Oscar Wyatt Latham

I am working on several books re Lathams from Randolph Co, NC. Various Lewis Lathams figure in that family history. He is what I have on Oscar Wyatt. I would like to update the family lines, fill in gaps, etc. Many thanks, Richard Latham in Seattle

CHAPTER 5

Lewis & Elizabeth Latham
1817 – 1880

North Carolina
Clay, Randolph & Marion Counties, Alabama

In the family of Lewis LATHAM of Clay County, Alabama, we again find hints of possible familial roots in or near Randolph County, North Carolina. The name Lewis itself hints of such roots. The names of his sons (i.e., James, William, Charles and Noah) further suggest a tradition of naming that is associated with Randolph County Lathams. At the time of writing, however, I do not have evidence that specifically links Lewis to Randolph County.

For more detailed discussions of the early use of the name Lewis among Randolph County, North Carolina Lathams, see xxxx.

xxxx	LEWIS LATHAM, son of ----- LATHAM and -----; born ca 1817, North
xxxx	Carolina; died July 1880, Clay County, Alabama.

Married ELIZABETH -----, born ca 1822. In the 1930 census, her son,
James J. or his wife, reported that she was born in the United States;
however, it was known that Lewis was born in North Carolina.

Children of Lewis and Elizabeth Latham:

i.	James J. Latham xxxx
ii.	Martha Latham xxxx
iii.	William Latham xxxx
v.	Charles R. Latham xxxx
vi.	Noah Latham xxxx

James J. Latham moved to Marshall County, Alabama, and many of his descendants remained there at least through 1930. There appears to have been more than one Latham family in the area. Descendants of this line seem to have been in the Friendship, Albertville and possibly Hooper area. Other Lathams were in Crawford. The surnames of some were spelled LATHAN. I noted that there seemed to be above average variations in ages as recorded in the censuses over a period of three decades. The birth places of the parents of James J. Latham were consistently associated with North Carolina for his father, and his mother’s place of birth was recorded as Georgia or North Carolina.

xxxx	JAMES J. [JIM] LATHAM, son of Lewis LATHAM and Elizabeth -----; born
xxxx	June 1860 (age 39, 1900FC; age 50, 1910FC; age 66, 1930FC),
Alabama. According to the 1900 census, his father was born in North
Carolina and his mother in Georgia.
Occupation: farmer (1900, 1910, 1930)

Married EXIR R. [EXER, EXA, EDDA A., H.] DUKE, ca 1883
(married 17 years at the time off the 1900 census), Alabama; born October
1869 (age 31, 1900FC; age 62, 1930FC), Alabama. Both of her parents
were born in Georgia. In the 1900 census she reported that 8 of 8
children born to her were still living and in 1910 she reported that 11 of 11
were still living. Her name was transcribed as Edda A. in the 1910 census,
but it was likely Exer, and in 1930 in was Exa. One of the 11 children
born after 1900 was not enumerated in the household. In the 1930 census
her name was clearly recorded as Exer H. If was further recorded that she
was age 16 at the time of marriage.

Children of James J. and Exir R. Latham:

i.	*William Lewis Latham xxxx
ii.	*Jessie J. [Jesse] Latham xxxx
iii.	*+Mary E. Latham xxxx
iv	*John W. JOHN G. LATHAN (born ca 1854 (age 66, 1930FC), was born in North Carolina, as were his parents. He lived in Albertsville, which was where a number of the Lathams lived.

xxxx	WILLIAM LEWIS LATHAM, son of James J. (Lewis, -----) and Exir R. [Exer]
xxxx	DUKE; born December 1883 (age 16, 1900FC; age 36, 1920FC),
Alabama; died 1 April 1958, Clay County, Alabama.

Married SARAH J. -----, born ca 1887 (age 33, 1920FC), Alabama.

At the time of the 1920 census, William L. and Sarah J. LATHAM lived
two household from Jessie and Artis L. LATHAM. At this time I do not
know the relationship of the two families.

Children of William L. and Sarah J. Latham:

i.	*Eunice C. Curiously, Jessie’s name was
enumerated in the 1930 census as Jesse J. Jr. Latham. Given that his
father was named James J., why was “Jr.” added to the name of Jesse
J.?
Military service: no
Occupation: farmer (1910, 1920, 1930)

Living two households from Jessie and Artis LATHAM at the time of the
1920 census were William L. and Sarah J.
I was checking some information regarding my ancestor, Samuel Hancock of Tallapossa, Al. and ran accross this posting. Don't know what you have found out the last couple of years but the 1880 Federal Census Slave Schedules for Tallapossa County lists 7 unamed slaves owned by Samuel Hancock. One is a "Mulatto" listed as 20years of age. There is a Henry Hancock listed as 40 years of age on the 1880 census. He is listed as mulatto and born in Georgia. Samuel Hancock and family moved to Tallapossa, Al about 1842. He was my ggg grandfather. Could this be the connection you have been looking for? Will be happy to share any information to see the is any connection.

Sparks Macoy/McCoy Family Reunion

SPARKS-MACOY FAMILY GATHERING
AT CRAGFORD, ALABAMA

Descendants and friends of the Dennis McFranklin Sparks and Julia Ann Macoy family will meet on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at the Cragford Community Center (old Cragford School House) in Clay County, Alabama, for their ninth annual reunion. The reunion will start at 10:00 a.m. and last until everyone gets ready to go home.

Dennis and Julia were married on November 11, 1866, in Randolph County (now Clay County), ALABAMA. Dennis and Julia raised a large family. Of their sixteen children, eleven raised families of their own. This branch of the Sparks family left England in the 1600’s and settled in the State of Maryland. By the mid-1700’s, part of the family had relocated to the forks of the Yadkin River in North Carolina. Some family members migrated into Georgia in the early 1800’s. And by the mid-1800’s, the family had settled in those areas of Randolph and Talladega Counties that later became Clay County.

A covered dish lunch will be served at noon. Bring enough food for your family plus a little extra. Also bring copies of old family recipes, songs, stories, pictures and anything else that might be of interest to others and contribute to the Sparks family history. In past years, relatives from several states attended the reunion. A large turnout is anticipated this year. If you have any questions about the reunion, please contact Ed Sparks at 256-396-5950 or Carl Burdette at 770-271-1283 or burdette@mindspring.com.

Glenda,
Thanks for the reply. There are some similar naming patterns, but I am unable to make a connection. I searched through the name or initials of all the grandchildren looking for a Patrick. The only families I have found in Tallapoosa County were John’s Family and a few of his wife’s Luker family. John’s daughter Sarah married a William Character in Tallapoosa County before they moved to Clay (Randolph) County. Our Ephraim enlisted for service in the CSA at about the age of twenty and was killed in action around Richmond on 27 June 1862. Does not appear that he was married.
I have saved you information for future reference or find. Thanks again, Kelvin Moore
Searching for the parents and siblings of John Moore, born 1801 in Columbia County, GA with death in 1887, Lineville, Clay County, Alabama. John married Elizabeth (Betsy) Luker, the daughter of William Luker (Looker) and Catherine Crook. Some research records indicate Madison County, GA. Children include:
William Riley Moore (1831-1863) md E.A. (last name unknown)
Sarah (Puss) Moore (1833-1861) md William Character
James Alexander Moore (1835-1916) md Emily Wood
Parthenia (Theny) Moore (1838- aft 1910) md Sol Limbaugh
Ephraim Franklin Moore (1840-1862)
Mary Elizabeth Moore (1844-1875) md John Eidson
Joseph Simeon Moore (1845-1932) md Barbara Catherine Cruise [my great-grandparents]
John Wesley Moore (1848-aft 1900) md Amanda McCollum
Thomas Jefferson Moore (1852-1913) md Mary Price

The Moores lived in Coweta County, GA in the 1830s, moving to Tallapoosa County, AL before the 1840 census, and then moving to Clay (Randolph) County AL before the 1860 census. Research has shown that the Moores stayed near Betsy’s parents throughout their lifetime.
Research has not confirmed but Family tale states the John’s father was John Nathaniel Moore born in Virginia or South Carolina and his mother, name unknown born in Maryland. Further states his grandfather was born in Ireland coming to America before The Revolutionary War, but served and died in service thereof.
As they say, my ox cart is in the ditch on this. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Kelvin R. Moore
Email: keljacmoore@yahoo.com
Don't know if I have written to you before...and I know your post was a while ago....but I am looking for the Parents of Hezekiah Lunday (abt. 1778- aft. 1870)....married to Lovace Spivey (have my line proved back to him). I have quite a bit on him and a suspected connection before him...but no verification on who his parents were. I know he has a connection to Zacheriah, George (most probable previous generation),and Nehemiah, but do not know how they were related. They were all in Edgefield district of South Carolina (also called Old 96th district) from 1800-around 1832. Then Hezekiah went to Chambers Co. or Randolph County Alabama along with his son Patrick Henry Lunday (and his wife Sarah and children).

I am looking for any info on Mary E Smith, b. 1849 who married George W Brown(b. 1854 in TN). I have her as born in Clay Co. I know they also lived in Tallapoosa Co. Their children were John Clifford, Robert Manard, Greenie, Mary Ann and Benjamin Curtis(my g-grandfather). Rumors were that she was part Creek and George W was 1/2 Cherokee. Any info on either family would be appreciated!

Looking for any info on Cullen Marion G Smith and wife.

They had mostly boys. H. H. Smith, John P. Smith, J. T Smith, Marion Smith, Eli Smith, etc...

The brothers went to NorthEast Texas after their dad died in 1895.

I believe H. H. Smith may be the same as my grandfather, Mr. H. H. Smith who married my grandmother in Corsicana, Texas in 1905.

The 1880 census says H. H. was born 1871. One record I have says my grandfather was born Sept. 10, 1871.

There is a Henry H. on the 1900 census of Fanklin County, Texas listed as being bron Aug. 1871.

My grandfather's full name was Henry Homer Smith.

Any further info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I am also researching John Jackson Allen with very little luck. However, during a recent web search, I turned up fragments of a member story on footnote.com. WHen I click the link, I get a general article listing. When I search the site, the article doesn't turn up. In any case, the text fragments from the search are:

John Jackson Allen and the CIVIL WAR …John Jackson Allen was born in Covington, Newton County Georgia on December 4, 1822. When John J. was seventeen his father, Mother, and sister died of ...

Quite interesting. If I can find the article or even the author, we may have found a good source.

I hope you have had some success since your post in 2003.

Fred Stevens
