County line changes for Greene/Pickens counties?

I read the following on the usgenweb Green Co., AL site:
"Mantua was part of Pickens County in the 1840’s when residents of six and one-half townships petitioned the State Legislature to become part of Greene County."

Which townships became part of Greene County? And did any of Greene County townships become part of Pickens at some point?

My ancestors purchased land in T24 (now considered part of Greene) but were residents of Pickens in the land patent documents. Two of them appear in the 1830 and 1840 Pickens census, but another appears later in the Greene Co. census though he is living on the same land (T24, S33).

Any help is appreciated.

Adeline Whelan - born abt 1844

Adeline was born in AL, married in 1859 in Greene Co. to Joseph Atkins. Her father came from Ireland. I believe Adeline was the daughter of Charles and Adeline T. Whelan. Charles, from Ireland, was a person of note in Greensboro in 1860, and appears in numerous places on census, etc. But I cannot connect Adeline to him. However, the first son of Joseph and Adeline was named Charles, and that name doesn't appear in the Atkins side of the line. Can anyone help me in solving this riddle?

Death of W.T. Smith of Greene Co., 1858

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper
From 1858:

"Bodies Found. - We learn from officers of the steamer Magnolia, which arrived here yesterday morning from Vienna, that they were informed by the warehouse keeper at Kemp's Landing when they touched at that place, that two additional bodies of persons who perished by the disaster of the Eliza Battle had been recovered. One was the body of W.T. Smith of Greene county; the other, which was also that of a white man, was not recognized.

Not my line, just sharing.
PICKENS / DUFFEY in 1850 census, Greene Co AL - from TN?

Does anyone know the identity of the following I found in 1850 census, Greene Co, AL:

Israel PICKENS, age 18 (b. ca 1832), b. TN
living in household of Col Samuel W. PICKENS and wife [Mary Gaillard THOMAS)

Louisa PICKENS, age 11 (b. ca. 1839), b. TN
living in household of Jane DUFFEY [widow of William L. DUFFEY]

Samuel PICKENS and Jane (PICKENS) DUFFEY are brother and sister.

I am wondering if Israel and Louisa might be brother and sister - relatives who perhaps were orphaned and are now living in other families. The odd thing is that I can find no sibling of Samuel and Jane that is deceased by 1850, who ever lived in Tennessee.

This particular PICKENS family [Samuel and Jane's extended family] were pretty well established in Alabama, and it seems to me, based on the little I do know about them, that they don't have any obvious close connection to any of the Tennessee branches.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Thanks
Terry (Pickens) McLean
tmclean@earthlink.net

Alvin Absolam NUNNELEE or NUNLEY of AL and MS

Alvin (Absolam) married Mary Angeline [? WHO ?] before 1843 in either Alabama or Mississippi - both were born in Alabama but all of their children were born in Mississippi......

This man is shown as Absolam NUNNELEE on the 1860 and 1870 census but shown as Alvin NUNLEY on the 1850 and 1880 census and all 4 censuses have the same wife and children !!!

N-U-N-N-E-L-E-E is a unique spelling and used only by the descendants of William Womack Nunnelee (1738 Va - 1804 Ga) who changed the surname from NUNNALLY when he moved to Georgia in the 1780's.

There may be a major clue as to his parents on the 1860 Pontotoc Co MS transcription below.......???

1860 Pontotoc Co MS/Chesterville/HH 1446-1446/pg 705
(22 Aug 1860)
NUNNELEE, Alvin /HH/wm age 40 Alabama
Nunnelee, Angeline /wf age 32 Al
Nunnelee, Jas McC /wm age 16 Ms
Nunnelee, Mary A /wf age 11 Ms
Nunnelee, Alice M /wf age 09 Ms
Nunnelee, Willis H /wm age 04 Ms
Nunnelee, Joseph T /wm age 01 Ms
HANDLEY, Malinda /wf age 63 Georgia
McFarland, William /overseer/wm age 23 Ms

I am positive this Malinda HANDLEY is Malinda Amanda [MORGAN] who 1m Howell NUNNELEE 04 Feb 1818 in Elbert Co GA - both born in GA.
Shortly after Howell's death 1827 Dallas Co AL, Malinda 2m William F. Handley and had 6 chn live to adulthood.
So the only reason I can think of as to why she wasn't living with her Nunnelee or Handley chn in 1860, is that Alvin (Absolam) must be her SON or his wife Mary Angeline is her DAUGHTER...... Alvin (Absalom), however, FITS the 1830 and 1840 Dallas Co AL censuses as her oldest son whereas Mary Angeline doesn't.........

Many years ago I made this note but didn't "source" it...
"Absolam NUNNELEE moved from Eutaw, Greene Co AL to Tupelo, Lee Co MS." Lee Co MS was created in 1866 and Tupelo was established as a city in 1870 and Alvin Absolam was living in Monroe Co MS by 21 Nov 1850.

IF this information is correct, was Alvin Absolam living in Eutaw because Stephen Franklin Nunnelee was also living there before 28 Nov 1850....?
Stephen Franklin Nunnelee was the son of Howell Nunnelee and Malinda [Morgan] - was Alvin Absolam his older brother?

If you have any information on Alvin (Absolam) or Mary Angeline, I would deeply appreciate your email.

SOURCES (1) Elbert Co GA marriage records (2) 1850 Monroe Co MS census (3) 1870 Lee Co MS census (4) 1880 Lee Co MS census (5) 1850 DeSoto Parish LA census) (6) LA death index (7) Greenwood Cemetery records, Caddo Parish LA
(8) Mississippi Marriages, 1776-1935 (anc com database)
"Alice Nunlee and K C Ward 05 May 1877 Lee Co, Ms"
1m: "Willis H Nunnelee and Ada Ward 22 Oct 1876 Lee Co MS"
"O T Nunnelee and Ida Ward 28 Oct 1885 Lee Co MS"
"Lillian L Nunnlee and John A Altom 08 Dec 1881 Lee Co MS"
"Miss M A Nunelee and W B Merritt 20 Oct 1867 Lee Co MS"
2m: "W H Nunnelee and Doza Fowler 01 Dec 1886 Lee Co MS"
.....
I am researching Robert Williams m. Nancy Rencher in Greene Co. I have not found any connections for my Robert, but have found some information on other Williams trying to connect them to Robert. If interested in these families of Greene, I have found some information to pass along.
Lawrence Williamsb. 1793 Nash Co., NC
Wheaton Williams, son of Weeks Williams
David Williams m. Barbara Elizabeth Gunn in Robertson Co. TN
Would like to find out some info on Dorcas Williams, daughter of H. and S. Williams, married first Isham Henry, second Henry Williams. I think she may be sister to Charles and Benjamin Williams also found in Greene Co., AL.
Several of the Williams, Harris, and Henry families came out of North Carolina, and Robertson Co, TN at about the same time. I don't think this is my line, but so many of the names are the same in my family.
Robert was b. TN according to 1850 census, a child named Henry Wms age 9 was living with Robert and Nancy in this census. By 1860 I find no record of Henry or Robert. Nancy has taken her 3 children to Butler Co, AL. Their names were Thomas Nelson, John Robert, and Fannie Williams.

I am looking for information on Elbert G. Rose who was born in Alabama to Thomas Rose and is shown on the 1860 Pickens Census as age 1. He is in Mantua, Green, Alabama during the 1870 census at age 12. He married Anna S. in 1880. Does anyone have access to a marriage book who might check to see if their marriage is listed? Also if anyone has any information on Thomas Rose in Pickens during the 1860 Census, I would appreciate it. Thank you for any advice or guidance.
Betty

improved Husband & Husbands family tree

at
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=ildau&a...
I've posted an improved descendancy of Husband & Husbands families of the Southern Colonies, and later Southern states. a few went to PA OH IL
---
I'll probably improve that online family tree a little in coming months. So far I haven't been systematic in spelling of the surname, so y'all may have to search under both Husband and Husbands.
---------------------------
It's better to go directly to the above URL for website, or via worldconnect family trees portal at www.rootsweb.com
or search at http://wc.rootsweb.com
BY THOSE PORTALS, y'all can look at the source notes, or can look at more recent generations than are provided by the early global descendancy, for person on the family tree by just clicking on a name.
ALSO via those portals, the latest updates and corrections are incorporated into the family tree.
----------------------------------------
BUT, as a less preferred alternative, in case the above options aren't possible, here's what my descendancy currently says:
1.
John Hall Cemetery

I would like to know if someone could go to this Cemetery and get pictures for me. I have directions: The State of Alabama owns 15.49 acres of land located in Section 4,
Township 22 North, Range 2 East. This tract of land is about 6 miles North of Eutaw, Alabama in Springfield (no longer a town) off US 11 on county road and located on it is the Springfield Fire Tower. The John Hall Cemetery is about 25 yards East of said 15.49 acres and is on private property. The Hall cemetery is difficult to find as it is completely overgrown with bushes, vines, etc. This is per a website and I do not know how accurate it is. If you already have the pictures I would love to have a copy of them.Thank you
My ggggrandparents, Joseph & Nancy Alexander ( her name was Anna Nancy but I believe she went by Nancy) moved from NC to Greene Cty. AL, prior to 1830. My gggrandfather, Wallace Alexander, married Elizabeth Mayes (Mays, Maze)? Dec. 29, 1830 in Greene Cty. His sister, Elizabeth married Robert White, July 10, 1826. Another sister, Catherine, married Thomas Newton Mayes (probably a relative of Elizabeth Mayes). I believe Joseph & Nancy may have died while living in Greene Cty. Their ages on the 1850 census show as 80 yrs. Wallace & his family moved to Newton Cty., Ms. at some point and show up there on the 1870 census. Wallace & Elizabeth had 9 children. Nancy A., Joseph E., Margaret J., Mary, William H., Samuel J., Martha, and Marcena were all born in AL. Their 9th child, Sarah was born in MS. Joseph & Samuel both died during the Civil Ware in MS. William H. was my ggrandfather. Any information on any of the above would be greatly appreciate.

I need to contact someone that has knowledge of the old New Hope Presby Church. It is supposed to be located about 2 miles south of the intersection of Hwy 43/11 and I-20/59 on left side of road anlong Hwy 43/11. My GGG grandfather and an original settler of Greene co, AL, Henry Storey, came to Greene co in 1820. He died in 1837 and supposed to be buried in the New Hope Church cemetery. He served in Rev War 1776-1783 and was awarded a pension f or his service.

My reason for asking is that I want to place a Revolutionary War tombstone marker in Henry Storey's memory of his Revolutionary War service to the USA in the New Hope cemetery since he supposed to be buried there. Any information and point of contcact for the Church would be appreciated.

Three brothers came through Greene County in the mid-1840s and one of them is believed to have married there. He apparently was killed by an Indian and the other two brothers went on to Mississippi and settled there. Their names were David Sherrill, Elisha Elcanie and Darrel Thompson. Darrel is the one who married at some point and who was killed. Does this ring a bell with anyone's family history? I really want to find Darrell!
HAMMETT family from Boligee. Looking for any descendents of Henry C. Hammett, born abt. Aug. 1843 SC who lived in Mantua and Boligee. His first wife was Sarah J. and they had at least 3 children--Vardra born 1870 and Etta born July 1873/75 and Robert Henry born Feb 1878.By 1900, Sarah had died and he had married Araminta (Mittie) Gandy, daughter of Daniel J. Gandy & Thetney Murphy. They had 9 children (1910 census tells) including Elizabeth born 1894, Balmer or Valmar born 1895, Mattie L. 1897, & Mary W. 1899, and Sallie born 1902. By 1910, (Mary A.) Mittie was widowed. Death index shows she died Oct. 17, 1911 and Sallie died May 14, 1910. That left Etta, Henry R., Lizzie, & Balmar/Valmar. Lizzie moved to B'ham where she married and lived until her death. She had no children. Balmar did have children, including a daughter Barbara, probably born in the late 1930's. Mittie was buried in Clinton, but does not give the cemetery. I would like to know her cemetery information and information on any children buried near her. Would also like to learn more about Balmar's family. Mittie was the sister of my great-grandfather Daniel Jones Gandy. Thanks! Charlotte
Joel and Mary Doss orphans Civil War era

I am researching John Doss who was a Confederate soldier
in the 11th Alabama Infantry, Co. C, who died
of disease on Dec. 27, 1862. He is listed as from Clinton, Mt.Hebron Greene Co. AL. I have found two children who were orphaned and are listed in the Greene Co. AL Orphans Court. index pages 22, 43, 74, 135 and 376.
The children were Joel and Mary Doss. The reason for all
this is that we have always believed we were a Williams
family. Due to the number of Williams my brother tested DNA to see which branch we belong to. Lo and behold we
match the Doss family. Now a story emerges that sometime
prior to or during the Civil War, Doss parents died leaving a
child or children who were taken in and raised by Williams
and took the Williams name. My gr gr grandfather always
said he was born in AL., So now I am asking any of you
researchers out there who know of or have heard of such
events concerning Doss and Williams families to please
contact me.

Vel. wanderone2@msn.com

I am researching Richard D. Saunders who was born in 1849 in Alabama. I have him located in the 1900 census in Milam County Texas with his wife and family and all check out. I also found a R. Saunders age 9 living with S F Crawford in Greene County AL in 1860 census. Can anyone provide information that would help determine if this is my Richard Saunders? The facts check but I am not sure if this is same person.
