I continue to research the Corbitt Family in north Henry County –specifically around the old Lawrenceville area. The family was in the Lawrenceville area from the late 1830’s until sometime between 1890 and 1900. By the end of the 1800’s most had either died or moved to Barbour County (Eufaula) or to Geneva County (Hartford).

Specifically, I am looking for any information on the following:

Also, there is a SAMUEL Corbitt with a land patent near Jesse Wesley Corbitt in the late 1830’s. Does anyone know anything about this Corbitt? The only Samuel I have would have been too young to obtain land during this time. I am trying to determine if this Samuel Corbitt is related to my ancestors.

I am descended from the Corbetts who stayed in South Carolina. Could you possibly tell me why the spelling of the name was changed by those who moved to Alabama

Your ancestor may be connected to Lovett Samuel Corbitt who married the sister of my third great grandmother. He was born about 1807 in South Carolina. He too died in Lawrenceville 20 July 1860. He married Martha Louise Wilson, the daughter of Elias Wilson, in South Carolina and they all migrated with her family to Henry County about 1838. There are many similarities in the names of your man's children and those of Lovett Samuel. Let me know if you would like to exchange information.
