There is a copy of a family history written in 1929 by Joseph Lee Allison son of Claborn Smith Allison who was the son of Elijah M. Allison and Catherine Pate stating that Elijah "[died] April 6th, 1863. Relapsed with measles. Elijah Allison is burried at Old Stand Baptist Church House, Franklin County Alabama, 2 and 1/2 miles north west of Belgreen, Alabama."

This history was passed to a Benny Evans (ancestry.com member) by Joseph Lee Allison's daughter Juanita Allison Cook - Benny Evans posted it on ancestry.com on 3 Jan 2009

Could the Elijah who died in Newson Hospital between February and May 1863 perhaps be a different Elijah? (age 68 seems a bit old to be in Battle) - In the history Joseph Lee mentions Elijah's wife Catherine Pate and says she and was the sister of John Pate

Hi Edwyna,
Yes, I'd love to be in touch. And yes, I noticed that the posting was 10 years old - just thought I'd take a chance!
You can reach me directly at mohawkrivergirl at yahoo.

If you have that photo of Lou, I'd love to see it. Do you have it scanned? One of my cousins said another cousin had a photo of Lou's daughter Eddie Alsobrook, and that she was the loveliest woman she had ever seen. It would be neat to compare that photo to Lou. I will see if I can track it down.

My great grandpa was Robert Alexander Duncan. We have always wondered if there was a blood connection to the Alexanders via one of our Colbert Co./Franklin Co. brick walls.

Hope to hear from you! Thanks for responding.
Mary

It seems our families are connected several ways. Andrew Hall was my husband's family. And the Witt's married into my Wileman Family. (1850 Franklin Co., AL Dist #6 Wileman, Harrison 46 TN , (or sometimes Cyrena Witt)Larena 40 Lucenia 20, Peter 18, Bathene 14, Josee 12, Margaret 10, Thomas 9, Lucinda 7, James 4, Eliza 3, Martha 1)1850 Franklin Co., LA Dist #6 #453 Squire Hall and family were two doors down Harrison Wileman and family.
Then Mary A. Hall, sister to Andrew and Squire married Franklin Jones 1833 in Blount Co., AL And Franklin Jones also had children by Elizabeth Wileman, which is my line. So you can see our families have several ties.
As to the Indian connection I have never found this but have heard this also. Who was Jno. W. Brown's parents?

I found your information on Squire Hall married Perlena Witt, Daughter Nancy, She was Nancy Cansady Hall, married Sion F. Mitchell, They were my 3rd & $th g-grandparents, Nancy and Sions daughter Viola Cansady married Jno. W. Brown , in Colbert Co. Al. in 1884.Thay had 1 son, William Wesley Brown, of Red Bay, Sion & Nancy with family were on the 1880 Census in Chickasaw, Colbert, Al. My question is "Has anyone heard when Nancy Died, We were told the story that she fell into a vat of hot molassis, sometime after their last son, Robert D. Mitchell was born in 1885, sone afterwards, Sion passed away, and the 3 youngest children went to live with Marion Hall, Nancy's brother, We were also told they were Cherokee Indains, does anyone know of this? They married and are shown in the 1850 and 1860 Fed Census records. Popular theory has been that Dorman D Taylor and Sarah Kent were the parents of Dave but recent DNA testing has shown that to be suspect. Any other information?

thank you so much for your reply. Very interested in your information on the Charles Greek Barksdale Family. My ancestor was the 3rd wife of son, Thomas Franklin Barksdale-Edith Montarie Wylie. She and my mother were great genealogy friends--with my mother visiting Spruce Pine several times. Am interested in finally knowing the correct information on this family and the spouses of the children. my e-mail is: jeaninesmith@gmail.com
Jeanine, I have information on this family. Charley Greek was my g-g grandfather. My great-grandmother was Louise Barksdale Overton, who is the child missing from the 1900 census as she was already married. I believe I have at least some of the other info. you are looking for. I believe Julia C. may be the same person as Ada.

I needed to add a few more notes. This apparently is not the same William Whitlock as your uncle because this William was born abt. 1878 and seems to have died bef. 1930. In the 1920 Brick, Colbert Co., AL Census he is listed in Dwelling 211/Family 215.

Just wanted to show you this Whitlock/Vandiver marriage since you were searching for connections.

My husbands maternal grandfather was John Melton Vandiver (son of John M. and Margaret Parlee Hulsey Vandiver). His sister Agnes Maud Vandiver was married to a William Whitlock. You can see them listed together in the 1920 Census- for Brick, Colbert Co., AL. They were the parents of Bertha, Paul, Leeanda, Maud, Effie and Irving.

Hope that helps :).

Hi Kim, thanks for your note!

I'll start with commenting on the "strange writing" on my headstone. It's not Arabic, but I think most people would guess that. It is my own little joke to future generations to figure out, but its not a secret. My favorite book is Lord Of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien had invented a nearly complete language (Elvish) to support the background of his stories. The inscription on my stone is a quote from the book. In Elvish, it says, "Elen sila lumenn omentielvo" which translates as "A star shines on the hour of our meeting." So I used a "star" to separate the birth year from the death year instead of a "dash".

The poem on the back of the stone is also from the Lord Of The Rings, so it is a "clue" to solve my puzzle. The Chinese character is "Tao" which means "the road" or "the way"... so it goes with the poem, but it is also a link to my son Bobby, who was born in Korea (his stone is next to mine) where they use the Chinese characters in some of their writing. As a final note about the stones... I used to make headstones for about 10 years, and I went to my old boss and he let me come back there to make mine, Bobby's, and my mom and dad's (James Archie and Freida). My dad died less than a year after Bobby, and their stone is just down the row, next to my infant brothers. I was glad that I could make them myself, and glad that they came out as nicely as they did.

Family resemblances: Yes, it is eery, isn't it! I see the Vandiver traits in a lot of old photos too.

Genealogy info below thanks to my uncle Ray Vandiver. Ray and a cousin (Jim Vandiver) have both done a lot research into our family line, and their wives familes, and the info branched out further and further.

Not sure why Nancy Catherine was not buried next to W.H. Sr. (married abt 1866) unless it was just because their son (W.H. Jr.) died first, and maybe wanted to be next to his dad. But also, I think the best guess is because they were divorced (not sure when). W.H. Sr. married another woman, Ruth Modena Holland, in 1908, with whom he had 4 children.

The children of William Henry Sr. and Nancy Catherine are:
William Henry Jr. (1867-1931)
James Henry (1869-1952)
William Hezekiah (June 1870 - died as infant)
Rosa Ella (1871-1958)
Martin Alexander (1873-1904)
Liza Jane (1875-1954)
Hugh Edward (1876-1916) - from whom I am descended
Noah Arch (1878-1964)
George Washington (1881-1974 - moved to Arkansas)
David Crockett (1883-1960)

The info my uncle shows for your family line is:
William Riley Vandiver (1845-1927)
Matilda Clementine Allen (1842-1946)

Lou Ella Vandiver (1872-1925) - Lou Ella had a sister Mary (1878- ), and brother Walker (1886-1946)
Levi Murray (1861-1938)

Children of Lou Ella and Levi were:
Susan Clementine (unknown birth/death)
Velma Louise (unknown birth/death)
Lillie Ethel (1890-1919)
Claude Elvin (1892-1948)
Otis Chester (1899- )
William Riley (1901- )
James Alexander (1904-1981)
Ella Lee (1907- )
Ruby Imogene (1909-2008)

Of course, the info here is not guaranteed to be accurate, but I know that Ray and Jim have done a lot of work and tried to record everything correctly. I do find some errors in places, but they have really done a great job and I appreciate that I get updates of their Family Tree Maker files once in awhile.

If you want more info, you can email me directly at:
stan [at] mistymountains [dot] us

Regards,
Stan Vandiver

P.S. Sorry if this look like one BIG paragraph... I didn't write it that way, but that's how it looks in the preview before I post it.

Stan,
Your story really is touching! I am glad you are sharing it. I have a few questions for you:
1) Do you know why Nancy C Vandiver is not buried right next to her husband?
2) I know it was Nancy's second marriage.. was W H Vandiver married to someone before Nancy? Do you know all of his children's names?
3) My ancestor was Riland (Riley) Vandiver b around 1848 lived in Newburg/Vandiver Holler area married Clementine Allen Hurst their daughter LouElla Vandiver married my GGGrandfather Levi Murray.. any of that ring a bell?
4) Is that your stone that has (I think) Arabic written on it? What does it say? Just curious.
5) The picture of Willey Vandiver on his tombstone SO MUCH resembles my mother's family it is eery!
Thanks so much!
Kim

Barb,I did some checking with the care taker of Beale years ago plus alot of my family is buried there in the old and new section,From what all I have been told alot of cemeteries were moved there and not any of the people who even with proof of them being buried in these cems has shown up at Beale as they were supose to.I was told many years ago by a worker from Beale that alot of the stones were just lined up across the back of the fence at Beale.I saw this myself even when I was very young and before starting genealogy,So I know he was speaking the truth,After I did start genealogy I went to search these stones, but most dates and names were unreadable and alot of the stones that were there were missing,Even if the stones fell over or broke, why wasnt the grave recorded or there?,Also another researcher I know very well was hunting for the Mayes/Maze/Mayse cemetery that at one time was close to the goodyear tire plant,When the plant was built,Again we were told it was moved to Beale Chapel,But none who were buried in this cem were at Beale as we were told either,Makes you wonder if what happened at Pleasant Ridge didnt also happen at Beale,People were being buried on top of where other people were suposedly buried,My mother and I went in 1970's to see her baby brother's grave, He was buried at Pleasant Ridge,Sometime around 1912,But a new grave was where it should have been,That is when we talked to the care taker there,He said they had buried people on top of people,So we never were able to find him again.I also tried several times to contact anyone from Beale to get a cemetery reading. But no one was willing to talk about it.But I dont think none of the graves that were said to have been moved to Beale ever really got moved,if they did it was just the headstones and they were never put on a grave as they should have been,So we most likely won't ever fine them now,Contact me I had my email changed, its fredandlois@localnet.com Lois
Lois,I tried to send a picture that we took of the area. The cattle had destroyed any sign of headstones.I hope you got the picture .I would love to have your new informaton on the Halls.I do wish we could find who move one of the cemeteries to Beale, maybe they could tell us the location in the Beale cemetery. It has to be in the bock of the new part, but they didn't mark the area.It seems such a shame..

Barbara,I think I talked to you before,I was wondering if you were the one who went to the old Hall homestead on Millstone RD The farm now owned by Edwards,I was just there last summer,And Mr Edwards son told me that nothing of the cemetery was left, there had been two cemeteries there at one time, but 1 was moved to Beale Chapel cemetery,He also told me there was only 1 headstone that was found there and it was for a Withers,But I know this to be wrong because my father was Wilbert L Hall and my grandfather farmed this farm before leaving WV,My dad said there were many stones there at one time,It is weird all these stones are now gone.I also found info from the death cert of my ggrandfather Andrew J Hall's first wife,Adelaide Bias Hall Adelaide died on the Hall farm there in May 19 1899,And I feel that Jubal Hall some refer to as Joseph Hall was also buried there with his wife Louisa Legg Hall,Some say Juble first name was Joseph but on his son Andrews death cert it is only listed as father Juble Hall,I have never found it anywhere listed as Joseph,I have some new info on this line as if you want contact me,Lois Hall Downour

Check out the Stidham Family Tree. The son,William Joseph Williams, is listed as William Williams Jr. It shows his descendants. The daughter-in-law of William and Martha Brumley is related to the Stidham line. Hope this helps.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
