Delilah J. Hutto was the daughter of David and Jane Eliza Galloway Hutto. David Hutto had three wives, Eliza Galloway, Sarah J. Miller, and Joanna N. Gassett.

Dilla was first married to William A. Watson. W. A. Watson was killed on 28 Aug 1862 at the second battle of Manassas. He was a Corporal in Co 'G' commanded by Capt. W. C. Oates, Trimble's Brigade, 15th AL infantry commanded by Col. James Canty, Ewell's Division. Dilla J. Watson requested that correspondence be directed to David Hutto (her father), at Abbeville, Henry Co., AL.

Dilla's second husband was Samuel J. Clenney.

William's brother, James Thomas Watson served in the same company. He was married to Sarah A. D. Hutto, a cousin of Dilla. He died of typhoid fever. His widow states they were married on or about the 2nd day of January, 1860. He died 28 July at Haymarket, Va. Her father, John W. Hutto, provided an affadavit.

I have copies of the service records of William and James T. Watson if you need them.

Searching for a son of William Henry Hunt, b. 24 Jun 1870-d.1938

I am a Daniel Jackson Hunt descendant and am looking for a descendant of his son, William "Will" Henry Hunt who was b. 24 Jun 1870 and d. 28 Oct 1938 in Dothan, GA. He married Addie Hearn and may have been married twice. At that time the obituary listed a son named William Henry Hunt, Jr. who was living in Abbeville, AL and had five children. So far I've turned up nothing on my man. Daniel Jackson Hunt was married to Frances "Fannie" A. Denson who after Daniel's death married a William Chapelle who first married Amanda Denson, Fannie's sister. The Hunts were in Henry County, AL very early and there were several. Please contact me at Fallonfox@aol.com

I have found the family in Henry Co., AL in 1850. I cannot find them in any record since. I do find a Sovereign Watson in Co 'B' 6th AL regiment who died Feb 24, 1863 of hepatitis in the hospital at Lynchburg, Va. This may be the same Sovereign Watson.

There is a Jane Watson in the 1866 state census in Barbour Co., AL whose husband died of disease during the war. She has 4 young girls and 3 sons. Without the 1860 census record it is not possible to know if she is the widow of Sovereign.

I have been unable to find Thomas or John in a later census.
There was a Jacob K. Hutto mentioned in E. Howard Hayes' book "Miscellaneous records, Dale County, Alabama" in a section of writings from W. E. Mathews. He tells of a Francis MArshall who lay near death about 1851 and joined the church and promised to quit selling whiskey if he is allowed to live. Jacob K. Hutto is named as one of the people who destroyed his stock of whiskey.

Mathews also lists some old settlers including Jacob K. Hutto who had a son named Howell. He shows a Nicholus Hutto from SC with sons Rufus, Henry, and James. I think I can provide copies of the pages.

There is also a Jacob K. Hutto in Henry County who is my ancestor. He is from Orangeburg Co., SC and it appears he may have lived in Laurens Co., Ga. He was married to Louise Oliver and to Anna Horne. The family is not found in 1850. Anna is in Henry Co. from 1860 to 1880.

There is a good history of the Hutto family at http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~pmullins/chapter01.htm#Arrivalofth...

I also took pictures of the graves at the Hutto Cemetery a couple of years ago and posted them on www.findagrave.com

There were many graves marked with field stones and some unreadable. Pictures of the headstones are on the findagrave site.

There is another Thomas Family in and around Henry Co. I have put some information together about them. Could you help with what I have found?

William Franklin (Frank) Thomas

Frank Thomas was born March 1847/1851 in Georgia. He married first Frances (Fannie) maybe Miller about 1874. She was born 1844 in Alabama and had a daughter named Lilee Miller born 1860 Alabama. Frank died around 1925/30 and is buried at Campspring, Columbia, Houston Co., AL.
Frank and Fannie had four children named in the 1880 census. They were daughters: Emma Lake, born 1873 in Eufaula, Barbour, Alabama, Bula, born 1875 Alabama, Willie A. born 1877 Alabama and a son that wasn’t named in census. He was Oscar Franklin Thomas born 1880 in Alabama. Emma married William Edward “Willie” Farmer , 5 Sept 1893. Oscar married Nellie ReJames Keel born 1882 in about 1899. In the 1900 census they were living in Henry County, AL.
Frank married second an unknown wife abt. 1894 but had a son named Clarence born 1895 in Alabama. In the 1900 census he was 8 years old and living with Oscar and Nellie Thomas.
Frank married in 1895 Cornelia Virginia Hopkins born 5 September 1871 in Georgia. She died September 1934 in Pensacola, Florida. They had five children: Vesta Albert born Apr 1896 in Fort Gaines, Clay Co., Georgia died May 1958 Ocala, FL, Otho Applin, born 30 Oct 1897 in Fort Gaines and died 23 Feb 1969 in Dothan, Houston, Co., Al, Jesse Eudon, born 16 Aug 1899 in Fort Gaines, and daughters Vera Ellen born 27 Jan 1901 in Headland, Henry Co., Al, Dutcholine born 26 Feb 1905 in Headland. Vesta married Mabel Peake about 1920. Otho information given when he died gave his parent as William Franklin Thomas and Neeley Douglas. I don’t think Neeley was his mother but she could be Clarence’s mother?
Frank married in about 1905 Sinie Louise Petterson born 1884 in Alabama and may have died around 1934 in Columbia, Houston Co., Alabama. She might have committed suicide by jumping into a well. In the 1910 census they had three children: William A. born 1906, Frank T. born 1909 and daughter Edith born 1907. Clarence was living with them in 1910.
Frank may have been married five times and twice to Frances. Other children of Frank could be: James Roach, Beachem, Wilson, Katie Lee, Allie Mae, Earl, Ellie M. and Daizy Bell.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Louise Thomas

Mr. Jackson, I am thrilled to see your post. To ensure we are discussing the same Pearl Mathis, I'll tell you what I know of her. I've a friend, Debbie, who grew up in Tumbleton near Headland, Alabama. When Debbie was a child, Ms. Mathis lived across the road from her. As Debbie says now, she didn't realize at the time what a large part of her life Ms. Mathis was. When Debbie married and moved away in the 1980s, Ms. Mathis was still a neighbor. Debbie was in Germany with her soldier husband when Ms. Mathis passed away. Since her mother passed away 2 or 3 years ago, Debbie has apparently spent a lot of time reflecting on (and missing) the innocent times of her childhood. She thought of Ms. Mathis a few months ago and asked me to help find where she was buried so that she could place flowers upon her grave. Debbie knew that Ms. Mathis moved in with a relative somewhat near Stringer St. school in Dothan after she became ill. Through www.ancestry.com, I found the month and year of her death, and searched January and February 1987 in the Dothan Eagle, but no obituary was printed. Debbie's sister thought the funeral was handled by the former Levite Mortuary, which has been closed for years. So...I've pretty much struck out.

If you will, send your phone number and I will call you.

Thank you!

Darren Peterson

Does any one have a copy of Sands Stanley Will who died in Henry county in 1828. I've seen it mentioned in a couple posts from several years ago.

I would like to get a list of all the heirs mentioned in this will if possible. In the posts, James is mentioned.

I have information on two sisters, Mary Ann (1820-1891) & Sarah (abt. 1825-abt. 1870) Stanley that are named in a Jones-Kaigler Family Bible. I suspect they may be the daughters of Sands & Sarah Stanley. Mary Ann Stanley married John Jones & Sarah Stanley married Hezekiah Wingate.

Thanks so much!
Sharon
Parasby Quattlebaum was born in Henry County 1833 and died there 24 Aug 1913 and was buried at Tolbert Cemetery as Parasby Hodges.
In 1860 she married Guilford Cutchens who died in 1864. Sometime after that she married a Hodges, looking for anyone who might be able to tell me which one.
Thanks
Brian

News Update from Pre-1830 Henry County Pioneers Website

Since my August 2nd news update on the Pre-1830 Henry County, Alabama Pioneers website:

++ Four additional articles pertaining to pre-1830 Henry County pioneers were discovered in 1873 editions of "The Henry County Register" and transcribed. Two articles are "Early Recollections" from Old Settlers; one is pre-1830 pioneer Alexander James McAllister's obituary; and one is a letter from pre-1830 pioneer James Murphy. The Alexander James McAllister and James Murphy articles have already been added to the website, and the "Early Recollections" articles are attached to the Henry County History page and will soon be included on the History page.

++ The 1818 Conecuh County tax list was researched for pre-1830 Henry County pioneers and factoids were added to a few pioneer webpages.

++ Factoids were added to the webpages of several pioneers who fought in Captain Robert Irvin's Georgia company in the First Seminole War (1817-1818). Effort is ongoing to identify additional pre-1830 Henry County pioneers who fought in Robert Irvin's company.

++ The 1789-1832 Records of Appointment of Postmasters were researched for pre-1830 Henry County pioneers and a few additional pioneers and several factoids added to the website.

++ Several additional pre-1830 pioneers and factoids were added to the website from Henry County Orphans Court Record Book C. This effort will continue for several more weeks.

++ The wiki/website now has 52 members (up 13 from August). Since it was unveiled to the world on March 7, 2009, the website has had 3,919 visits and 43,231 page views.

Come visit us at http://henrycountyalabama.wetpaint.com/

Jim Chumney
This is what I understand is happening. This is a Hacker/Phisher who is only using the list addresses, possibly on specific email addresses, the look like it is coming from the list when in actuality it is bypassing the list but he/IT forgot about the format the list uses when it forwards replies to a query. Just be aware this is happening and DO NOT CLICK ON THE PROVIDED LINKS as they will take you somewhere you do not want to be and try to get information from you.

BB

I am looing for information on a William Herring who died in Barbour County around 1830 He had a brother (or close relative) Grady Herring. As executor for William's will Grady was ordered to orphons court in Barbour County in the matter of Dicy Benton, infant daughter of mary Benton. It appears that William was the father and payments were made to the court each year through a guardian, Daniel McKenzie, to Dicy until she married Michael Floyd in 1855. Could these Herrings be related to yours?
Thanks
Janie

I believe that Dorcas Skinner Mozingo married only twice. First to Jonathan Mozingo and then to James Thurell. The marriage to Thurell was 27 Apr 1845 in Henry Co., Al.
Dorcas' daughters as I have them are: Mary J. b. 7 Feb 1825 d. 8 Oct 1912, Martha A. b. 25 Sep 1827 d. 28 Jan 1913, Elizabeth b. abt 1830 d. July 1850, Sally b. abt 1832 d.?, Eliza A. b. abt 1835 d. aft 1880, Mariah b. abt 1836 d. 4 Dec 1901. Some of the dates are guesses using census records.

I ordered copies from Henry Co., Alabama Courthouse. This is the exact names on the marriages and dates. James W. Parish and Mary Marengo married on the 3rd January 1844 in Henry Co., Al. Marriage book 1844-1868 pg 92. I've looked all over for the name of Marengo, couldn't find it, finally found post that linked her sister to Isham Snell as his wife. Both sisters are buried next to each other in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery north of Pansey, Al.
John Parish and Nancy Baxter married on 5th of May 1867 in Henry Co., Al. Marriage book 1822-1867 page 588,
The names I gave you on previous post is their exact names.
Can you give me a correct list of the daughters of Dorcas Skinner Mozingo and did you ever find her second marriage to a Ferrell? I couldn't find it.
Thanks, P Trotter

Vicky,

I am Louis Chitty of Columbia, SC. I know everybody you mention except your mother, Helen. I'll be waiting to hear from you.

Your Cousin,
Louis Chitty

chitty Name Meaning and History
English: nickname from Middle English chitte ‘pup’, ‘cub’, ‘young (of an animal)’ (apparently related to Old English ci{dh} ‘shoot’, ‘sprout’).
English: habitational name from a place named Chitty in the parish of Chislet, Kent, named from an Old English personal name Citta + eg ‘island’, ‘dry ground in marsh’.
Possibly an Americanized form of German Schütte (see Schutte).
BENNETT, CHITTY, GRACE, HARVEY
Replies: 40
Re: CHITTY-black/slaves of H. In addition, my grandfather also had a sister name Gertie Beck. My grandfather, Eulie married Pearline Robinson they had 5 Children. Junell, Elizabeth, Calvin, Willie Mae, and the fith child died as a baby.
Hello Cousin Jasmin!

Fred Chitty is also my cousin. Fred, Jr., lives in Beacon, New York. His father lived in Columbia and Atlanta. I'm not sure where Fred Sr. was from, but it may be around Ridgeland, SC. I may be wrong, but my father, Jakie (aka Jake [erroneous]) is from barnwell, SC -- and may be the "Jacob" to whom you refer. His father (Jakie's father) was Belton Chitty, Sr -- and Belton Sr's Father was Hamp(ton) Chitty, of Barnwell,SC. As far as I know, my father had one brother, David Chitty, who was in the US Army during the 40's or 50's. He lived in Jacksonville, FLA when he seems to have disappeared. Then, there is also my father's sister, my aunt Gladys (who later married a man named Barber, of New York. My father's mother (my grandmother) was Anna Hogue, and her mother (my great-grandmother), who died in 1956 at age 102 or 103 in 1956, was Katie (Katy?) Patterson, nee Washington or vice-versa.

The Chitty side of my family is mainly from the Barnwell, Blackville, Williston area and surrounds.

I also have a photo of a (german-looking) gentleman whom I suspect to be a relative, who looks white and may have been from Iowa. I also have information on Jeffersons and others who may be Chitty relatives. It's too much to try to type, but get back to me and we can talk more.

Cousin Louis Chitty

PS: My brother, Jakie Jr,. lived in Burlington Rownship for more than 40 years. His family is still there and in Trenton.
