I would like to locate any information as to Jacob (Washa) Taylor's wife Martha last name. Any information as to where she was from , when she died, and where. It is sad that I know so little about her. Also where and when did he die?
Thanks
Pat Smith

"Richard
(who used ro ride his bike up and down Foshee Road in the early/mid 1970s)"

Really? So many relatives from there, Pineview, Wallace, Moyeville, Barnette Crossroads; Godwins, Steeles, Booths, Byrds, Chavers, Kennedy, etc. Wow! The more I read about your posts, the more I would love to know. If you weren't born until 1964, all of my cousins are 10 to 20 years older.

Re: Where is Mortimer, Alabama?

I hope you get this since it's been so long, but I just found this information!

I have been looking for this info because my great great grandmother is recorded as buried in Mortimer in 1917.

According to the "Alabama, Post route map showing post offices with intermediate distances on mail routes in operation on the 1st of January 1928," Mortimer is located 1 1/2 miles just west of McCullough, Escambia County, AL. McCullough still exists. It is located in the northwest portion of the county.

You can find this map at "http://www.archives.state.al.us"

Click on "Search Our Collections" --> Maps

From the drop down menu choose "Post Route Maps" and click "next." You may have to click "Next" twice. I do for some unknown reason.

Scroll down to E-006 - Alabama, Post route map showing post offices with intermediate distances on mail routes in operation on the 1st of January 1928 - 1928 - Map.

Click on Map and use the tools to zoom in on Mortimer.

You can also find Mortimer on a 1912 map.

Search Our Collections --> Local government/County records on microfilm --> Alabama Counties. Scroll down to Escambia. Choose "Tracking Your Roots: Escambia County." Choose "1912 map of Escambia County, AL."

This map isn't very accurate, but it does give a general location of Mortimer.

I find it interesting it appears on the 1912 map, but not on the 1913 Soil survey map of Escambia County (U. S. Dept. of Agriculture with the Alabama Dept. of Agriculture and Industries). (Also found in the map section, under counties --> Escambia.), and then appears again on the 1928 Post Route map. It is still on the Postal Route Map, yet the Mortimer Post Office only existed 1900-1919.

We hope to be able to go over there and look around this year.

I hope you get this and it helps!
Thanks.
The Moniac family name has many spellings; one of which, is Manac, so I know they are related. What I need to do is link them on the genealogy tree. Do you know if he was her father or who her parents were? I am researching a linkage to the Poarch Creeks for my grandson and need to put these two in the correct spot on the genealogy tree.
Thanks again for the quick reply.

Soooo many people are posting erroneous info in the family tree charts, it is driving me nuts, I am trying to connect my grandson to the Poarch Creeks. He has a direct parent-to-child link straight down from Sehoy III, but in order to be recognized, he has to connect to somebody on the 1870 or 1900 Escambia, AL census or 1900 Special Monroe County Census. I need a family tree connecting any of the Moniacs, Weatherfords, or ? on those census directly to Adline Elizabeth Weatherford Moniac.
Thanks for your help.

In the book, "Red Eagles' Children, Weatherford vs Weatherford" by University of Alabama Press, 2012, there is a genealogical chart on the Stiggins family. It shows William Arthur Sizemore (d:1858) married Mary (Polly) Baker (1770-1862) and produced Absolom Sizemore (1790-1854ca) who married Susannah Stiggins [1st husband Hatterway)(1795-1865ca)] in 1816. Hope this doesn't muddy your water too much.

I've been searching for several years for any information on my great grandmother, Texia Wadkins. She married my great grandfather William David Ledkins (1875 – 1957) in 1896. It is my understanding that she was born in Georgia. They lived in the Jack Spring community in Escambia county by 1900, and are in Pollard in the 1910 census. She died in November 1918, most likely from the influenza (http://www.flu.gov/pandemic/history/1918/your_state/southeas...).
I am the ggggrand daughter of Jacob (Washa) Taylor. His daughter Martha Jane Taylor Lancaster was my ggrandmother.
I know that Martha's brother was Richard Lawrence Taylor, and he moved to Fls.What I find odd is Martha lived and died in Gordo,Ala and was married to Joseph Lancaster,but how did she come to live there. I also would like to know if you could help me with the 21 docket as to Jacob being accepted . The court house had burned and Martha died 1892.I need certified copies for all records as to tribal membership. I am not even sure when and where Jacob died, and his wife MarthaAny help would be wonderful
Thanks Pat.
Hi and thanks for the reply. I'm stuck at finding John Brown's father. There's lots of speculation out there about John being from the Bartlet Brown line from Albemarle County, VA, but I've yet to find anything solid. I'm descendant from John's son, Collins Brown.

I just found documentation online from court documents in Barnwell county that shows that Barnett Brown Sr. left lesser amount of land to his son John Brown which could be John Wesley. He would have been a younger son down the line which would have been a reason to move to new territory to get better established. I am hoping to find more. I have posted the document under the Blackburn family tree. My email is cathysylvstr@yahoo.com
I also am struggling tracing the Brown's of Conucuh County, Alabama. I am decended from John Wesley through Willis William, George Washington, John Henry, and Sterling Ashton Winfield (my grandfather). I can not prove John Wesley or his father. Many trees list Bartlett, but I see no documentation. Have you had any luck tracing John Wesley?

Re: John Marion Woods b 1830-1835 SOUTH CAROLINA

Hello Linda,

Thank you for letting me know about the meetings.

I hope the following is not a repeat for you. These are a summary of the "MYSTERY of John Marion WOODS, SR." I have puzzle pieces and have looked FOR YEARS for pieces that would connect them all. :-)

1870 AND 1880 US Census records both have John Marion Woods, Sr.'s birthplace as SOUTH CAROLINA. How does that work with the supposed Hollinger connection ???

NEXT STEPS:
(1) Get copies of obits and death certificates for all his children.
(2) Get reputable history for John Marion Woods, Sr. b abt 1830-5 SOUTH CAROLINA.

HELP is needed on these people. CAREFUL HELP. Many folks seem enamored by the "Indian" connection and have cut & pasted information that may not be correct.

My information may be incorrect as well.

I hope that a young analytical person will pursue this and figure out the TRUTH!

Source: RootsWeb.com Entry #21295 posted by Kelly Stidham - Title of Post = "Stidham" had parents of Margaret Wood(s) Steadham [Mrs. Reuben Steadham] as "Sis Woods" and a "McDowell" The source given = "Henry H. McCawley, Jr. Mobile, AL interviewed Oct. 1, 1988." I believe strongly that the McDowell and Woods families are connected.

This connects the "McDowell" name to Margaret. Many people have posted [or cut&pasted] that Margaret is d/o Mary Weatherford - They may not be happy to consider other options because of the "Indian" connection that Mary Weatherford provides.

I will start by saying that there is PROOF that Mary Weatherford was NOT the biological mother of: John Marion Woods, Jr. [b abt 1860]; Mary Woods [b abt 1864] and Margaret Ann "Maggie" Woods Steadham [b 25 Mar 1864]

I can't say with 100% confidence who the biological mother was for these 3 children, but there is a possibility that is worth reviewing/pursuing CAREFULLY.

Possibility: That Susan McDowell was very likely the biological mother of some children of John Marion Woods, Sr. [b abt 1830 SC] OR another man named Woods - perhaps John Marion Woods had a brother that married Susan McDowell? HAS ANYONE TRACED JOHN MARION WOODS, Sr. LINE????? I have found no other better contenders for husband of Susan McDowell. I am open to any other ideas with proof.

If John Marion Woods is not the father of Susan McDowell's children, then he may be the uncle [if so, who was his brother?]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SOURCE: Two articles in Erma Baggett's book, "Across the Creek", pp 65-66 & 170-172 have information related to John Marion Woods. The 2nd article by Minnie Ruth Morris Flowers lists the first 3 children: Marion, Mary & Margaret Woods as ch of John Marion Woods "by a previous marriage."  The name of the article is "Dicen & Minnie Ruth Morris Flowers" by Minnie Ruth Morris Flowers pp 170-172.  Flowers adds, "Mary Weatherford Woods raised these three children with her own."
5-13-2005: I e-mailed (Baldwin) Hist. Soc for info on Minnie Ruth Morris Flowers through the Baldwin Co., AL Historical Society, but got no reply.
HERE ARE THE 3 OLDEST CHILDREN - my notes in parentheses:
1. "Marion" [Erma Baggett's book has he d 16 Jun 1903 Uriah, Monroe Co., AL; I have a death cert that may be Jr.(?) or Sr.(?) d 26 Jun 1919 Monroe Co. AL]
2. "Mary" [I cannot find her after the 1880 US Census]
3. "Margaret" Woods. [She m. Reuben Steadham and d before 1905]
1870 US Census "Maryon Wood" per Ancestry.com transcription 2nd/3rd Jul 1870:
Jack Springs, Escambia Co., AL
HH=10  FAM=10
Wood, Maryon   35  MW   Farmer   S. Carolina
Mary     25  FW   K. House Alabama
Marion, Jr.  8  MW   at Home  Do  [=Ditto = "]
Mary        5  FW    "  "    Do
Margaret    4  FW   at Home  Alabama
Ellen       3  FW    "    "  Do
Leon        1  FW    "    "  Do   [Leona]
Boon, Jane     60   FW   Farmer  ississippi
[Note Jane also has Real Estate = $300  & Personal Estate = $500]
Per the 1870 Census, Marion was b abt 1825 SC & his wife, Mary b 1835 AL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marion Woods' daughter, Leona Morris' Death Certificate AL-Escambia Co. # 26380 gives her mother's name as Mary "Boone." Jane, in the 1870 US census with the family is very likely the maternal grandmother of Leona, i.e. Mother-in-Law to Marion Woods, Sr.

1880 US Census for "Marion Woods [July 1, 1880 - Canoe, Escambia Co., AL]:
Marion [Jr.] 20 or 21 years old & Mary [16] both definitely has an "sT" in front of "Son" and "Daughter" respectively. There is a smudge in front of "Daughter" after Margaret's [16] name. I take the "sT" to indicate "step-children." The other children in the home are listed as just “daughter” or “son.”

I believe these 3 children may have been Susan McDowell's. [2010 SAR-H] Susan McDowell's brother Alec/Alex G. McDowell did not marry or have children that we know of; nor did Annie Love McDowell who was also Susan's sister. Annie Love may have been = "Sis"(?)

1998 Patricia Anita Blair Gray shared information with me. She is a descendant of known daughter of Susan McDowell, Laura Alice Woods Johnson. She told me that Laura Alice was raised by Anna McDowell [sister of Susan McDowell] and lived with Uncle Alec/Alex G. McDowell [Susan McDowell's twin brother]. Patricia also said that she had heard the family oral history that "J.P. Woods ran off" [Susan's husband]. The oral history for the McGill descendants was that a Weekley or a Bryars may have fathered Susan McDowell's children. Who knows?

The 1910 US Census has Susan with birthing 7 children, 5 of them still living on the census date [May 17th].

I know 4 of the 5 that are definitely Susan McDowell's children:
Parents on Death Certificate Listed as:
Laura Alice Johnson; "Susan McDowel" [1 "L'] & "Unknown"
Virgina Pearl McGill;"Susan McDowell"&"D.K."[=Don't Know]
Lillie Bell Stewart; "Susie McDowell" & "?"
Rosie Weekley. [blank] b Ala. & [blank] b Ala.
[NOTE: "12-10-19 P" is handwritten on Rosie's death certificate in the father's name space.]

I wonder what the significance of 12-10-19 P is???
Is this Dec 10, 1919?

If the 1910 census is correct and the children of John Marion Woods "by a previous marriage" do belong to Susan McDowell, then either Mary Woods or John Marion Woods, Jr. would still be living in 1910. Margaret Woods Steadham had d 1905.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THEREFORE, the 7 children would be the 4 above + John M., JR. + Mary + Margaret.
==========================================
12 Jan 2011: I have not been able to locate a marriage record for Susan McDowell to anyone to date.  "Deep South Genealogical Quarterly" Vol. X, No. 4, p 165 Nov. 1973 has Susan as "Mrs. Susan WOOD" on her step-brother's marriage record, therefore she was m. <8-18-1866 to a WOOD or WOODS.  Does ANYBODY know who Mr. WOOD or WOODS was?????
POSSIBLE "Mr. Wood" [husband of Susan A. McDowell] contenders besides John Marion Woods:
(1) There is an M.L. Wood 34 b AL on the 1860 Baldwin Co., AL US Federal Census listed as a civil engineer.  Is he the same man as the 20-yr-old M.L. Woods listed in "Cahawba", Dallas Co., AL in 1850 with Leecy Woods 58 b SC & P.J. 18 b AL?  In 1850 M.L. is listed as "Civ. Inginer'   ehdeshazo has a tree [2011] with a Mardis Layfette Wood b 1830 Centreville, Bibb, AL and "Pleasant Green Wood" b 1832 Centreville, Bibb, AL.  I used Deshazo's data [his tree is private] and found other posts with this family as Joshua Wood b 1795 GA  d 1840 in Bibb Co., AL & Leecy Ann Brown b 3 Feb 1793 in Marlboro, SC d 1860 in Selma, Dallas Co., AL.  Their son Mardis L. d  12 Jun 1876 in Selma, Dallas Co., AL and their other son, P.G. d 22 Sep 1901 in London, London, , England.  Noel Wells' tree "Adam's Rib" gives no marriages or children for either M.L. or P.G.
(2) Donna McDowell Scott, found a record for "M. WOODS" dated 4-15-1862.  He enlisted at Stockton, Baldwin Co., AL Co. C of the 15th Confederate Cavalry.  I believe this is John Marion Woods, Sr. Does anyone know more about this man?
Another mystery - Death dates for John Marion Woods, JR. and SR.?:
"Across the Creek" by Erma Baggett p 66 has Marion Woods, Jr. d. 6-16, 1903 in Uriah (Monroe) AL.  I have a death cert for "a" "Marion Woods"  that is extremely hard to read, but the death date is definitely 6-26-1919 in Monroe Co., AL  Is this connected?  Could it be that the John Marion Woods, Sr. (FHS RID#1809) d. 6-16-1903 in Uriah (Monroe) AL instead of Marion Woods, Jr. or vice versa... if the 1919 record even connects to the same family.  Was there a 3rd generation Marion Woods who may have d 1919?  Would cemeteries in Monroe Co., AL help with the Woods family?
===================================================
I ponder and dig more every now and then . . . but then have to get away from it awhile.  My prayer is that SOMEONE can locate puzzle pieces that clear up the MYSTERY.
Please let me know of any insights that arise.
I may have to wait and ask God on the "other side",
Sally
Hi, My grandfather was Samuel Oliver Woods, son of John "Marion" Woods and Mary (Boatwright) Woods, which is the son of John Marion Woods and Mary (Hadley, Weatherford) Woods. My question! Why would John (Marion) Woods be named after the older John Marion Woods, if he was not his real son? Could it be Mary was the step parent or the "st" a meaning for something else?  My family has been researching this for a long time. If you are a tribal member or 1st generation descendant,you might be interested in the meeting at Poarch Creek Reservation, this past Saturday as to whether the members want to bring in the 1910 census. There will be a couple of more meetings before it will be considered to be put up for voting. Samuel Woods and his wife(my grandmother) are both listed as Indian of the 1910 Monroe co., Al. Indian census.
Hi Barbara!
My grandfather was Walter Jernigan from Mobile. As you probably know, he passed back in 2005. He was my favorite grandparent so I often like to do a little digging on the Jernigan side of the family to see what his family was like :)
Thanks for sharing your information on the Jernigan family!
