Good Hope Baptist Church

I have a small photograph of Good Hope Baptist Church that was probably made ca. 1920. The building is typical country church architecture of the 19th century - one room, white clapboard, frame building with louvered blinds on the windows. Does anyone have information as to when this structure would have been built? Also, when was it torn down and the current brick building built? For anyone interested in this picture, I'll be happy to email it.

Don:
The brick church at Good Hope is for sale now. A new church has been built about 1/4 mi. on a little hill in front of the brick church near the north end of the cemetery.

Hello Don,

I have no information on the church's history but I would love a copy since my grandfather, Walter Dennis Calloway is buried there. My email is sc_howard@hotmail.com if you would be kind enough to email it to me and I would also love to know the history of the church, the same as you. I have visited there and knew there were graves much older than the church.

You are so kind to offer the picture. Thank you so much!!

Do you happen to have a William F. Jones born abt 1847 in Coosa County in your files. He married Sarah Mooney in Coosa Co. in 1868.
I have photos of the graves of Jobe Callaway and Benjamin Callaway if you're interested.

No William, I am sorry but I don't. Jones has been my hardest one to crack but I am working on it and will let you know if I find this one. As for Job and William Benjamine Calloway, I have also been to the cemetery and have pictures. Are you related to this line? And thank you so much for willing to share.

Why don't you just call the church and ask? 334-541-3837. Sometimes a member of these little churches has compiled a church history which they will be glad to send you for the price of the postage.

Re: Building/History
Quoting:
"The Records of the Baptist Church of Christ at Goodhope Elmore County...Note: The minutes of the Constitution of this church is lost but from authentic accounts She was constituted by Rev. A.D. Williams on the 1st day of October A.D. 1847 And called the Missionary Baptist Church of Christ at Goodhope, then Coosa County, now Elmore County, Ala.

The following are the names of the members constituted with:
Males Females
James Thompson Pricilla Thompson
J.C. Ingram Mary Ingram
John Ware Mary L. Thompson
Yong D. Hearington Rebecca Ware
Robert Stewart Tabitha Hearington
Clarisa Jackson
Martha Megginson
Mary Stewart"

Separate document:

"The Covenant, And List of Members of the Baptist Church of Christ at Good-Hope, Coosa Co., Ala.
note: The original Covenant of the church is lost, and the following adopted in its stead on the 10th day of April A.D. 1852."

The first church building was a wooden building, unceiled, and had wooden shutters for windows. After a few years, it was ceiled for approximately $35.00 and glass windows were put in. ...the building cost $575 in 1847..."

A history of the church was prepared by Mrs. M.L. Boatwright, and read on July 31, 1949 when the new church building was dedicated.

The original church records are intact and well-preserved in the possession of the Church Clerk and a copy is on file with the Alabama Department of Archives.
