I have a bona fide Alabama Mystery for you all!
My 2nd great grandmother Rachel Williams was assigned a military land patent that was warranted to someone named Tilman Leuk. This was in 1852 and they were living on this land in 1860 in Lowndes County, AL.
First of all, I have never heard of Tilman Leuk or ANY other Leuk! Second, it was illegal (wasn't it?) for married women to own land in Alabama in 1860 (the patent was assigned in 1852). Third, she was listed on the 1860 census as Head of Household, with her husband listed below her. He died in or before 1870. Who wants to help me tackle this one!? (He also owed land, but not the land they lived on.)
Here's a clue: Tilman Leuk served as an Orderly Sargent in Capt. Allen's Company, Georgia Militia in the Florida War (The Creek-Seminole uprising).
for the record, Rachel (or Rachael) was Hank Williams Great Grandmother, mother of Irvin Williams.
Thanks for any ideas or assistance!!
