Matt,
Thanks so much for the reply and the information. Laast year I spoke with a number of descendants of James Harold Whitehead Rosa Ables. They live in northern Mississippi. Is that where you live. I know they have one daughter still living. she is in her ninties and I spoke with her although I spoke mostly with her daughter. I also spoke with some Whiteheads in the same town. They were all very nice people.
I have a lot of information about the Ables. The parents of Rosa Ables were Thomas M Ables or Abel and his wife Lucinda Elizabeth Ray or Elizabeth Lucinda Ray. She was born in 1837 in tallapoosa co Al and married Thomas M Ables in 1862 in Winston co Al. thomas M Ables was born in 1832 in Tenn and his family went to eastern Al in the early 1830's. He was in Winston co Al by 1860. They owned some land in Winston co Al but apparently were share croppers because they moved around a lot probably going where the work was. They werer in the Glen Allen Al area of Fayette co Al in the 1900 census. That is where James Harold Whitehead and Rosa Ables married in 1900. Thomas and Lucinda only had one child living with them in the 1900 census. That was mark Ables who was born I believe in 1884 or 1887. Rosa had already married James Harold Whitehead before the census was taken.
I was able to find a little information when I talked to her descendants in northern Mississippi although they did not know a lot about Rosa's parents. This is what I am trying to find out and maybe you can help me or maybe you know a relative that knows a lot about the Ables and the Whteheads.
Thomas M Ables and Lucinda ray were listed in the 1900 Fayette co Al census as I mentioned. they lived in the Glen Allen area in northern Fayette co al. the Whiteheads lived very close. I don't know why Thomas and Lucinda Ables were living there unless maybe they were share cropping. In the 1910 Choctaw co Oklahoma census Thomas M Ables is listed as a servant living with the Rone family. He is listed as a widower so Lucinda died sometime between 1900 and 1910 which would mean that Lucinda died in Fayette co al in 1900 or later or she died when they went to Choctaw co OK before 1910 or she died on the way or they left Fayette co Al after 1910 and went somewhere else before going to Choctaw co Ok. I am trying to find when Lucinda Ray died and where she was buried and I have searched for seven years and no one seems to know. Lucinda was Rosa's mother.
They had anotehr daughter named Sarah Elizabeth Ables born in Winston co Al in 1877. She was Rosa's sister. It was common knowledge apparently that sarah Elizabeth Ables was part indian which would mean either Lucind aRay was an indian or Thomas M Ables was an indian or part indian. Have you ever heard that Rosa was part indian or do you know possibly a relative that might have heard that and if so what kind? thanks, Ross
