I have a Martha Duncan/Dunkin, daughter of John Duncan and sister of Abel Duncan/Dunkin Sr. The Martha that I have in my tree (she's listed in John Dunkin's will) was born about 1774 and was married to a John Bailey Williams. Martha was known as "Patsy".

I have a Caroline Duncan/Dunkin, daughter of Abel Dunkin Sr and his wife Sarah, born about 1818, first married to William Fondren 5 May 1849 and next to William Burt 7 Nov 1859. I may not be right about this since I haven't done any work on Caroline. Abel Sr was my ggg grandfather. I have a public tree under Lee's Trees that you're welcome to look at.

I'm sorry. I'm unable to help with the direct male descendant. I wish you luck with it. The reason that I'm writing is I have 2 Duncans-slash-Dunkins in my family tree which I've been unable to locate with any surety. I'm hoping that perhaps you have something on either of the "sisters"?

My ggreat grandfather William Burt married a Martha Dunkin in 1842 in Perry County. Date of birth for her ws 1818 in Edgefield Co, South Carolina. He then married a Caroline Dunkin Fondren in 1859. Her dob was 1830-Georgia. She had two children by her first marriage. On the 1860 census, Caroline lists her fathers' place of birth as SC.

Would you happen to know if either Abel or David was their father? Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.
My direct e-mail is Lesliewatts8@aol.com.

Sincerely
Rachelle Watts Ray

Lorenzo Dow Worrell Bolling

My great grandfather, Wesley J Worrell, and his third wife, Samantha Smith (Moon), had a son, Lorenzo Dow Worrell, born about 1866. When Wesley J died sometime after the 1870 census his widow placed the younger children with friends and family. Lorenzo Dow was placed with the Samuel Bolling family (1880 census, listed as "Howen" Worlds) and it seems that Lorenzo eventually adopted the name Bolling as his own. I have found him on every census (except 1890) living in either Perry County, Alabama or Columbus, Mississippi. I've based my assumptions on the names that appear on the census records.

Lorenzo Dow married Alice Coker and they had at least 9 children who have the surname of Bolling. The oldest was Samuel, followed by Joann, Bettie L, Peggy D, Ella R, Sarah M, Wesley J, Louis D, and Hugh M. If anybody has any other information about Lorenzo Dow or thinks that this may be incorrect then I would love to hear from you.

Thank you,

Lee Worrell Hermes

Have you found out anything more about this slave by the name of Dixon? My husband's great-grandfather was Newborn Griffin. Newborn had a son (my husband's grandfather)named Clyde Dixson Griffin. And, we named our son Dixson after him. This is the first I've heard of a slave being the possible father of Aaron and Joshua. Makes you wonder though how Clyde got his middle name. We do have the Griffin ancestry traced back to William Griffin I of England in the 1600's. However, there is no mention of Sarah being married or the father's name of her two boys. I'm wondering now if it was supposed to be a "family secret" about the boys being fathered by a slave. Thanks for any info you have.

Perry County has some nice little genealogy sites on line. Almost a complete cemetery listing on line is avaiable of every cemetery including small family cemeteries. I have Sanders in my family but they settled in the northwest corner of Perry County. Sprott is in east Perry County.

Do search for Perry County Alabama Genealogy sites and Perry County Alabama Cemeteries. I will almost bet that you will find some help. If not, you can you can give me your email and I will send the sites to you.

Lynda

My family has roots in Sprott. I have been searching my Fathers family- Moore/Sanders since Feb/2008. Sprott is a hard to find any records.
I also have been searching my Mother's family from Bibb county. Surnames Anderson/Lightsey.
My parents moved to Indiana from Alabama in 1946. I know there were Andersons in Detroit, Flint, Michigan Chicago, and Indiana.I remember some of the names of people that moved from the same area as my parents. Some of the names were Rutledge, Bray(have a obit of Joseph Nathan bray jr.),
I also remember seeing the Goree, Heard, and Abercombie(sp?) as neighbors in the census when researching the Moores. So they had to be related or neighbors.
My grandfather Jim Moore lived to be 102 yrs. old ,died in sprott. But I can't find a lot of info for him.
I am like you searching for roots in Sprott/Severe, perry county. I have so many questions, hope you can make sense out of my post.
If we don't have a connection maybe we still can help one another find information.
Hoping to connect some dots.
Pat Vaughn

Dunkin/Duncan DNA

I'm looking for a direct male descendant of Abel Dunkin, Jr who would be willing to do DNA testing for the Dunkin line. My great great grandfather, Abel Dunkin, Jr, was born about 1798 in Edgefield County, SC, and moved with his wife and other family members to Sprott in Perry County sometime in the mid-1800s. This project is an effort to satisfy a descrepancy in some of the genealogical research. It is believed that Abel, Jr and his brother David were twins; however, some researchers have different birthdays for the two. Ancestry tells me that we can put the question to rest by using a 46 marker DNA test for a descendant in each line. We already have DNA from a descendant of David Dunkin and now need a male from Abel, Junior's line.

I will order and pay for a kit from Ancestry.com for a willing participant. The simple test requires swabbing the inside of the cheeks, then returning the envelope to Ancestry where it will be processed and checked for matches with other Dunkin descendants.

If you would like more information please contact me.

Letha Worrell Hermes
leehermes@bellsouth.net.
Anyone looking for Daniel Cemetery in Sprott, I have just found that Daniel Cemetery and "Harry Rutledge Cemetery" are one and the same. I have been researching my family history and on a few of the death certificates Daniel Cemetery is listed as place of burial. I did an internet search for Daniel Cemetery and there was a geographic map that led me to an area off of County Road 183. I took pictures of the markers that were there and later saw these same names on a site by a drjudy that had several Perry County Cemeteries with Harry Rutledge Cemetery being one. I took the name of one of the markers and obtained the death certificate and it has Daniel Cemetery as place of burial. The earliest death certificate that I have is 1912 and the latest 1974 with Daniel Cemetery as burial site. Some of my family from this area are : Anderson, Bray, Carlisle, Daniel, Goree, Hornbuckle, King, Rutledge.
Hope this helps anyone who is looking for their ancestors' burial site.

We drove to Marion a few years ago and I found the marriage Lisence for Eliz. Reid and Bennet Wood. It was a small break through.
No, I have not known that there was a mention of the Flowers/ Wood connection in the Heritage Book. We were at the Library 2 days and I asked the Libraian about community books and she must have been new because she didn't know about any books specifically about different families in the county.
My sister discovered a book which stated that Nancy Flowers was the mother of the triplets who were born in Mississippi.
The second wife, Priscilla Wood,my great grandmother, always claimed to be the mother. It was a surprise. James L. Flowers, moved his family to Texas. By moving out of the state, family connections were lost, unless some of the Woods moved also. I'm hoping to locate more. I have copied these queries. Best of luck everyone

So glad you are doing more indepth research. I do have 2 questions. Would you be willing to share your source for believing that Elizabeth Wood is the daughter of Andrew Reid? I feel that she must be because she is there and they share the same last name. (Her's maiden). She is my G-G-Grandmother. Little Priscilla Ann is my G-Grandmother.
I would so much love to have proof of this. I can prove as far as Priscilla.
Question 2. Do you know who Memphisanny is. She is the person who told me through this message center that Elizabeth was listed in this Perry Co Census twice.
Please let me know what you discover. Thank you in advance, Maryann

Nothing new from my search. My interest in the Reid family is related to the Wood link through Elizabeth's marriage to Bennet H. Wood. I have a Wood connection in Perry and Marengo Counties. Brothers James Wood, Robert Wood and Henry Wood were there in the late 1820s and the 1830s. James and Robert left the area by the 1840s, but Henry may have stayed. Henry 's wife was an Elizabeth ,but we do not know her maiden name. Deed records for Henry Wood state that her name was Elizabeth. I was curious if Bennet H. Wood's middle name may have been Henry and he was the Henry Wood , I am looking for in Perry Co. or if he was related to James, Robert and Henry Wood.

Sorry I could not give you any further Reid information for your trip to Perry CO. Good luck with your research.

I am not related to this family but I do hve The Heritage of Perry County Alabama book. There is a lengthy article on James L. Flowers. Some of the names mentioned in the article are Nancy J Reed, Andrew Reid, Elizabeth A. Wood and on and on. There is a picture of James Leonard Flowers and one of Precilla Ann Wood Flowers. If you would like to send me your email address, I will be happy to scan the article and send it to you.

I grew up in Perry County but no longer live there.

Lynda

Did you all ever sort out the Elizabeth Reid Wood puzzle? I am trying to connect the Reid/Reed in Pinetucky Beat(Andrew) with my greatgreatgrandmother, Mary Reed/Reid, who was born in Georgia and married John Calhoun Jones in 1825 in Perry Co, AL. I strongly believe she was a daughter of Andrew and his first wife and that Andrew's other children included Andrew W. Reed/Reid, Samuel M. Reed/Reid, and Elizabeth, who married Bennet Wood. I'm going to be in Perry in a couple of weeks to try to sort through probate and land records, but would love having more info.

Thanks, you all, for your update. I have only two "proofs" for Reid/Reed family surmises: 1825 marriage license in Perry for Mary Reed and John Calhoun Jones, my gggrandparents; and census records from 1820 through 1870 that seem to fit; plus federal land patent records for Andrew Reed/Reid and John C. Jones. The two families lived close to or next door to each other in Perry county for years and ages in census records seem to fit with Andrew being the Pinetucky Reed patriarch and the others being his offspring. I've been searching for the marriage license for years and just discovered some wonderful people in Perry County found some unrecorded licenses, including the one I needed (bless you all!) I'll let you know if I find anything helpful in loose papers and deeds. Maryann, I'm sure you know the Perry Heritage book has a section on the Wood-Flowers family, altho it doesn't answer your query.
