On the 1850 Census in Macon Co., AL under Nathan Cornford,
they have a son named Nathan D. M. Cornford (Crawford). Someone has included these Crawfords on their family-tree and has Nathan David Maxwell Crawford b. 1838. Could this be the Nathan Crawford you are looking for ? see the family trees on ancestry.

Martha,
There is a Georgia marriage for a Nathan Crawford & Elizabeth Roberts in Richmond Co., GA. May 17, 1823. Not sure it is them. I don't see a son named David for my ancestors, Nathan & Eliz. See 1850 Census Macon County, AL
under Nathan Cornford (sic). My Benjamin Franklin Crawford is listed as 14 years old. If they had a son named David, he would have been grown by 1850 & not living at home.

I truly appreciate you follow-up on the accident.

You will note that the crash site was approximately 3 miles northwest of TAAF, which would place it in Elmore County, near Tallassee. If I get a chance after New Years, I will try to get to Tallassee to check their newspaper archive. Unfortunately, the Tallassee newspaper has never been microfilmed and the owners are extremely restrictive about their files.

You would think that one or the other of the local newspapers would have picked up on the crash of a bomber in their backyard – even with government restrictions.

Note also that the crash site was very near Gael Field (not sure of that spelling), perhaps within in a mile. Gael Field was a training facility for black Artillery spotters at the same time TAAF was in operation. The Tuskegee Airmen looked down these guys on until recently when the dwindling number of surviving fighter pilots made them open their ranks to the spotters.

I am curious about your connection to this story. Are you kin to one of the airmen?

If you are ever in or near Tuskegee, please stop by to see me. I do not have the county archives open on a regular schedule (mine is a volunteer position) so I would need a day or two advance waning.

Glenn

Thanks again for the contact information. They quickly sent me a copy of the accident report from Maxwell AFB. The report only gave accident details, so I am still searching for the crews' place(s) of burial. It appears I will have to write the Veterans' Administration for that information; their burial records prior to 1997 are not available via the Internet. Not many national cemeteries have placed their records on the Internet, either.

I've scanned the report and will try to attach it to this posting. The report was reproduced from microfilm, and it appears that the original files have been discarded. After scanning, I straightened the images and cropped them to page size, as well as adjusted the contrast slightly to make the text easier to read.

Source information:
Title: Aircraft Accident and Incident Reports (Unclassified)
Air Force Saftey Agency
Beginning Date: 07-06-1944
End Date: 07-07-1944
Call Number: 200.3912-1
Reel 339, Box 344.
Accident report number 22 - GLASS, Leonard G.; BOSTEDOR, Charles E.; HENDERSON, Grady M.; BROWN, Francis R.
(NOTE - Accident numbers 500 and higher occurred outside of the US. There were several hundred reports listed for just July 6 and 7, 1944, and appear on more than one reel.)
Thank you for taking the time to look into this for me. I have found some additional information on the accident and part of the crew. The pilot was 2nd Lt. Leonard G. Glass (apparently Leonard Garth Glass from California). The co-pilot was 2nd Lt. Charles E. Bostedor, as previously mentioned, from Eaton county, Michigan. Both were student pilots with a total of 9 1/2 hours of flying time each, flying "solo" out of Maxwell Field, and assigned to the Army Air Force Eastern Training Command. They were in a B-24E bomber that crashed 3 miles from Tuskegee Air Field. They had been observed making several steep dives and turns. After leveling off and flying straight for about 2 1/2 minutes, the plane suddenly nose dived into the ground from about 5,000 feet, at 9:35 a.m. "Central War Time". Both their left and right elevator control assemblies were found 18 miles from the crash site. Investigators believed the crew had exceeded the rating of the plane in one of their dives, but did not know if the crew knew that they had done so. I wonder if the crew discovered they had control issues, and were trying to make it to the nearest field, Tuskegee, when they went down.

PFC Grady M. Henderson and PFC Francis R. Brown were flight engineers. Grady was a native of Tallapoosa county, Alabama. I have found burial listings for his grandparents and parents, including his father who died in 1943, but he does not appear to be buried there. I have heard from a relative of Leonard Glass, who has not been able to locate his grave in California. They only knew that he enlisted in late 1942 and was deceased by 1946, but was not buried with family. As mentioned previously, the marker for Charles E. Bostedor in Michigan is a private marker, so may have been a cenotaph placed there by his family. Therefore, I believe at least several of the men were buried together, somewhere. I have not found them in any of the military burial listings available on the Internet.

I will have to follow up more with Maxwell Field, and perhaps their death certificates. The final piece of the mystery now seems to be where they were buried, as at least 3 out of the 4 may not have been buried with their families.

I had a little bit of time today to look into your quest.

The Tuskegee News (a weekly newspaper, printed on Thursday) was silent on the issue. This may not be surprising in that the Government put a lid on news such as a crash during the war (about midway through?). I next went to the "Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site" office where I talked to one of the Rangers (the site is operated by the National Park Service). They had no knowledge of a crash on or approximate to that date. They showed me a list of the arimen who served at Tuskegee Army Airfield. We found none of the names you list. I do know that a light bomber unit trained at TAAF late in the war. I do not know if the list I was shown included the bomber pilots. These would have been the only planes large enough to have had a crew of four, or more, that were stationed here. I do know that one bomber (B-25, I think) crashed on take-off and took out a county bridge when it went down. I do not have a date when that crash occurred.

I was given names and a phone number of the Air Force Historical Research Service, Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL (Joe Caver, Daniel Haulman, Mark Ennels, 334-953-7648). You might want to follow up with them.

Please stay in touch, I would very much like to know if you find anything. Information that I can add to my files about TAAF.

Glenn Drummond, Macon County Archives
Four men were killed in a United States Army Air Forces accident in Macon county on 7 July 1944. All four have consecutively numbered Macon county death certificates. They are:

Charles E. Bostedor, #14153
Grady M. Henderson, #14154
Francis R. Brown Jr., #14155
Leonard G. Glass, #14156

Lt. Charles E. Bostedor was born in Eaton County, Michigan during 1923. He has a private marker, perhaps only a memorial cenotaph, with his parents at Rosehill cemetery, Eaton County, Michigan. He might actually be buried elsewhere, with a military issued marker.

I have not been able to confirm any information on the other men. One may have been a native of Alabama, one of California, and one of Massachuesetts, based on name matches from posted military enlistments.

If anyone would have additional information on the men, or details of their accident, I would appreciate hearing about it. I have not found their unit, the nature of the accident, or if they might have been buried together in a military cemetery. I am curious if there may have been survivors of the accident.

Thank you.

Glenn,
Under Alabama Land Records with name George W. Dillard, I found list of 14 purchases listed at Land Office: 5 Cahaba, purchased from Nov. 14,1833-Aug 18,1837;8 for Montgomery from Apr 1,1837-Apr 15,1837;1 for Talapoosa dist.Jul 1840. Others for George Dillard.
Were any of these inherited by George C.?

George W. married Martha Wells in Greene co, GA Jul 1822(have marriage cert). He was 68 Yrs old in 1850 Census. Too old for CivilWar.
George C.'s older brother name in 1850 census looks like F. W. Dillard. I do not know names of any siblings. Could be Columbus, Muscogee connection.

Would you be willing to communicate with me by email? I will be happy to send you mine. I am not very comfortable with this method.

"Genealogies of Virginia Families" from The Va magazine of History & Biography. Vol III,p.81 (pub. 1981) mentions grandson of Martha Wells Dillard named Alonzo A. Dillard lives at Auburn, AL. so there must be a connection.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Mary

Mary -

This is getting complicated. Wednesday I discovered a will for Francis W. Dillard who died in Muscogee County, Georgia. The will indicates that he had brothers named George C. Dillard, Lee Dillard, Alonzo Dillard, and Columbus Dillard. It further states that George C. Dillard was the Trustee for Sue Dillard and Alonzo Dillard. Furthermore, it states that he was also Trustee for Columbus Dillard and Zenora Mahone. This would lead me to believe that Sue and Zenora were sisters. Do any of these names mean anything to you ??

Further searching this morning I discovered that George C. Dillard served in the Confederate Army throughout the war. I also found that a George W. Dillard was in the Confederate Army and was hospitalized in Montgomery, Alabama in 1864. He was still in the hospital in 1865. The record does not indicate if he recovered and discharged or if he died in the hospital. His problem must have been serious for him to have remained in the hospital for at least a year. Could this be your George W. Dillard ?? I know that you say that he died in 1854 - but that could be a family legion.

I know that nothing here connects George C. with George W. unless it is the family links in the first paragraph above.

You ask about land acquisitions. I have an index to the Macon County Tract Book here at home. This is the book that records the first purchase of land either from the Creek Indians or by military warrant. The Macon County book was extracted from the State records many years ago. The only Dillard that appears in the Tract Book is Elihah Dillard. I would have to go to the book to find more details.

I also found record where George W. Dillard acqiored an inn named "Pleasant Hill House" located four miles west of Columbus on the Columbus, Auburn, LaFayette road.

For the most part the above is just trivial information at best and may not even relate to your family. I still have not found an answer to your question.

Glenn
My unproven family info says he died in 1854. I cannot find him on any census later than 1850. Son George C. is in 1860 census listed my grandmother, Mary F. (Florence) as being 4 yrs old which is correct. George C. is supposed to have died in 1871.
George W. is in named in AL Land Records with lots of property purchased from 1823-1840 listed under Land Office:
7 for Cahaba,11for Montgomery,1 for Tallapoosa Dist.,and 1 for Demopolis. Did any of these pass down to Geo. C.?
I appreciate your time and interest.
Mary

Mary - I spent the most of the day yesterday (Monday) searching the Will Books, Probate Minutes, Probate Records, and Bond Books that cover the 1850s time period. Sorry to say that I found no mention George W. Dillard or George C. Dillard. Is it possible that there is an error in your records and that George W. died at a later time? I did not get into an 1860s search because my time ran out and they were closing the courthouse. Other than a later death, I have run out of ideas.

Glenn
Thanks Glenn,
Since I wrote that message I did find Ancestry's index of their marriage. However it said 13th of March rather than 3rd and it also did not include the page number. And the name spellings varied, so I'm assuming you saw a different source than Ancestry. Where did you find that? (just so I can verify the differences)
Also, have seen Mariah as a widow in 1900 census for Tuskegee and a Richardson family that could perhaps be hers.
Hello,
I believe I have found this family in the 1900 census in Tuskegee, Macon, AL (dist 107) pg. B4 Indexed as Mana Torpley.

Maria E. Torpley b. June 1836, widowed 10 kids/7 living, (GA,GA,GA)
Mattie Russel (gdau)b. Apr 1891 AL
William M Rusel (gson) b. jun 1894 AL
Evelyn Russel (gdau) b. Mar 1896 AL
Georgia Hilton (dau) b. Apr 1877 LA
Frank Russel (boarder) b. July 1852 AL
Nellie B. Hilton (gdau) b. Mar 1897 FL

Both sons, Fletcher and William, show up in Tuskegee Dist 106.
I am curious about the Miriah Richardson claim as I've not found any info to support that. There were two James M. Tarpley married in TN, one in Coffee Co 10 june 1856 to Mary A.E. Jones, another in Franklin Co 2 Feb 1858 to Mary E.R. Hubbard. If going with the father of James M. Tarpley as James Anderson Tarpley then it would seem that Mary Hubbard is our gal since James A Tarpley remarried to Mary E. Mosley 28 Dec 1847 in Rutherford Co, TN and appear in the 1850 census Fleming, Rutherford, TN with a son John Mosley in the family. John Mosely marries in Franklin Co, TN three days after James M. marries Ms. Hubbard.
However, there are some family trees that suggest the mother of James M. Tarpley was named Margaret. There is a Margaret Tarpley enumerated in the 1850 Alabama State census in Tuskegee with 3males under 21, 1 female over 21. The 1870 and 1880 census' for James M. is consistant in stating his bp as GA and not TN.
For what it's worth.

Did you ever find George and Christina? I know there is a Oswalt Cemetery outside Tuskegee, but can't find marker listings on-line (I am looking for them also). I am related through their daughter Elizabeth.

Susan (age 16), Blanche (age 14) and John (age 4) Sizemore are listed on the 1870 Macon Co., Cross Keys Beat, Shorter's Depot. All 3 are I(ndian.) They are in HH 580. In HH 579 is Mary Young, F W, age 50 and we believe she is the grandmother of the 3 children. Does anyone have any information on Susan, Blanche or John Sizemore and their descendants? If you prefer to email me privately at esleslie@bellsouth.net rather than post here, please do so.
Evelyn S. Leslie

Robert,

Sorry to be out of touch so long. I'm getting back into it now.
I have a question. Do you have any information about Walter's 1st wife, Clara Taylor?
Here's what I have from an aunt's gen info that allegedly was researched by a pro (pre internet).

Her full name was Clara (Duck) Camilla Taylor. I have no dates at all. My aunt's notes (incorrectly, I believe) indicated she was a Grandaughter of Zachary Taylor and the sister to Jefferson Davis' first wife, Sarah Knox Taylor. Something isn't right since Sarah Knox Taylor was the daughter of Zachary Taylor.

I have searched all over and haven't been able to find any information on her.

Any help appreciated.

Tnx Fred
