I wanted to share this article I found in our libaray in Dothan,
Al. on John E. Cook
"Some Old People" Part 3, Troy
Messenger 1889-1891
John E. Cook (1889)
The above named gentleman was born in 1821, came of good old Southern stock, and is one of Pike's foremost and most enterprising farmer. He came to the county in 1844 and settled near
Monticello where he still resides. During all these years he has been known as an upright, honest, peaceable, law-abiding citizen.
Mr. Cook is well versed in the history of those early days when this section was in it's infancy and it is almost like a romance to hear him tell of the men and incidents that go to make the history of the county.
His plantation, one of the most desirable in the county, comprises a portion of what was once the town of
Monticello.
Mr. Cook has been married twice and has raised an interesting family. At the age of 68 he is hale and hearty, and what is better, has the esteem of his neighbors and all who know him.
