rowe? In any case, you may have sorted out the Rowes in your research, so I'd like to be in touch.
Sandy

Update on my post: I found out that Coley Rowe was born 1894 and that his parents were Dowdell "Dowd" Rowe (b. about 1861, d. 1942) and his mother was Louiza. Coley and his wife Olivia appear to have had three children, not two; Jacie, Woody, and Ollie Mae (b. 1920). Would like to know any other information.

Does anyone know where Tinsley Cemetery is? My friend's great, great grandfather Dowdell Rowe is buried there. His son Coley Rowe married Olivia Tinsley (actually her maiden name was Milner but apparently she went by her step-father's name or he adopted her).

Is the cemetery near Camp Hill?

I can give you a good amount of info on Maudie Mae Speaks' ancestors. Please email me directly at mtaunton@mindspring.com with your email address.

I have a marriage date of 17 May 1914 for Maudie's marriage to Ransom Meadows.

There is a Walter Cawthern, age 16, listed in Madison Co., AL in the 1910 census; he was the son of Walter (age 55) and Annie (age 45) Cawthern. The family was all born in AL, though. Could this be the Walter you're looking for?

Michelle

looking for Walter Carthon/Cauthen/Cothran, etc.

He is the grandfather of a dear friend of mine who has been trying to find his ancestry.

This Walter and Maudie May Speakes had his father Leonard Oliver Carthon in 1912, but Walter died in storms so the story goes.

Haven't found anything on his existance whatsoever other than a delayed birth certificate of Leonard Oliver Carthon that states his father was from South Carolina, born in 1890.

Maudie May married Ransom Meadows in about 1914 a couple of months after she had another child then married Luther James Jordan prior to the 1920 census. No records of the Meadows marriage either.

Very confusing!

The Tallapoosa River is the main river through this county. The Battle of Horseshoe Bend, part of the War of 1812, was fought here. There are lots of hills and tributaries that feed into the river. In 1911, most people still got around on foot. A bad storm, a wrong turn, a slip, and it would be easy for someone to go missing. Heck, there is mostly forest land there now. It would be easy to get lost. Add wildlife and you can imagine what could happen.

Wow that adds two more Jesse Freemans in the mix. I am thinking that my Jesse Freeman is the son of Nicholas H Freeman and he continued to stay in Alabama where the family is today. I am worried because I found two Jesses in different locations in the same year and I do not want to mix the two up and list the wrong parents/kids etc to the wrong Jesse. Ain't it fun. Thank you for the info, seems to be a lot of Freemans in Alabama and Texas.

I don't know, of course, what kinds of records those might have been. I'll ask if and when I get back. As in most, if not all, other jurisdictions, wills and deeds were recorded in legal "blank books" with printed page numbers so that it would be obvious if any pages were removed. The books had pages in the front where a running index could be recorded. The first entry in the index under "A" for instance, would be for the first deed (or will) recorded for someone whose surname began with "A". So the index was alphabetized only by the first letter of the surname. "Mc" was generally separate from "M" and would include names that began with either of the prefixes "Mc" or "Mac". Deed books had both "Direct" and "Indirect" indices - one indexed the deeds by grantor, the other by grantee. Later these indices were transcribed into index books, which would give the names, book number or letter, and page, so that if you didn't know when a deed had been recorded, you could look in those.

The first will book is in bad shape, but the rest are good. I only saw one volume (a deed book, if I remember correctly), where the pages had been cut out and laminated, then put into a new binding. I'm sure they'd like to do this with all the old volumes, to preserve them, but it has to be an expensive process.

"Loose papers" such as those your informant said were unindexed, could have been about other things. In only one courthouse (Chester County, SC, if I remember correctly) and one state archives (also SC) have I seen boxes with actual wills, rather than just the ones transcribed by a clerk into will books. I'd imagine they exist elsewhere, as well.

You may know all of this about how wills and deeds were recorded, but if so, maybe the information will help someone else.

It can get frustrating at times, but then, if genealogy research were too easy it probably wouldn't be so fascinating and fun!

Some of the older books do have loose pages, but there were no references in the indexes that were a part of the deed books, either. The oldest Will Book had a more recent card index, so it's possible it did not have an original index and that there are missing pages. I didn't think to check for that. Next time!

Ross, I did not find anything on a Lacks in the Probate Court records other than Solomon's will - no land sales, no will for Jane, nothing for any Lacks. It may be that there were sales by Solomon's brothers, just later in time than the deed books I checked.

For what it's worth, I found nothing on my Pattersons in the area, either, beyond the land purchases from the government. No sales, no wills. Perhaps probate settlements when there was no will were not recorded in the Will Books? I didn't have a lot of time, unfortunately, just part of a morning. Next time I visit I'll try to figure out what was going on.

In the meantime, the Probate Court has a website with a telephone number you can call for genealogy searches. There's probably a charge for a search, but they would at least be able to tell you what would have happened to property when a someone died without a will in that time frame. http://www.tallaco.com/probate.asp is the website, and the phone number for "geneological services" (someone needs to learn to spell!) is 1-256-825-4266. They charge $1/per page for copies of records.

I have a Charles Green Turnham in my family records, but he was from Jefferson County, AL. Born in 1868 to George Washington Green Turnham and his second wife, Sarah Ann Fields. There is a possibility that he was born somewhere else as George Washington Green Turnham migrated from Tallapoosa County, then Coosa County and eventually Jefferson County. He may have lived in Shelby County because his oldest daughter, by his first wife, married a man from there. But he bought land in Jefferson County and is buried on the property. I can provide more information if you think this is the same person.

Greetings, Howell Holley researchers. I am here to share information and to request it. I am descended from Howell by one of the illigetimate children he had with his mistress Nancy Hodge. Howell and Nancy had 6 children, and if you look at the 1840 Census, you will find Howell living with a younger woman and 6 minor children (although he later denied this living arrangement in his answer to the divorce petition filed by his wife Elizabeth). Now, his illigetimate daughter, Caroline Matilda, married a man named Levi C Ponder. On the 1850 Census record where Elizabeth is found, you will find that she is living next to Levy(sp) C Ponder and his wife Caroline and their infant daughter Nancy J. Just a few families above Levi is Green Lee Holley, and his wife and children. Evidently, the half-siblings got along quite well. I know of two sons that Howell had by Nancy Hodge; James M and John. What I am lookig for is a probate record for Howell after his death in 1850. Can anyone help? Thanks much!

Margaret,
If you go to Tallapoosa co Al and would have time to check to see if Jane Lacks had a will or what happended to the property she was living on that Solomon Lacks left her when he died I will gladly send you some money to help with expenses and your time. I live in Dallas so I have no way to check with the probate office or to see who lives on the property now where Solomon and Jane Lacks lived near Jackson't Gap Al. I don't understand why if Solomon and Jane Lacks owned land then why is it then when he died in 1854 was he able to leave most of their land to his three brothers in Virginia and only left Jane a small section of land to live on. I know that back then every thing was in the husband's name but it seems like she would have owned at least half of the land but maybe back then it did not work that way. Would you have any information about that? Thanks, Ross

Hi,
Thanks so much for the information about Solomon Lacks. I was able to find the location of the third piece of property that Solomon Lacks received in Talapoosa co Al.He received that property in 1851. He died in 1854. All three properties were 40.11 acres. Were these land grants and if so why only 40 acres. The land grants in Gerogia were usually for much more acreage. Were they headright grants or bounty grants for military service?
