I am looking for any relatives of my great grandmother. Her name was Rosie Bullard born in 1906 in Opelika, AL. She once told me that her parents names were Green Bullard (father) and Minnie Brown (mother). She said they called her grandmother Bell or Bear (unsure if this paternal or maternal grandmother). Please help me make any connections.

The 1860 census of Russell Co. AL Post Office--Watoola shows FA (Francis Americus, son of James), Ellen (third wife of James), William, DB (Daniel Brooks), and James W. (I thought this was the son of James but the ages don't match.) The 1870 shows William Daniel and Wiley back in pike Co. GA When did William come back to AL? The 1880 census of Lee co. AL shows Daniel, James and George.

Linda Story lwstory@bellsouth.net

My husband, Ben Story is also of the Daniel Brooks line. His grandfather is Uriah Lee and his father is Geoffrey Lee. I have Alva's middle name as Silas. The census records show an S as his middle initial. I have been working on this line for several years. I did not know exactly when William Jr. came to Russell/Lee Co. I have always been told that James was the first to come to Russell/Lee Co. I also do not know where he is buried. Most of the family is buried at Homewell Methodist Church Cemetery out from Opelika. There are some "lost graves" where writing has disappeared or grass has grown over. Ben and I live in Mobile. I would love to work with you some on this line. Linda Story

Has anyone seen a document (in the library??) called "Memories of Rebecca Allen Kidd"? It is cited on several online trees but all email addresses associated with those trees are no longer active. Apparently additional notes were added to this document by some folks from Lee County:

"Memories of Rebecca Allen Kidd . . . Additions by Mrs.
Schom and Dr. Wright (J.P.) of Auburn, AL"

Anyone have any ideas? The Allen family has quite a few brick walls that we have been working on for years.
Thanks!

PATE ROBINSON SIZEMORE Reunion - 05 SEP 2009 - Box Springs, GA

During the reception after my mom's memorial service at Mt. Paron Church in Box Springs, several cousins asked about holding a reunion soon, so...

We have decided to get up a meeting of the PATE, ROBINSON and SIZEMORE families on Saturday, September 5, 2009 (the upcoming Labor Day weekend), at 11 PM at the Mt. Paron Primitive Baptist Church on Box Springs Rd., just south of US Hwy. 80, in Box Springs, Talbot County, Georgia. The reunion is for the descendants of John & Martha Ann (WEATHERS) PATE and of George Washington & Rhoda (UNKNOWN) SIZEMORE - including the descendants of Burrell H. ROBINSON and his two wives, Ferlinia (SIZEMORE) ROBINSON and Gerina (SIZEMORE MOORE) ROBINSON – however, all interested parties are invited and welcome. A number of families related to the above migrated to Phenix City, particularly during the expansion of the Ft. Benning military reservation in the World War II era.

Also, the recently formed Mt. Paron Primtive Baptist Cemetery Association will meet the same day, Saturday, September 5, 2009, at 4 PM at the church. All interested parties are encouraged to attend and voice their opinion as we discuss the current and future upkeep and improvement of the cemetery property.

For more information on the above reunion and cemetery association meeting, contact Barbara SIZEMORE at 706.269.3991 or John LAND at 469.995.5222.

I am told there will also be a reunion of folk related to the above families at Mt. Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church in Sylvester, Worth County, Georgia, on Sunday, September 6. I don't have any further information on that, except that I believe Harold SIZEMORE of Cusseta, Georgia, is coordinating that event.

I look forward to seeing everyone soon! - John in TX
The graveside memorial service at Mt. Paron Primitive Baptist Cemetery will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 26, officiated by Nadine LAND's nephew, Louie F. GIGLIO, III. The service will actually be held inside the church (air conditioning and places to sit!). To reach Box Springs, take US Hwy. 80 east from Columbus. Not far past the Talbot County line, at Box Springs Road (note: you will come to a Box Springs cut-off first - this is not the place!), turn right and go south. The cemetery and church are almost immediately on your left.

One correction: Martha Jeane (Mrs. Louie F.) GIGLIO, Jr. presently resides at Alpharetta, GA, rather than Marietta. Thanks to all for your kind condolences. - jml

Washington surname mystery

We are looking for information on our Alabama/Georgia Washington family ancestry. Please help solve our old family mystery!

Our oldest known paternal ancestor was George Washington, no middle initial, who was first found in 1840 census at Girard [now Phenix city], Russell, Alabama, at the age of 19 - just across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, Georgia. Former and merged names of Girard include: Browneville, Knights Station, Lively and Phoenix City.

Living next door was John C. Alford Halford b. 1787 NC.

Info on George Washington's headstone in Sarepta, Calhoun, Mississippi, reads: "Sacred to the memory of George Washington, Born in VA 1821, Died 1869," however, we cannot find anything concrete that takes us back to VA. However, examining the 1850 census it says George was born in Alabama. His children, James Hiram and George, in the 1910 census both say their father was born in Alabama. Son John C. stated in the 1880 MS census that his father was born in Georgia, says in the 1900 MS census that Alabama is the birthplace of his father.

George was first married to Jincy Halford according to Mississippi death certificate of #2 son John C Washington. Search on Jincy results in nothing and am inclined to believe Jincy was a nickname.

George and first wife Jincy resulted in 3 children:

Francis Marion abt. 1839 AL d. 22 Apr 1862 Corinth, MS 18th AL Infantry Co. I, m. Louisa Archer daugh. of John Samuel Archer and Rosa E. BERRY of Shelby co;
John C. b. 30 Dec. 1840 AL d. 14 Feb. 1917 MS, 31st MS Inf. Co. D m. Margaret A Lewellen; and
Catharine b. Bet. 1841-1844 d. Bet. 1841-1844.

Family story is that wife Jincy died in childbirth.

Next George took a land purchase trip to Mississippi with father-in-law John C. Halford in 1841 as follows:
George Washington 27 Feb 1841 17 NESE CHOCTAW 12N 16E (Kemper co. MS),
John C Halford 05 Jan 1841 1 E½NE CHOCTAW No 2N 12E 26 (Jasper co MS).

George then m2 Mary Ann McEwen Jan. 1845 in Muskogee co, Georgia. The family was next found in Wetumpka, Coosa, Alabama in 1850 census. Also in the Wetumpka, Coosa, AL census next door to each other were John C. Halford and Catharine (Jincy's parents?) and Kirkham McEwen & Mary Canada(Mary's parents) - both father-in-laws old justices of the peace. Also listed in the Halford hh was Amanda Conaway who married Joseph Hinton Williams 17 Nov 1850.

Children of George Washington and Mary McEwen were:
Mary Ann m. James E. Lewellen no children
James Hirum Kirkham m. Sarah Adilene Hitchcock
Elizabeth (Lizzie) m. James H. Caldwell
Lucy Ann m1. Wm. Gathright Murphy m2. Millisee Moss
George m1. Mattie Gillespie m2. Gulania Boatsman
Joseph Perry m. Josephine O. Murphy

Searching through both father-in-laws I was able to fill in many blanks, but not the ancestry of George Washington.

I next found George made land purchase witnessed by brother-in-law Francis Marion McEwen in Elmore County (Coosa), AL 18 Jan 1856 (BLM Land Record #13576) SWNE NWSE Sec 2 20 17 with dwelling, corn crib and stable 119 acres.

I recently found George Washington listed in Choctaw Living in the Chickasaw District annuity rolls for union/pontotoc cos. MS between 1857-1860. Family story was we purchased land from Indians and were first white settlers in south Pontotoc county near Chickasaw county line, now known as Washington community.

The family arrived in Mississippi sometime before the death of John Halford's wife Catharine Brown in Feb 1859 in Sarepta. I found George's son John C Washington along with new bride Margaret listed in 1860 census at Sarepta, Calhoun, MS in the John C. Halford [Holford] household.

We are not certain when John C Halford b. 1787 NC died or where he is buried. His wife Catharine Brown b. 13 Jan 1795 SC d. 01 Feb 1859 burial Methodist Campground-Ragland cemetery in Sarepta. She was daugh. of James Brown abt. 1770 SC d. 09 Nov 1820 and Elizabeth of Warren county MS, formerly of SC. The will of James Brown lists daugh. Catharine Halford. Siblings of Catharine Brown were: Jeremiah, Jacob, Jane, Nancy, Elizabeth and Benjamin.

Apparently John C Halford was justice of the peace in Simpson county MS bet. 1823-1826. His father was John b. 1765 Pasquotank, Albemarle County, NC d. 1803 Rutherford, Albemarle County, NC. Mother was Nancy Dalton b. Bet. 1766 - 1768 Albemarle County, VA d. 1804 Rutherford County, NC.
Through research I find the Dalton's go back to the John Dandridge family b. 29 Apr 1655 Great Malvern, Wrcstr, England. So the descendants of George Washington and first wife Jincy Halford are blood related to the Dandridge and Washington families! But which Washington family?

Kirkham McEwen is a well documented justice of the peace moving to Alabama from GA in 1836 where they settled on the Tallapoosa River in Tallapoosa Co. ALA, about 14-miles south of Dadeville.

HINTS:
There was another Washington already residing in Pontotoc county Mississippi prior to our families arrival. His name was John Washington b. 1806 SC and was living in the James and William CHRISTIAN household in Washington community, Pontotoc co., MS. John Washington's daughters were: Martha b 1834 AL, Mary b. 1837 AL and Susan b. 1844 AL. What became of this John Washington and was he a relative?

Was Joseph H Williams who married Amanda Conaway in 1850 Coosa co AL a relative?

George's descendants participated in YDNA testing and are haplotype R1b1b2e and go back in time from N. Ireland to Scotland, to England & British Isles to south France and beyond matching to Niall of the Nine Hostages.

Significant multiple YDNA test matches at:
*37 marker level
WILLIAMS, MCTERNAN, MCTIERNAN, FERGUSON(TRUMBLE),FITZHENRY, HEARL
*25 marker level
CHRISTIAN, MCGEE, MCKEE, MCGEHEE, ALEXANDER, MCTERNAN, MACTIERNAN, MCTIERNAN, FERGUSON, DAUGHERTY, Williams, WALKER, DOHERTY, HARRISON, BOICE, MCGREW, HEARL, MCDONALD, LAW

Please help solve our family mystery!

Terrie

John D. Baker, 1888-1976

Looking for information on the family/ancestors of John D. Baker, b. Feb 1888, Camden, Tennessee, died 19 Feb 1976 in Opelika, Alabama. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He married Mammie E. and had the following children: William O., Erline, Bertie, Helen, Ernest, Chester, and Hazel, according to the 1930 census. J.D. Baker had one brother, Homer, and a half brother, Wylie Britt Stanley. Homer and Britt changed their names to Stanley early in the 1900s. I am descended from Britt Stanley and I'm trying to find out why the name was changed.

According to his obituary, all of his children were still living, and his daughters had all married, although I can't tell whom married whom. They married: John Windsor of Tallahassee, Florida; Roy Walker of Homestead, Florida; Bill Capps of Opelika, Alabama; and the last daughter, Mrs. Gladys Nowell of Camden, Tennessee.

If anyone can help me contact any of these people, or knows of this family, please help me get in touch. Thanks.

Hi, James. It's good to meet you. I have almost nothing on the Bean family. For a while I thought perhaps it was the same Bean that owned the fort where Thomas P. Hasty occupied the house in 1830's. I confused Bean's Mill with Floyd's Mill.
Notes:
***********************************************************
Fragment of manuscript, Rev. Cherry's Notebook of Lee County, Alabama, Folder 6, Notebook V, page 50. "In 1839 Mr. Floyd built a comfortable residence in the center of where this fort stood. The house is still standing and is now occupied by Mr. Thomas P. Hasty." Undated fragment. Extracted by Martha E. Durham, Montgomery, AL.
******************************************************
But then I learned from the historian that this was the wrong Bean family.

This is what I have. When I didn't have a first name, I put the sex...Daughter or Son. You may want to print this.

Descendants of Thomas Alford Bean

1 Thomas Alford Bean	b: September 13, 1841 in Newnan, Coweta Co., GA d: October 30, 1925 in Bean's Mill, Lee Co., AL
.. +Mary	b: Abt. 1842 in AL	m: Bef. 1868 in AL	d: Bef. 1900 in GA
........	2 George W.
Hi,
I was equally as excited when I received your e-mail, thinking I'd finally found a trace of my Hettie Harper. Unfortunately. it seems we are looking for different people. My great grandmother was born about 1858, and was married to a Bunk Brown. In our Harper family there is a Hattie Brown who was born about 1881 and married a Johnnie Bryant. Have no information about a SANDS.

Thanks for your reply and good luck on finding yor great grandmother.

So excited forgot to give email...
Idaho1417@gmail.com I have information on Frank's sister Ina, very little on Rufus, did get a copy of his Death Certificate, his was two daughters and they are both deceased, one never married, one did, but don't find any children for her. Bessie's grandson filled me in on some info for her, but Frank has eluded me. Could not find him in the 1930 census. Anyway, please let me know how much info you have, and if I can help in any way. I have no pictures of Asa, but do have one of his wife, Mary Thornhill Sanders. Do you have any of Dempsey or Mattie, or the children? Here I go, off on an excited rant, so sorry. Love this genealogy stuff, and really enjoy corresponding with cousins.

Obituary lookup for MAY and WISEMAN

I'm working on my Craig family line. I have 2 relatives--2 sisters that died in Opelika, Lee, Alabama. Can someone assist me with locating an obituary for them? The oldest was Irene Barbara (Craig) May, died 26 Nov 1996. The younger one was Ethel (Craig) Wiseman, died in April 1986. I have emailed the local library there to see if they have someone who will do the lookup. But I'm not sure if they will have someone doing that or not. Is there anyone here that might be able to assist me?

After extensive research, I found that his name was James
and not John. He was born 09/22/1869 in Lee County, AL, and died 09/11/1961 in Miami, FL. He was married twice and had 7 children--one died at birth. In the 1900 census, he lived in Salem, AL;in 1910, he lived in Bullock County, AL; and in the 1920 and 1930 census, he lived in Thomas County, GA.
Sometime after that, he and his family moved to California.
Later, he moved to Miami 'alone' where his son and two
of his daughters lived. The last 3 years of his life, he lived in Airways Conv. Home. He is buried in the Woodlawn Park Cemetery in the Miami area. I hope this information will help others who are researching the James M. and Nancy Carmack Whitman family.

NEWSOM / NEWSOME Family Reunion in Columbus area

This announcement is directed to descendants and families of James & Elizabeth (NEWSOM) NEWSOM who married 1816 in Warren Co, GA, and were in Marion Co, GA, in 1830; Harris Co, GA, in 1840, and Musocgee Co, GA, 1850; as well as any other persons who are researching this branch of the family. We are planning two events that you may be interested in participating in, and perhaps even in helping to plan:

1) We will be holding a NEWSOME family info and photo swap-meet on the same weekend as the Golden Acres NEWSOME Family Reunion in Phenix City, AL, which is held the first Saturday in August (this year it's August 2, 2008). The time and place for the swap-meet are yet to be establshed - probably in the afternoon / evening of Saturday, August 2. Several local NEWSOME cousins have already expressed an interest in attending, and we hope to have representatives from as many of the NEWSOME children as possible. Already included on the contact list are descendants of brothers John NEWSOME, William Anderson NEWSOME, James NEWSOME, Henry M. NEWSOME, and George Washington Freeman NEWSOME, and sister Elizabeth (NEWSOME) BELCHER - and possibly brother Carter NEWSOME.

2) An NEWSOME Family Reunion, to be held in the Spring of 2009 in the Columbus-Phenix City area. This will include ALL of the descendants (with spouses and families) of James & Elizabeth (NEWSOM) NEWSOM, who married 1816 in Warren Co, GA; were in Marion Co, GA, in 1830; in Harris Co, GA, in 1840; and the widow and children being at Clapp's Factory in Muscogee Co, GA, by 1850. While we will welcome descendants on collateral lines (STATHAM, MORRIS, PIKE, ABNEY, PAGE, etc.) and NEWSOMES from other branches as well - we espeically want to get the word out to as many direct-line descendants of James & Elizabeth as we can.

The timing of the All-NEWSOME Reunion will probably coincide with the United Daughters of the Confederacy ceremony to dedicate the new military grave markers of our NEWSOME kin and others at the Clapp's Factory Cemetery - this ceremony is tentatively scheduled for March 2009. We are working on applications for VA-provided markers for Carter NEWSOME (1818-1896), John NEWSOME (b. 1820), Asa NEWSOME (b. 1823), William Anderson NEWSOME (b. 1826), and James NEWSOME (1834-1894) - we have service records for all these men and know Carter, John, and James are buried at Clapp's Factory; we suspect Asa and William Anderson are as well.

We are also looking for candidates to participate in the NEWSOME surname DNA study project as well - perhaps you know of a male with the surname NEWSOME in your branch who would be willing to participate?

Please let me know if you would be interested in participating in one or both of these events and fill me in on if you've learned anything new lately about your NEWSOME ancestry. I look forward to hearing from each of you! Thanks!

Cousin John in TX

John Mallory Land
10118 Timber Trail Dr.
Dallas, TX 75229-6023
469.995.5222
retrofit@flash.net

Hello!!!

I am "getting goosebumps" after reading your query today! Could it possibly be the same Hattie/Hettie Harper linking us????

My Maternal Great Grandmother is HATTIE HARPER SANDS. She was mulatto; born in Opelika Alabama aprox. 1860! In the 1880 Census she was married to JACK SANDS (African American) and they lived in the county adjacent to Opelika/Auburn. But I know NOTHING as to Hattie's siblngs etc.; on her death certificate her father's name is listed as John Harper and as near as I can make out mother's first name is "Ann"? I do have other information to share including a Photo of Hattie Harper, let us pray they are one and the same person!!

Please email me as soon as possible to see if we have the same Great Grandmother, surely there couldn't be this many coincidences if we weren't!!!!

cherylvandaalen@hotmail.com

Take care,
Cheryl in Louisville, Ky

(p.s. We just made a brief visit to Opelika, Ala....the first time anyone in our family has set foot in Opelika/Ala. since they left the area about 1903!!)

I am searching for the burial place of Cordelia Truett Smith. She was born around 1860 and died in 1882. She is in the 1880 Census in Lee County, Wacoochie Valley area.

She was married to James Travis Smith and had three sons. James Homer, born 1878, John Parker, born 1880, and Dely Rowland born 1882. She died 6 days after Dely was born and her mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. J P Goodwin raised Dely as their own. He even took their last name of Goodwin.

I am not sure where they lived when she died but if anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Dr. James M Allen and wife Eleanor, Loachapoka, AL 1869

Have found a recorded deed in Opelika, James M and Eleanor sold 6 acres west of their home, Lee Co, Section 26, Township 19, Range 24 to William Campbell. Seems this would be pretty close to a Baptist church that sits directly west of Loachapoka at present time. Does anyone have any ideas? Other than the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses, we find no real record of this family. Dr. Allen died prior to 1880; an earlier wife, Caroline Bufford (sp), had died prior to his marrying Eleanor G Williams in 1867. We know that Eleanor died in Atlanta in 1896. I need to find proof of Dr. Allen's parents whom I believe to be James and Elizabeth Allen from SC, sister Carrie, brothers Robert and George per 1860 census, Macon Co. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am researching (for my dissertation) churches that were organized prior to the Civil War and African American churches that were organized immediately after the Civil War. Please contact me if you have any narrative histories or lists of members.

William Brunson Watson

I am trying to locate when my Uncle William Brunson Watson died and where buried. He was born in Randolph County, GA on 12/03/1880 and died sometime between 1930/40. He was married to Belle (?) Watson circa 1906/07. They had two daughters, Avanelle born 1908 and Lois born 1910. Avanelle married and had two children, but Lois never married and was in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII. My uncle worked in the Cotton Mills in Pepperell so I have been told. Any help will be sincerely appreciated.
