Shelby County Masons

I am researching all Masons in Shelby county in the 1840 to 1860 time period as I believe most, or all of them connect to my gg grandfather, Charles Mason, who married Sarah Ann Williams of that county in 1853. Sarah Ann is the daughter of Hugh M. Williams, and Rachel Post Williams. I have been reviewing the probate records for Shelby county, and for the years 1839 to 1843, Noel Mason was the Clerk of the County Court. Noel is a brother to Charles Mason. Another brother, George Wiley Mason, married Lucinda Post who is a first cousin to Sarah Ann Williams. There is also a George M. Mason, and a William Mason mentioned in these probate records. There is a Job Mason mentioned in the 1827 record, who mentions in his Will his wife Anna, and children Sally, James, John, David, William, Betsy Gilbert and Ruah Hardin. Noel Mason, Clerk, dies suddenly in office at the early age of 31, in September 1843. I am interested in contacts from anyone having information on these families.

This is a long shot, but I am looking for birth records from Alabama in 1899, possibly from Shelby County.
My ancestor Jack Walsh moved from Kentucky to work in the Alabama coal mines sometime in the late 1890's and had girl twins, Martha and Ella in 1899. His wife was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Patterson. They were back in Kentucky by the time the 1900 Census was taken.
If anyone can help, or point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

John G. Wallace and wife Charity lived in Shelby County 1830. They had children named Jonathan, Leander, Alexander, James and Mary Jane. It is pretty well established was became of Mary Jane, but as for the other children it is unknown. All the sons were about the right age to have served in the confederacy and probably did so, possibly some never made it home. Charity remarried to Thomas McAdams after the death of John before 1850.

I'm desperately trying to find information on my grandfather's side of the family. My GF was Willie Hobbs aka W H Hobbs although he had no middle name the family, as it was common to do back then...used the last name as the middle initial. His father was Ed Hobbs or E Hobs aka Edward Hobbs. Ed was originally from Georgia as were his parents and he was killed by a train October 21, 1911 here in Houston county; Dothan, AL. His funeral was conducted at Selma Baptist but they have no records of anything. Ed was married to a May-Lula (we were always told her name was Mary) on the 1910 census and had stepchildren of "Tenley" although their names were Andrew aka Ander and Noah Finely / Fenley. Ed apparently had a son named James (grown child and perhaps he is the son listed on the 1910 census. Nontheless....I've been going in circles for YEARS and finding no one with any information.

Any one out there with the answers would be appreciated!

BELCHER'S PLEASE HELP

I have posted this information before but still have yet to get anywhere-- if anyone can please help, it would be much appreciated; the only photos I have are of the WALKER'S and the three BELCHER brothers:

My gg grandfather, Wyatt Franklin BELCHER (most often went by Frank)was born to James M. and Henrietta Josephine WALLACE (daughter of Sidney Algernon WALLACE) in 1883. "Frank" had 2 brothers (James Walter "Walter" who was a WWI vet.) and John Henry "Henry" BECLHER and two sisters (Elizabeth -married a Bibb Co. HORTON and Annie M. - married J. HOLLEY). The following surnames also went to southern Illinois after 1920.

I am able to locate the family with the exeption of extracting enough information about Frank's father, James in only 1 (1900) census which says he was born in AL. However the death certificate of Frank states TN. The entry for James (Bibb Co.) is written on the very last line and barely legible. I am unable to find this BELCHER line. The only living daughter says she does not remember him as he was born and died prior to her birth; she also says that she did not believe they were related to any of the BELCHER'S in Bibb Co.

James' wife is widowed by 1910 and I am, again, unable to locate James in any other census wherein I can prove it is him.

PLEASE HELP! I've been working on this for 3 years and have gotten nowhere.

James M. BELCHER M: Henrietta Josephine WALLACE Mar 1882

Wyatt Franklin "Frank" BELCHER M: Lucy Bell WALKER (daughter of Ella Frances ACKER and William Thomas WALKER) had 4 children: Doris 1915-1996, Frances Elaine, Frank, Jr. (died in infancy), and Lucy Josephine.

Elizabeth BELCHER M: James "Jim" HORTON
Annie M. BELCHER M: J. HOLLEY(Y)
John Henry M: after he went to IL
James Walter BELCHER: M: after his service in OH and then moved to Detroit MI.

If anyone has these lines and can/will help, please do so.

Again, thank you!

Annie

Thomas Witherspoon Smith (1786-1841) came to Alabama from Roane County, Tennessee about 1816. He settled in the Shelby County area where he was elected one of the five first judges of the county in 1821. Thomas W. Smith a married Rebecca Mitchell (1782-1856) in Jonesbrough, Washington County, Tennessee in 1805 by a Rev. James Witherspoon. Rebecca Mitchell Smith is a daughter of Adam and Elizabeth Machen Mitchell of Jonesbrough. Thomas W. Smith had 10 children and appeared in the 1820 and 1830 Shelby County Federal Census. His oldest child, James Witherspoon Smith (1806-1841) was elected Clerk of the Circuit Court of the county and served 1827-1829. Thams W. Smith, wife and seven children moved to Texas about 1837. James W. Smith became the first county judge of Travis County, Texas. Both James W. Smith and his father were killed in separate incidents by Comanche Indians in Austin, Texas. Children of Thomas W. Smith, Ann (1811-?), Nancy(1823-?) and Thomas Smith (1813-1883), remained in Shelby county. Ann married a Brice M. Burgess, Nancy married a William Tolbert Stamps and Thomas married a Mary McElroy-a daughter of Alexander McElroy. I am seeking to correspond with researchers about Smith/Mitchell/Burgess/Stamps/McElroy family history.

I am looking for anyone who recognizes the names below. Most of the people mentioned resided at one time in Vandiver, Alabama located in Shelby County. My grandmother Ella B Brasher daughter of James David (J.D.) Thompson and Sarah Hannah Elliott (all of Vandiver Alabama) kept a very detailed family bible. Using this I was able to trace ggggrandfathers on my grandfather's side. I also have more information on Sarah and J.D.'s family. Ella B married Hovah Augustus Sylvester James Brasher in the early 1920's. The lived in Vandiver Alabama and raised 5 children: Willie Earl (deceased), Benjiman Clifford, Duel Kenneth (deceased), Stella Louise (my mother), and Reginald Roland. Hovah parents were Lampkin and LuRilla (Whitfield) Brasher. Lampkin and Rilla had 9 children: Hovah (deceased), Buford, L.B., Gene (deceased), Leonard (deceased), Edward (deceased), Raymond, Leslie (deceased), and Eunice (deceased).
Lampkin's parents were Augustus (Gus) and Sara Jane (Vandiver) Brasher. Rilla's parents were Vester and Jettie (Andrews) Whitfield. Augustus' father's name was Issac Brasher I know little of him so far. Sara Jane's father was J.L. Vandiver. Vester Whitfield's father was Jim. Jettie's father was J.W. Whitfield. If you know any of these people please e-mail me. I still live in the Vandiver community and there are many Brashers still living here. There is a very large cemetary with many Brasher, Thompson, Vandiver, and Whitfield burial sites in it. If you want to share information, just drop me a line.

Mollie's and Clarence's children appear on 1910 and later census distributed in Texas living with her two sisters or on their own. I do not have a date or place of death for Mollie Jones, but I would be interested in any information.

Daniel was born in Shelby County in 1847 and died in Handley, Texas, in 1924.

Thomas' middle initial was G or J. The transcription of his marriage license gave a G, but 1860 census records give a J. Thomas may have been born in South Carolina.

George Musick's daughter Phebe and her husband Smith Randall

From George Musick's will in Rutherford County, NC in 1809 I find mention of daughter Phebe Randall to whom he leaves land, but prohibits the sale of the land. Instead it is to be passed on to her children.

On 1-16-1817 in Rutherford County, I find Smith Randle and wife Phebe Randle selling property to Henry Green. It mentions the land being given by George Muscik to his wife Phebe. I assume that wife is an error and should have been daughter.

On 05-15-1819 in Rutherford County, I find Smith Randle and wife Phebe selling property to John Moore. It also mentioned that the land was "divised" to Phebe Randall and heirs by the last will and testament of George Musick.

In the book Alabama Records Volume 216 Shelby County I find the following entry:

Book A, page 39. Rutherford Co., N.C. JOHN MOON of the State and County aforesaid, Power of Attorney to JONATHANM ERICK, Esq. of Shelby Co., Ala. Said MOON on the 22nd of Febnrary last purchased of SMITH MNDALL and Wife PHEBE of Rutherford Co., N.C. a tract of land on the Green River. The title lies in the Children of the said RAI{DAIL and his Wife PHEBE and they gave bond that the children would make title as they arrived at lawful age. Said RANDALL and wife and family are about to remove to Alabama and the said MERICK is to take title from the children as they
come of age. 21 May 1819

Having traced Phebe and Smith Randle to Shelby County, AL I begin to find criminal records for Smith Randall/Randle:

In this story I find Smith Randall as a Counterfeiter and his wife Phoebe is mentioned. http://www.downhomemagazine.com/PDFs/Features/Alabama%20Coun...

In Shelby County court records in 1823 & 1824 I find complaints filed that Smith Randal has threatened Phebe and burned her house and kitchen.

In Alabama Legislative acts I find the following:
http://www.legislature.state.al.us/misc/history/acts_and_jou...

Sec. 53. And be it further enacted, That Hugh Henry, sheriff of Bibb county, be, and he is hereby allowed the sum of fifty four dollars; and forty cents, for victualling as prisoners, John C. Brown, Daniel Gentry, Jesse A. Brown, Benjamin Camp, and Smith Randall, state prisoners, on producing to the comptroller of public accounts sufficient vouchers, and the comptroller, on producing such vouchers, is hereby authorised to draw on the state treasury for the above sum.

Pebby Randall is listed on the 1830 census in Shelby County, AL.

In the book Cemetery Census of Shelby County, Alabama Volume No. II I find her buried in the Richardson-Randall cemetery (b: 4-16-1780 d: 9-27-1840) near her presumed sons Benjamin Franklin Randall and George M. Randall. Both Benjamin and George participated in her probate.

Does anyone know anything about Smith Randall/Randle? I can’t find a marriage record for Smith Randall and Phebe Musick. I have seen some postings on familysearch.org and on Rootsweb Worldconnect that list Phebe’s husband as Nicholas Randall, but there are no sources listed. I have also seen a couple of references to Harry K. Randall being Phebe’s husband, but there are also no sources listed. The only thing I can find is Smith Randle listed on the 1810 census in Rutherford County, NC.

Does anyone know of any documented proof that Benjamin Franklin Randall and George M. Randall are the children of Phebe Musick Randall? There is some circumstantial evidence, but I have not seen anything that proves it. The problem with the probate records is that Benjamin was Sherriff in Shelby County, so he administered a lot of estates. We can’t assume he was administering Phebe’s as her son.

Any help proving that Benjamin and George are Phebe’s sons and any information on the origins, marriage and potential full name of Smith Randall would be greatly appreciated.
His father, Stephen Jackson Jones, born 1848 in Alabama moved to Navarro County Texas around 1878 or so.
Clarence Jones

My g-grandmother Levie Buchanan, born Feb. 25, 1873 in Harpersville Shelby County was living in Kelleys Creek in St Clair in 1900 with her son Howard Buchanan, born 1896 in Harpersville (1900 census St Clair attached). They lived with people named Constance Bowers and Barbara Bowers, both 65. Constance was born in Germany and Barbara in Alabama. I have also attached two files for the 1900 Census in Shelby County for Clarence Jones, b1869. I am seeking any information on Clarence Jones -- marriages, middle names, his work, where he went after 1900, did he divorce Mollie, did he remarry? Anything -- just hope somebody locally can help. Thanks.

In 1920 and 1930 census records, John H. Hill is listed with wife Fannie. She was Fannie Manning and was apparently married to Arthur Brown prior to marrying John Hill. He has children Goldman and Tandy C Hill and other older children. She had children Robert L and Lettie O, both of whom were known as Brown as adults. In the census records they are first listed as Robert and Lettie Hill in 1920, then as Robert and Lettie Brook in 1930. John H and Fannie also had John Hill JR, Van D Hill, Louise Hill, Marvin Hill,Paul Hill, Dolly Faye Hill, and Betty Jo Hill. At some point Robert L moved to live with his aunt and uncle, Rosa Lee Manning Powell and Walter Powell. Robert L Brown is my father whom I never knew. Any information on this family would be welcome.
