The Three-Notch Road ran from outside of present day Phenix City, AL to Pensacola, FL. When it was surveyed out, three chops were made in trees to mark the route, thus the name Three Notch. There is a community called Three Notch in Bullock Co. AL that was named after this road. It went on down through Troy, AL; they have a street named Three Notch that was part of the original road. If my memory serves me correctly from what I have read, the road was constucted to be able to move military troops rapidly from Ft. Mitchell, AL to Pensacola, FL. I think it was constructed in the 1820's. Today, just bits and pieces of it remain.

Can someone tell me the location of the Old Three Notch Road that ran through part of Pike and Coffee Counties in Alabama? My Grandfather, Matthew Carnley, grew up a few miles above Bullock on the Old Three Notch Road.

I have the book "One Hunderd Fifty Years in Pike County"
In the frist chapter it talks about the Three Notch Trail. this was apparently one of the main roads into Troy. This was in the 1820's. Later it became- South Three Notch and North Three Notch. According to this book this was the startin place for many residences and businesses in Troy. the road is still here and runs through downtown Troy. I hope that this helps some.

Crenshaw County being formerly part of Pike and Covington counties (and others) also enjoys its stretch of the 3-notch Road. Joe R. Sport in his historical notes on early Crenshaw County says: "Of historical significance to the county is the Old Three Notch Trail, a military road which was to be used by General Jackson's troops. This road cut across the lower portion of the county near the present site of Dozier."
It is associated with the Friendship and Bullock communities in Crenshaw and with the Rose Hill area in Covington (across the river from Dozier).

There is no evidence that Andrew Jackson had anything to do with the Three Notch Road.
