John G. Payne was a great uncle to my great grandfather, John Henderson (Hen) Payne. My grandfather was Henry Gilbert (Gil) Payne. Also in my family tree are Helms and
Shortency, on my grandmother's side.
My grandfather once owned the area that is now Camp Sumatanga. He bought the land that I now live on for the same amount that he sold the camp area for. When the lake is drained a bit you can still see the stacked rocks where his house stood.
Indian ancestors on my grandmother's side were to be in the Trail of Tears but hid out in local caves and later married Irish/Scottish and German settlers.
On a different note: on my father's side, my great great grandfather (I think that is far enough back) was the shierff that held Jesse James prisoner when he was transported through the area. He was later shot in the back by a moonshiner.
