Hello:
I just recently came across a statement made by my 2nd great-grandfather John C. Washington that was given to a 1880 census taker that my family had overlooked in our quest to find the parents of our George Washington b. 1821
In 1880 Census Pontotoc MS 3rd Supervisor Dist. pg. 32 George Washington's son John C. makes statement in this entry as follows:
============================================
WASHINGTON, JOHN Race/W Sex/M Age/39 Occu./Farmer B.P./Ala. F.B.P./GA M.B.P./Ala.
===========================================
This would mean that my George Washington was born in GA (not VA as previously thought), and wife Martha Law was born in Ala. I know that Martha had 3 children in ALA, Francis Marion b. early 1840, John C. b. 12 Dec.1840, and Catherine b.1841 that was thought to had passed with mother Martha in childbirth.
I know George left ALA and moved to Muskogee County GA, with Francis and John because he married Mary Ann McEwen (McCuin) in Jan 1845 there as found in marriage licenses.
On the 1850 census they are found in Coosa County ALA, household 993, I find George Washington, new wife Mary Ann and children Francis, John, Mary and Hirum. Also in the same neighborhood is Mary Ann's parents that obviously moved to Coosa Co. from GA in household 1030 is Kirkham McEwen (millwright) age 48 and Mary Ann McEwen age 48 listed with children.
I would think that my George Washington had family in Georgia in or near Muskogee County and in or near Coosa County ALA. to return there with his new wife. (And new wife's parents moved there also)
In 1857, my 3rd great uncle Francis M. Washington married Louisa Archer 22 Nov. 1857 in Coosa County ALA. Francis or Louisa is never heard of EVER again. We would like the descendants of this marriage (if any) to get in contact with the family.
We also would like to know if any other Washington, Law or McEwen families lived in/near Coosa County ALA in 1840 through 1860. Historic cemeteries in the area, and also would like to know if any Washington families lived in or near Muskogee County Georgia in 1821-1845.
It could lead to solving who my George Washington's parents were, where Martha Law (Washington) and Catherine Washington are buried and who Martha's parents were, and what became of Francis Marion Washington and wife Louisa Archer Washington. This is a 55 year research our family is still trying to solve.
Best Regards,
Terrie Washington Routh
