I am looking for information on Grover Cleveland BOTSFORD who is my Great Grandfather, and according to my Grandmother's birth certificate lived at Rt 1 Auburn in 1932. Grover's wife was Effie WHITE. My grandmother, Thelma Lee BOTSFORD, was born on 7 July 1932. Her birth certificate states the age at last birthday for Grover was 44 and for Effie was 31. It also states that Grover was born in Tallassee, Elmore County and Effie in Macon County.
This is where it get tricky, on the birth certificate Grover is listed as G. C. BADFORD. I know his name is Grover Cleveland from my Grandmother's marriage certificate, where the name is spelled Grover Cleveland BATSFORD. Also according to the social security administration the spelling is BOTSFORD. And BOTSFORD is what is thought by all to be the correct spelling.
The family tale is that Grover killed a man (don't know what year, nor the man's name, nor the city or county where it happened) and Grover was sent to prison. We're sure it was an Alabama prison, but don't know the name or location. Grover had a son and a daughter, and in the 1930 census I found Grover's wife and son, but Grover wasn't there. So I am thinking he may have been in prison at that time. Possibly there was a "visit" between Grover and Effie and that's how my grandmother came about in 1932 or maybe he got out. The son was born in 1928 and he may have been in prison then too and there was a "visit" between Effie and Grover or possibly he wasn't in prison then.
This is where I'm lost, I would of course like to know if the story is true but I would also like some clues to help me find birth, marriage, and death records for him.
The only other counties I can relate Grover to is Macon County, because that's where Effie was born, Lee County because my grandmother was born there, and Elmore or Tallapoosa County because Grover himself was born in Tallassee which as that time may have been Elmore or Tallapoosa.
I would greatly appreciate ANY help what-so-ever. Thank you in advance and please email me with any question I may be able to help you with, and any findings. I can also give you my mailing address for copies of documents.
