I am trying to find a place called Oak Grove Plantation. You were talking about a cemetery that was on private land. Can you tell me anything about the name of this cemetery and or it's location? My ancestor John Vining b. 1786 owned Oak Grove plantation and his wife, Elvira Harris Shelton Vining is buried there. Any help with finding Oak Grove Plantation would be greatly appreciated.

My grandfather was born at Hobbs Island AL in 1893. I would like very much to find some history materials related to this timeframe. Since the 1890 census is gone I have been unable to find out his mother's name. I'm curious to know what was on Hobbs Island & what attracted people to live there. I have been unable to find any info on the net about the island that's helpful. Thanks

how are you,
i live on oak grove road near hobbs island. i am a lieutenant with the madison county sheriff's department. steger road runs east off of hwy 231/431 in the bad curve just north of the bridge in meridianville. the bridge is just north of the winn dixie at patterson lane and 231. it is my understanding that this road was named after our family. there are also 2 cemetaries in ryland with many stegers buried in them although i cant tell you just how they are related. one of them is across the road from shiloh methodist church. i caant remember exaCTLY WHERE THE OTHER IS BUT IT IS NEAR THERE ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. burns miller is one of the care takers at the shiloh cemetary and anyone at the ryland store which is within site of the cemetary can tell you how to find him. he knows where the other cemetary is. be prepared to talk awhile when you meet him, and if you are a gun hater dont bother looking him up because he is a staunch n.r.a. member. hope this helps you.

Article from the Steger Newsletter

I have an article from the Steger Newsletter, published by Bill Steger a few years back, that refers to a "mulatto boy registered on the slave schedules of Samuel Steger" that was substantiated in the 1870 census listing Marshall Steger as this child. The article goes on to name two black wives of Marshall and several children's names....one was William. The only problem - this was in Christian County, Kentucky. However, the article said Marshall traveled a lot, so......... I would be happy to send the article to you - by e-mail or mail. let me know if you would like it. The ancestor I'm searching - James Henry Steger was in Mississippi by 1860 census. I'm trying to find his father's name. Good luck in your search & let me know if you think the article would help.

Hello, I am sorry i can not help you find much about James and Sarah. I am also seeking more information about them.
As far as Steger Road. i was over there not long ago. I did not find much on the road that had anything to do with our family anymore. I do know that this road was originally named after my great great grandfather, Allen Steger. He once owned 40 acres of land there.
Most of our family settled in the Maysville, Alabama area. There are several grave stones in the Shilo Baptist Cemetary. I have a few photoes I can send to you.
The land in Maysville was first owned by Payton Steger. the family later split it all up and unfortunantly, the last living Steger in that area is unable to speek and is currently in a nursing home. Her son and family have all moved to Florida. I've not been able to locate him Yet.
Please right me for any further information.

Thank you,
Sylvia
LittleNightbear@aol.com
I will look through the pictures of gravestones I have. The Davis' and Walker's were pioneer families of the area. I applied for a beautiful certificate after proving that I descended from James Walker Sr. b. 1750?, James Walker, Jr. b. 20 March 1780, James Reed Walker b. 24 Sep 1813.

James Jr. married Mary Polly Davis (b. 29 Oct. 1788).

James Reed married Jane Davis (b. 11 Sep 1818 in Madison Co., Al). As you can see she was his cousin. All are married in Miller Cem. as are most of their children.

As I said the Walkers were pioneers of that area and I believe the original Davis was Samuel Davis.
I'm uncertain as to whether or not the Keel family has one or not, and I've done extensive research on the subject. I'm looking for the Keel family crest if it exists. I've seen a few through my research but I want to be sure I have the correct one. One would assume there would be one, to have a "Keel Mountain" in Madison county - If there isn't one, my artistic skills and research could help in creating one for my cousin, my brother and I. I suppose I could share it, but if that were the case, I'd certainly like input from other members tied into the Keel family in one way or another.
Any help would be appreciated.

It is in poor repair and definitely needs to be re-bound. all of these being the case, I'm sure I cannot borrow the book for an extended time, however, If I can get hold of it, I'm sure that scanning in the pages into a .PDF format will not be out of the question. A pain for sure but it can be done. Let me know, hit my e-mail if you are interested and I can get information from there and see what we can do.
HardwireXIII@Hotmail.com

Hey, My Father, William Dudley Shelton's Father, James T Shelton, Married Eula Norma Bostic. Her Father Ancil C. Bostic, Her Mother was Mary Jane Walker,Whose Father was James Anderson Walker. Here's Some Stuff I've Found. I Think John McDonald Shelton Is James T Shelton's Brother But I'm Not Sure, Because When I was A Boy We Went To Powderly Alabama In About Mar1958 One Night To See Aunt Ada Williams Shelton On Her Death Bed. I Seen Her Die While Everyone Was In The Room At Home With Her. She Was Married To John McDonald Shelton. I Remember Going To A Family Reunion In Madison County To Visit Where Every One Grew Up, I remember Collie Shelton And My Dad William Dudley Shelton And I Went To An Old General Store. While There In Madison County We Stopped By The Graves Of Eula And James T Shelton In Millers Cemetery I Also Went To Aunt Anna Bostic's Funeral Back In 1968, She Use To Come Down With Mary To Visit With Us. I Wish I Could Find Out More About My Dad's Side Of The Shelton Family. By The Time I Was Born My Grand Parents Had Passed Away. My Brother Has Some Old Photos Of The Shelton Side.

The Madison Cty census of 1860 clearly shows two different Robert J Williams of about the same age- one a farmer in New Hope and the other a waggoner in Huntsville (this one cannot read or write)
In 1860 one of them married Sallie Ann Sartin, daughter of George Washington Sartin and Sarah Grayson Sartin.
I believe they are then found in the 1870 census of Franklin Cty, TN with a 59 yr old Sallie Sartin (fits with Sarah Grayson Sartin) next door.
A researcher has one Robert Williams marrying Sallie Sartin then marrying Roxana Wadley in 1861 and then Mary Ezell in 1868.
I believe this is inaccurate, and that I descend from the marriage of one of the two Robert Williams and Sallie Sartin.
I can only find one Robert williams in 1850 that fits- which one is he?
I need help please!---Any information from you Madison Cty researchers Please help if you can!
Sandra Wells Wilson

Hi Barb,
About the only thing that I've found is I believe that my GGGfather Thomas L-ford was brn abt 1778/80 either in Surry/Stokes/Rutherford Co NC,and was in Warren/Marion Co TN as of 1820's,married to a Shawnee lady named Phebe/Pheobe
I also believe that he was in Madison Co AL before 1810,and in Marion Co TN abt 1812,and very possible his father also named Thomas was with him. his father I believe was a Merchant/Indian Trader in Surry Co NC abt 1760/80's.
Thomas # 2 had sons Vachel L-ford brn abt 1804 White/Smith/Jackson/Overton Co NC,and my GGfather Silas L-ford brn abt 1812 in that same area of TN. Vachel was in Dekalb Co AL abt 1831,and some of his sons went into LA,and east TX. My GGfather Silas married Mary Seitz/Sitz/Sides/
,and lived in Dekalb/Etowah Co AL abt 1850's/1890's. I believe that Vach had a son who married a Choctaw lady, nad went into AR,and OK. I do know some of my L-fords were in Angelina Co TX.

Hope this helps,
Roy
cindyandroy@harlanonline.net
chadwick011554@yahoo.com.au

Hi,
I am still searching for the military info about Glen. I deeply regret not asking my father about it before he died.
I am traveling to Neodesha Kansas and Winnfield La in hopes of finding some Phillips descendants. Glen's son, Calvin lived in Neodesho Falls from 1850 to 1885. My great grandfather James J. lived the later part of his life around Winnfied. Have you seen the Mccord Family History on the web? It has direct reference to James and Jane (Scroggs) Mccord and references to Glen with some interesting anecdotes.. Emily

Darlene,

A friend of mine had said you wrote a family story, told by Nancy Ann Gardner to another person. It was a story titled, "Lewis' Trip to New Orleans". I am a descendant of Lewis Gardner.

I would like to talk about this story. I have heard many stories about him. He is a very mysterious, interesting and notorious man.

Do you have any other stories concerning Lewis Gardner?

Best,
Corey

Robert,

You'd mentioned indices to the records. The Madison County Records Center is most helpful. Provided you have the index to the record, the center can produce copies of the record and mail them to you. I'd done this myself, on several records dating back to 1814.

Information on the center follows (from http://algenweb.us/madison/):
Available records currently include Circuit Court Records and Probate Court Records. Probate records that can be found are 1) Marriages, 1810-1927, 2) Judgments, 1810-1950, 3) Some Deeds, 4) Newspapers, 1866-Present, 5) Probate Cases, 1810-1965, 6) Land Abstracts and 7) Sheriffs Record Books.

For further information, you can contact Rhonda Larkin, Records Specialist at 256-532-2347, by email at crecords@hpl.lib.al.us, or by regular mail to 915 Monroe Street, Huntsville, AL 35801

Your query was from last year, but perhaps this information will be helpful.

John
