Looking for whereabouts of Baker family who lived near Tedder place off Thacker's Creek as late as 1960. This is in south Cullman, but was Blount Co. at the time. From a letter, they were living in old Thomason home. Want to know if anyone is around who can give directions to old homestead.

This may be way off base but I'm trying to make a connection. In old photographs left to me by my grandmother I have 2 pictures with the name "Baker" listed on them. One say's Aunt Beck Baker, the other Ross Baker. Our family, the McCollum's, lived in Cullman and Blount counties. My GGG Grandfather's brother James Monroe McCollum married a Sarah Tavina Tedder. I'm sure there's a connection here I'm just not sure how? Any thoughts? Thanks, Connie Hopkins

There is most likely a connection. The Tedder family lived right by Thacker's Creek and I know that thier daughters and sons married among the neighboring families. The Bakers were right in there among them, and later lived in the house that my ggrandfather Z.B. Thomason lived in. Do the photos you have of the Bakers show any structures at all?

One photo I have just shows a woman (labeled as Aunt Beck Baker on the back) and she appears to be standing in front of a canvas sheet. The other one has the same woman with 7 children (ages 4 through 21, I'm guessing. The oldest, a young man is labeled Ross Baker). The back of the photo says, Mrs. R. R. Baker and family, Hanceville, Alabama. There are no structures appearing in the photo. It looks as if the photographer (Garrett from Trimble, Ala.) has hung a piece of fabric or canvas stretched between 2 trees. I'm just wondering how my grandmother ended up with these photos?

I would imagine that the Bakers were kin to the McCollums through your kin's marriage to a Tedder. Near as I can tell, the Bakers lived in the near vicinity of the Tedders from way back. Other families in the immediate neighboorhood of the area called 'Thacker's Creek' were the Burns, Thomasons, Keltons, Keiths, Seiberts, Crutchers. This area, if you don't already know, was in far west Blount County, across the Mullberry fork of the Black Warrior River. Hanceville and Garden City were just a few miles north of there. Along about 1902 or so, all the land to the west of the river went to Cullman County. My grandfather always said he was born in Hanceville, but I imagine it was just the nearest town to their farm. The Thomason's lived on the next place beside the Tedder's. The Bakers were there too, and some time after my folks came to Texas in 1889, the Bakers lived in the old Thomason house. They lived in the same house until at least 1960. This land adjoined the Tedder place. I would imagine the Bakers and Tedders were pretty close families, and that the McCollum/Tedder's were blood kin. Bits and pieces of info and lots of patience will eventually shed more light on the matter. Have you looked up the census sheets to see who was neighbor to whom in that area?

I haven't checked the census records on that one yet. I'm in the midst of an all consuming "book" on the McCollum's. I only have those 2 photographs and I imagine the reason my grandmother had them was because she got them upon the death of her parents or aunts etc. The McCollum's were very settled in Blount County. My GGrandmother was from Warrior, AL and she and my GGrandfather married in Hanceville in 1906. They eventually settled in SE MO in the Risco/Malden area. Although I currently live in North Texas, all of our remaining family is in the St. Louis area. Thanks so much for your prompt response to my post. I wish you all the best in your research as well! I think I know who the Baker family in your photo is. My brother-in-law's family. Mrs R.R. Baker is Rebecca Ruth (McCollum) Baker. She had 3 boys and 2 girls. She was married to Henry Richmond Baker. She was born in Blount Co., ALA (so were her parents) and she died in Cullman Co. ALA along with her spouse Henry. Would it be possible to get a copy of this pic to show to my brother-in-law? Do you have a scanner then email it to me if you like and I will ask him if this information about this photo is correct.
Please write as soon as you can @ huggybunch@comcast.net
Thanks,
Bonnie

You mentioned the CRUTCHERS in this post and wonder if you might have any info on them in 1870 AL. I have found other years, but not this one. Thanks!

I don't have much on the Crutchers and am not aware of any 1870 info. My poor old memory is sketchy right now, but I think Alma Kelton married Earl Crutcher in Blount Co. Alabama, but that would have been in the late 1880's. You might try contacting Norm McAnally on the McAnally or Kelton message boards. He would likely have more info than I do. Thanks for your interest!

Do you happen to have any information about a Jane Baker that married James Jones 12 Sept. 1821? I cannot link her to any other Baker family. Thank you for any help.
