GGG-grandfather (maternal)?, John Jackson Allen lived in Clay County AL. ? Mar'd Caroline Martin. Would like any info on him, Civil War service, father & mother (where from) , etc. Believe he had 8 children including my GG-grandfather Chesley Burton Allen b. 1862. County records lost in Courthouse fire in 1877?

I am also researching John Jackson Allen with very little luck. However, during a recent web search, I turned up fragments of a member story on footnote.com. WHen I click the link, I get a general article listing. When I search the site, the article doesn't turn up. In any case, the text fragments from the search are:
