Original Muster roll of Company E, 17th Alabama Regiment

The Randolph Leader August 1901

NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 31, 1901

BOYS IN GRAY;

ORIGINAL ROLL OF A COMPANY FORMED IN 1861

Monday morning, Captain B.F. Weathers brought into our office a tattered piece of paper, a clipping from The Montgomery Advertiser of ancient date. There is a considerable interest attached to this article, and we shall reproduce it for the benefit and pleasure it may be to the descendants and relatives of the old soldiers and to the veterans yet living.

This clipping was found in the Bible of the late Mrs. Lucy White shortly after her death in this city the first of June. On the roll appears the name of a son of Mrs. White, Henry C. White, who died from exposure during the war and for whom his mother deeply grieved for many years.

This is the original muster roll of Company E, 17th Alabama Regiment, which was composed of volunteers from Roanoke and surrounding territory. It was organized Sept. 9, 1861 under the name of "The Dowdell Rangers" named in honor of the father of our Judge Dowdell, the former being the representative of this district in congress at that time. On the battlefield of Shiloh, in which this company bore a heroic part, Lieutenant B.F. Weathers was promoted to the rank of Captain. The names marked by a star are those who are still living, numbering 26.

Wiley E. White, Captain
Benjamin E. Reed, 1st Lieut.
* Benjamin F. Weathers, 2d.
Obituary William J Benefield

From The Roanoke Leader

NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, January 27, 1915

TRAGIC END OF A GOOD CITIZEN

This entire section was shocked by the news that Mr. Wm. J. M. Benefield had met a tragic death at his home at Johnson’ Cross Roads at 8 o’clock last Thursday evening. He had been in ill health for several years, suffering greatly with his head. He retired early the fated evening, complaining of this trouble, and later arose and secured a shotgun and inflicted a wound near his heart, from the effects of which death resulted in a short while. It was thought that his affliction had temporarily dethroned his reason.

The following afternoon many friends and neighbors gathered at High Pine church to pay their respects to the memory of a good neighbor and a valuable citizen. Appropriate services were conducted by Rev. E. M. Glenn.

Mr. Benefield was a member of the church at High Pine and was sincerely esteemed by all who knew him. His unfortunate death will be a loss to his country. He leaves a family and many friends to mourn his death. The deceased was 64 years of age.
Sorry, but this obit is not for Lucinda Benefield, but it's for her daughter-in-law, Sarah Benefield. I have Sarah's death cert, and the date matches. Sarah was also a Mrs. Caleb Benefield, as she married Caleb Cox Benefield, II, Lucinda's son. According to her death cert she was 80, not 84 as stated in the newspaper. Some of these names can be so confusing. :o)

The Roanoke Leader February 1917
NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County,
Alabama for FEBRUARY 1917

NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 14, 1917

Three deaths have occurred within the past few days that have brought sadness to many hearts in this town and section. The first was that of Mrs. Millard F. Ussery, which occurred Friday morning last at the home of her brother Mr. J.J. Awbrey, this city, where she was taken some weeks ago, returning from South Carolina, being unable to complete the journey to her home in Wedowee. Her stay in South Carolina under treatment of a specialist failed to benefit her and the fatal ending of her long illness was not a surprise to her loved ones, though a grievious loss. This good woman leaves a husband and several children besides her brothers, Messrs. A.M. and J.J. Awbrey of this place, and many other relatives. The remains were carried to Wedowee Saturday, accompanied by a number of relatives and friends, and funeral services were held at that place, attended by a large congregation. Rev. Mr. Hammett, the pastor, was in charge of the services. The pastors of the Roanoke Baptist and Methodist churches were present and invited to take part in the obsequies. The deceased was held in sincere esteem by those who knew her.
Obituary Dr. William (Buck) Weathers

The Roanoke Leader May 1916, page 1:

DR. WM. WEATHERS GONE TO REWARD

When Dr. William Weathers was called from the labors and sufferings of life to the reward of the faithful on the other side, Randolph lost one of her truest, noblest men and one of her most useful citizens. After many months of ill health, death came to him as a messenger of release on Wednesday night, May 24th, at the old homestead near High Shoals, in the house where he was born nearly 69 years ago.

The unfailing attention of a good wife, the thoughtful kindness of devoted children, and the solicitude of numerous relatives and friends, made peaceful and tranquil the twilight of life of this honored father and friend. Having "fought a good fight and kept the faith," he had nothing to fear. Calmly he awaited the summons, and cheerfully obeyed the call to "walk through the valley of the shadow of death," knowing that his Savior and Captain led the way. The remains were brought to Roanoke Thursday afternoon, accompanied by many of the neighbors of the deceased, and at three o'clock at the First Baptist church funeral services were conducted by Revs. J. W. Rucker and E. M. Glenn. The ministers paid high and deserved tributes to the character of the deceased. The remains were then laid to rest in the Cedarwood cemetery.

Dr. Weathers joined the Confederate army as a lad of sixteen years and made a valiant soldier. He was a useful member of the Baptist church and was a man of broad views and wide sympathies. He was active in all good causes for the uplift of his people. For a number of years he served as a member of the county board of education. Dr. Weathers was a worthy representative of one of the oldest and best families in our county. He has left to his children a good name - in a life of devoted service to his race. Like many others, the editor of this paper feels that he has lost a friend.
I recently came into possession of a collection of documents and family photographs that was headed for the trash. Although this is not my family, I'm certain that someone would be interested in them.

The documents with the photos lead me to suspect that the attached group photo is Luther Walls Johnson and his brothers (because of the strong family resemblance). Luther Johnson was born on June 15, 1896 in Randolph County, son of B.(Benjamin?)D. Johnson and Ellen Martin Johnson.

Luther Johnson was married to Hattie Lou Kaylor Johnson, born November 3, 1898, the daughter of Holly Herbert Johnson and Annie Elizabeth Lovvorn Johnson.

Luther and Hattie Johnson had a daughter named Louise, and another daughter named Joanne born April 18, 1940 in Heard County Georgia.

This collection is a family treasure and needs to be returned to the family. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mignon

Hi Linda,
I ran up on your e-mail from 2003 to Doris Smith in reference to the Henson/Hinson/Hanson line and an address of someone who is working on that line. I am working on hat line and wondered if I could e-mail this person or if you would send them my address. Any help would be appreciated.

Betty S. White

Hello,
I'm looking for any information regarding Wiley Cook and his wife Nancy. Wiley is my 3rd great grandfather. He was born in 1800 in Elbert, GA. My last record of him is the 1860 Census and he is living in Randolph county, AL. I don't know his wife's maiden name nor when Wiley died or where he might be buried. His son Jeptha went back to GA and my line carries on from there. Any information you may have which will help me would be great. Thanks, Kim Cook

Oh my gosh...I have so many relatives in Clay and Randolph Counties; I would love to help you if I can or you help me out as well. I have only been researching for a little over a year, so I am not sure how much help I will be. I am researching the Griffin, Wilkerson, Sunday, McCrary, Atchison, Hunter, Allen, Boone, & Powell surnames. I have gotten quite far with a few of these ancestors, but the Wilkerson line is completely dead and has me stumped. Let me know if you can be of any help and if any of these names will help you.

Hello Patrick yes they had a daughter Mary Clementine born August 22,1860 and died August 12,1939. She was my gggrandmother and married Lucius T. Smith. I also think I have figured out the puzzle of Jeremiah Murphy Traylors wife Sarah Eunice. I believe by searching records that her name was Sarah Nunis daughter of Samuel Nunis as her children were named after her brothers and sisters. Also she had a brother Alfred that married Peggy F. Traylors sister to Jeremiah.

Investigators believed they had pieced together ten bodies.
MRS. ETHEL MURPHY, wife of BASIL MURPHY, CHARLOTTE WOODRUFF, her sister, and JOHN HEATH, a colored boy, who live near the scene of the crash were in the Roanoke hospital yesterday for treatment of injuries received when a piece of the bomber crashed through the roof into the bedroom of the home of BASIL MURPHY and exploded, tearing through the walls of the room and hurling wreckage all over the house.
MRS. LOIS WOODRUFF, the mother of MRS. ETHEL MURPHY and MISS CHARLOTTE WOODRUFF, who lives in the BASIL MURPHY home, stated yesterday that her daughters were at the time of the crash in a living room across the hall from the bedroom into which the B-29 part fell. They heard an explosion and ran into the hall, because they knew some of the WOODRUFF children were in the back of the house.
"The explosion blew the shoes off of ETHEL'S feet, and the girls were hit and knocked to the floor by flying pieces of wood and buried under the wreck." MRS. WOODRUFF said. "ETHEL got out first and pulled CHARLOTTE out."
The WOODRUFF children to whom the two victims were trying to make their way were unhurt. CHARLOTTE WOODRUFF was reported as improving at the hospital today; MRS. ETHEL MURPHY, who was pregnant, was reported in critical condition.

Continued on Page 2.

JOHN HEATH, brother of a servant in the MURPHY house, was just outside the house at the time of the crash and was seriously burned in the explosion.
The MURPHY home was in a state of complete wreckage yesterday; a piece of the bomber, believed to be the radio, was still in the middle of the bedroom floor; broken timber cluttered the bedroom and the hall beyond it. MRS. WOODRUFF said that the bomber piece had exploded after it crashed into the house and hurled "burning black liquid all over everything."
According to MARY LIZE HEATH, servant in the MURPHY home and sister of JOHN HEATH, the bomber was in flames before it hit the ground. She was walking between the house and a shed in the backyard when the crash came.
"I saw it coming, and it was all on fire," she said yesterday, her eyes still wide with horror. "It was in three pieces and I thought it was going to get me but I ran and got away from it."
Other eye witnesses, however, stated that they believed the plane did not catch fire until after it hit the ground. Lee Knight and Guy Seymore, who live about a half a mile down the road from the MURPHY house, stated that they saw the plane fly over almost touching the tree tops and barely missing the nearby house of Shelby Abner.
"We could tell that something was the matter; the plane was over on its side and it didn't sound right. In a minute we heard the explosion," Knight said.
The bomber, according to eyewitness accounts, came in from the nroth, circled back around and came over again from the west before it crashed into a cornfield.
There was no one spot yesterday which could have been called the center of the wreckage; small parts, none of them larger than a piece of the engine, were strewn over an area of cornfields, cotton fields, and woodlands which, according to the State Highway Patrol covered almost 20 acres. Parts of the bomber were still smoldering yesterday afternoon among the tombstones of a cemetery near the road.
MRS. WOODRUFF said that pieces of some of the bodies were thrown within a few yards of the MURPHY home. One body was hurled through a fence separating the MURPHY yard from a cotton field.
"There was one body out there without any head and without any legs," said Mary Lize Heath.
Seymore and Knight reported that they had run up to the scene of the crash when they heard the explosion and had seen "broken arms and legs and pieces of people all over everywhere."
According to investigators, one half-open parachute was found near one of the bodies, indicating that at least one of the bomber crew had attempted to jump but had been too low for his parachute to open.
The Army and the Highway Patrol were still investigating the wreckage yesterday afternoon.

The Anniston Star Alabama 1945-09-09

Partial List of Fatalities:
DONALD M. COULTER.
ROBERT T. HAUMAN.
RICHARD G. JEFFERSON.
Corp. RALPH F. KELLER.
MASON McCORMICK.
ROBERT C. SEILKOP.
Lieut. ROBERT C.
