Will the person who contacted me on Jul 25, 2008, about Simon Murphy who died intestate and the administrator listed six heirs, each receiving an equal share of the estate please contact me again. You also mentioned that an 1856 map of Greene Co., AL shows J.P. Murphy owning land adjacent to Simon Murphy and that in the 1860 census of Greene Co. the Murphy families are listed as neighbors.
I would so much like to know how I can get a copy of this will? Does this person have a connection to this family?

Thanks

BJMeans

Dr. William Hughes, 1805-1867, & Family

I am a descendant of Dr. William Hughes, b. 1805, and Ellen Cowsett Hughes, through their daughter, Amanda "Addie" Hughes Gibson Kennedy's line. This family lived in Pleasant Ridge, Greene County, AL and in the southern district of Pickens County, where William Hughes was a practicing physician. I have the family album, which belonged to Addie Hughes, b. Sept 1847, and would love to identify some of the Hughes' in the photos. I would appreciate hearing from anyone there who has info about the Hughes family and especially if they have old family photos they could scan and email. I am also trying to locate where Amanda Addie Hughes (who married James Gibson and then Richard Kennedy)was buried. Many thanks.
Susan Holman

Elizabeth Green 1812, Randolph Wood 1805

I am looking for any information on Elizabeth "Eliza" Green b abt 1812 SC. In 1829 she married Randolph Wood and is in the 1830 census in Rutherford Co, NC living on Randolph's inherited property. In 1850 the family is in Spartanburg, SC and in 1860 Elizabeth, a widow is in Cherokee Co, GA. She is living near Jerimiah Green, just younger than she is and could be her brother, and Dr Jesse Green who may be her Uncle?? Elizabeth Green Wood and Dr Jesse Green had connections with the Rutherford Co, NC Green families. Dr Jesse was born in Rutherford Co. His cousin who moved to Arkansas, John C Green b 1818 d 1892 and his son W S Green b 1850 d 1903 are buried in the Fowler Family Cemetery on banks of Green River. This is the property Theodosia Wood Fowler, sister of Randolph Wood, inherited from her father Zachariah Wood in 1826. The cemetery in Polk Co NC was formerly in Rutherford County. I am hoping someone will connect with my great great grandmother Elizabeth Green Wood.
Hope to hear from you soon. Nell
I am searching for information on Minnie Underwood Mims, because she was at one time married to John Parker Murphy and had a daughter named Pearl who was born around 1911, and is allegedly the half sister of my husband. Minnie Underwood's 1st husband was William Mims and John P. Murphy was her 2nd husband, although no marriage records have been found to prove this. The story is that when John P.Murphy passed away she went back to her 1st husband. My husband and his family have been trying to locate Pearl Murphy,or any other children Minnie may have had with J.P. Murphy. Pearl Murphy a/k/a Pearl Mims/Pearl Hackworth.Pearl's husband was named Howard Hackworth. This is why I am researching any information I can find on Minnie Mims and the Mims family. By the way I am also researching the Murphy, and Underwood names.
Thanks for you response.

Minnie was an active member of the First Nazarene Church. Minnie Underwood's first husband was William Benjamin Mims and her second husband was John Parker Murphy. The first marriage produced 3 sons: William "Bill" Mims, Randolph Mims, and Derwood B. Mims and Savanah Mims. The second marriage produced a daughter Pearl Ophelia Murphy.I believe that this family may have lived in either Green Co.,Pickens Co., or Sumter Co., Alabama I hope that this information is helpful.

Searching for Brown family in Greene Co.

I am searching for information on ancestors of my husband.

I have information that Josephine Marietta Harrison (daughter of Henry Harrison and Elizabeth Jane Higginbotham) married a Jos. T. Brown on June 28, 1866 in Greene Co. I am needing a document verifying that.

I found Josephine Brown in the 1870 census (Boligee) with her two children, Henry and Ann. Her husband was not listed. She moved to Texas where she married again in 1874. Her son Henry is my husband’s great-grandfather, and we know the rest of her life’s history and her second family.

We just don’t know anything about Henry’s father. So I am looking for marriage records and a possible death or divorce record for Mr. Brown.

There is a possibility I have found but cannot verify. Joshua T Brown, son of Joshua T Brown Sr and Penelope Cook was born about 1842 and is in the 1850 and 1860 census of Greene Co.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Greene County has an excellent research website. It can be found doing a search for GreeneAlGen. It is linked to the Magnolia & Peaches website which offers a very detailed and searchable data base for local cemeteries. The website also features excellent information on early landowners and maps, as well.

The courthouse has records going back to the founding of the county, as well, including wills. Unlike many, it has never burned down.

Happy Hunting

I am trying to find out what happen to Joseph William Houck, Jr., who was from Greensboro and was a member of the 36th AL Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. One of the names listed as inscribed on the monument is a "W. H. Houck". I am wondering if this might have either been mis-read (or mis-typed) and is actually "J. W. Houck". If anyone knows, or can confirm, what actually appears, I would appreciate learning of it. Also, the last information I have on this man is a letter that he wrote while in the line of battle from a location near Marietta, GA on June 25, 1864. I suspect that he probably died soon after, but have yet to learn this for certainty. If there is any further information as to what happened to the "Pvt. Houck" whose name is inscribed, I would also appreciate knowing that also.
Thank you,
-Tom Melton

I am doing research on the Afro-American Collins family that lived in Mt. Hebron, Greene Co. Alabama around 1860. I found a number of Collins families on the 1870 Federal Census for Mt. Hebron Greene Co. Alabama. The ones that I am most interested in are Alfred Collins born abt. 1800 Georgia or SC, Lucinda Collins born abt. 1825 Ala, Pleas Collins born abt. 1849 Ala, Fed Collins born abt. 1854 Ala, Callie Collins born abt 1856, Irene Collins born abt. 1858 Ala, Alice Collins born abt. 1860 Ala, and Nancy Collins born abt. 1800 Kentucky. When checking the 1860 slave census for this area I found three slave owners who lived in Alabama, Josiah Collins born abt. 1804 Kentucky, B.F. Collins and a Nancy Collins. Of the three only Josiah was listed as living in Mt. Hebron, Greene AL. So I am wondering if these Afro-American Collins could be part of Josiah'a former slaves? By the way his name and his wife's name is also listed on this census page along with other Collins'.
Thanks
Trying to find connections to Peter E., Dandridge Williams sons of David Greenhill Williams VA to Robert Williams b. 1824. Or there may be a connection to the Sorsby family. Rebecca Williams m. Alexander Sorsby-sons Nicholas, William, and Stephen were also next to Robert Wms on the 1850 census. Alesander died in NC and Rebecca Williams m. Edwin D. Whitehead. Edwin and Rebecca are in Greene 1850. Jackey Whitehead sister to Edwin married Charles Williams -she died 1877, Charles died 1852 Mt. Hebron, Greene Co. Robert completely disappeared bet. 1854 (birth of last child) and 1860, wife Nancy Rencher Williams went to Butler Co., AL 1860 living next to her brother, sister and mother.
I have a complete dead end-any help will be appreciated.
Thank you for the reply. I have searched the Greene Co files at usgenweb. I haven't been to the courthouse-maybe this summer I can get someone to drive over with me. Unfortunately, most of the cemeteries at Garrets Shop and Forkland are not recorded. Robert is not on the Williams Cemetery list in Greene or the one in Hale. There is also the possibility he did not die or did not die in Greene. Nancy was listed as widow on the census-but she may have just left and went to live close to her family. The strange thing is I can't find any records on Henry b. abt. 1841. Thank you again.

Needing information on McMinis/McManus families in the early 1800s in Green Co. It could be that my g g grandmother Rutha McMinis'/McManus' father lived in Green Co. Rutha was born in 1817 - possibility part Native American. Any information would be truly appreciated. Thank you!
