Rootsweb sponsors DNA testing for many surnames, including Stephens, Stevens, Stephenson, and Stevenson, also a few alternate spellings such as Stevins, Stevans, Stephins, etc.
I am recruiting male Stephens et al people living now to join this project; if you don't have a male in your Stephens family but you have a brother, uncle, or cousin of the same line, try to get them tested. Why? We are actively trying to sort out the Stephens lines who came through TN (early 1800s) and from there to Dade, Jackson, or DeKalb, AL specifically. Thomas Granser/Granville Stephens, a brother to Mashack Stephens (md Milly Farrer/Forer), is thought to have had descendants in Jackson County. Shadrack, son of Mashack, b. 1810 was in Jackson, think he died there in 1868.
I am from the line that came from mid TN (b. 1820) moved to Dade Co., GA and was there for 1840-1850 (relocated to MO for about 6 years abt 1851-1857)-1860-1870 census, may have been in Jackson a few years then moved to DeKalb, AL by 1880 census. John Doc (Dr, Doctor) Stephens-b. 1817-1823 in TN md Sarah Jane Holland >George Washington Stephens b. 1846 in GA>Walter Washington Stephens, Sr. b. 1877 in Fort Payne, DeKalb, AL>Harley Green Stephens b. 1924 in Fort Payne, AL>Lana Stephens b. 1944 in Gadsden, Etowah, AL (nearest hospital).
We have people on standby who will pay for the DNA testing for those who can't afford it. Just let me know. For this project, we need to test a direct line male Stephens et al only. I hope many of you will join the project at
