Winlock's brother Nathan's wife, I believe, was Native American. Her name was Hattie Morningstar (Morning Star). The reason I'm so interested in the Native American history in the family is that from the line of Emily's husband Hillard, I'm a Muscogee Creek descendant. Hillard was 1/8 Creek. I'm a Historical Research Adviser on the research team for the Perdido Bay Tribe of Lower Muscogee Creek Indians and always interested in trying to verify any of my own Native American connections. I'm part Cherokee from my dad's side. My half-sister's dad was an enrolled Chickasaw. And my step-father was a descendant of a brother of Pocahontas. I'm related directly or as a cousin to a number of Native American lines from among the Creek, Cherokee and Choctaw but have little info on any of them in my direct line other than my Creek heritage. Since John Carney was Choctaw and Emily married a Creek descendant and given what my close family members have said about the Choctaw link, I don't doubt one bit that there was Choctaw in Annie's family. I would think it would possibly have come in on her mother's side since we know the Pearson line was a line of English Quakers. I have a lot of info on the Pearsons and their Quaker ancestry. Anyway, the fact that we have so much detail on Winlock, Lucretia, etc. but not even a last name for Elizabeth, that is "sometimes" an indication of a Native American wife because there were no records for most of them. And most families back then tried to deny being Indian because of the prejudices against them. So they took white names and tried to pass for white and told their children not to admit to having Indian in them. We see this all the time, and I've heard so many stories. And here's one. My son's paternal grandmother is 92. He spent most of last summer with her and they were looking at old family photos, etc. and he asked her if there was any Native American anywhere in her family history. She told him, "No". Then about two weeks ago out of the blue she admitted to him that she herself is 1/8 Creek, told him about her mother and grandmother that it came from, etc. and theyve talked about it again since then. But they were brought up not to admit it. I guess she's getting older and thought she'd go ahead and let someone know before she dies. That's what Aunt Ada did too. She first denied it and then later told me about how Emily was conceived and confirmed to me they were Choctaw, told me where Annie is buried, etc. So, this is part of my Pearson ancestry that I have run into a brick wall, that no one else I know is old enough to have been alive back then to know the facts and fill me in. You've already sorted out and given me more than I had. I hadn't even had Sarah Ann's siblings names before tonight. I can't thank you enough.

Did you ever hear about Annie or Emily or that family having Choctaw in them? John Carney was from a long line of Choctaws, so it would make sense. There are some Pearsons but a lot of Carneys on the Choctaw rolls. I found an Annie Pearson age 1 on the rolls that said she didn't live on the reservation, but I was told that was a different Annie Pearson, the dates were off or something for it to have been my Annie. But Aunt Ada told me they were part Choctaw and Mother said from when she remembers seeing Annie "She was Indian".

Thank you! You just answered some questions. So Elizabeth was my ancestor, not Lucretia. That's a critical point to clear up. And what you told me about Emily confirms what my great-Aunt Ada told me and why it was all so hushed up and never talked about. She told me Annie was raped by a cousin and Emily was the child of that rape. But then I wondered if John Carney was that cousin since that would bear out the Choctaw tie and the fact that Emily used the Carney name. I was at such deadends and so new to researching family history, no, I have no documents. I've just been going on family info and what scant info I could find online. And, admittedly, since I was finding no info like you just shared, I moved on to research other family lines where info was more readily available. I don't want to put you to any trouble, but if you have info without having to do more research, I'd appreciate it. Now, let me make sure I have this correct. We share Christopher Winlock as a common ancestor but just descend from his differing wives, right? So we're "half cousins"? lol Look, you can email me personally at dlapeyrouse@clear.net and I'll delete the posting with the dicey subject matter, if that works for you. Again, thanks so much!
I got some things confused myself. It has been a while since I have worked on that branch and I should have looked in my records before I talked to you.

Winlock Pearson was married to an Elizabeth LNU. They appear to have had 3 or 4 daughters, Amanda, Mary, Sarah Ann and Caroline. Obviously, Elizabeth died and in the early 1860's. Winlock then married Lucretia in Clarke County, MS but lived in Choctaw County,Al. They had several acres right on the AL/MS line.

As for Sarah Ann and Emily, from what I could get from family, Emily was born from a relationship with a possible cousin and they tried to keep it quiet so John Carney was not Emily's biological father. I can't help you with a name. Have you gotten her death certificate yet? As far as I know, Lula was the only daughter born to their marriage. Not that this is important but it seems Lula was a pistol ball. The story goes that when my gr grandfather married Lula, her mother, Sarah Ann, told him " You wanted her, you got her, see if you can handle her." They got married when she was 13 yrs old and they had a son, Arthur C Sims in 1905. Unfortunately they were divorced in 1906 and she went on to marry a man named Landrum and had several children. For whatever reason, neither my gr grandfather nor Lula raised Arthur. John and Sarah Ann raised him.

Have you gotten any pension records for Winlock Pearson yet? I think he filed one in the 1890's before he died in I think 1898 but Lucretia filed several before her death in the 1920's.

Let me know exactly what you need or want in the way of information and I'll start digging out what I have.

Michele

I realize where the confusion is. When I posted that old post a long while back, I was mistakenly thinking that Sarah Anne was Christopher's wife, but I later learned she was his daughter. So you read my old post stating the incorrect info. Lucretia Sims was Christopher's wife, not Sarah Anne. So this should put us on the same page. Sorry if my old post was confusing. I was still trying to sort it all out back that.

I have always had that Christopher Winlock (Wenlock) and Lucretia Sims were the parents of Sarah Anne "Annie" Pearson who married John Carney and I know for a fact that Annie was Emily's mother. My mother told me Christopher Winlock was Annie's father, not her husband. John Carney was Annie's husband, not Emily's. My mother met Annie when she was a little girl, Annie being her great-grandmother. Aunt Ada told me Emily's parents were cousins. They hold that Annie and Emily were both part Choctaw. And I know Emily was married to Hillard McLain, not John Carney. Otherwise my grandmother would have been a Carney and not a McLain. So our info isn't exactly matching up with what I know about my family.

Forgot - it was actually Emily's mother Sarah Anne "Annie" Pearson who married John Carney. Annie's daughter Emily was my grandmother's mother. Emily died when Nanny was only three years old. Emily's husband was Hillard C. McLain. After Annie was widowed and Hillard's father was widowed, THEY married. lol

I was so surprised and delighted to get a response after all this time!! You're the FIRST person to know exactly who I'm talking about!! Tell me, do you know if John Carney was Emily Elizabeth's father or stepfather? She went by both Emily Pearson and Emily Carney and at first I thought my grandpa Hillard had two wives named Emily. lol Everyone on that side of my family with any answers is dead. My mother knows nothing. What info I have about Emily, I got from my great-aunt Ada, Emily's oldest daughter, when she was in a nursing home. The info was pretty sketchy. She said Emily and her mother were part Choctaw. I know the Carneys were Choctaw. She told me Emily's father was a cousin of Annie's but she didn't give me the father's name. So, I don't know if John Carney was my gg-grandfather or my gg-step-grandfather. ANY info on this would be greatly appreciated!!! THANK YOU for contacting me!!!

Hi Debbie, your Winlock Pearson that married Sarah Ann and had Emily is the same one that married Lucretia Sims in Clarke County, MS. Lucretia Sims was my gr gr grandfather's sister.

Emily married John C Carney and they had a daughter named Lula and I think another daughter. Here is a twist for you, Lula married my gr grandfather, John Clardy Sims, who was was the nephew of Lucretia Sims Pearson. You are probably aware of most of this but I thought I would throw the rest out there. I am somewhat familiar with the Pearson since they married into the Sims family a couple of times.

Great clue to start looking! I have hunted and hunted for a Sarah "BANKS" child prior to 1870 and have been unable to find one. If she wasn't actually "Banks" by birth, but possibly taken in or adopted by family, this might help solve my mystery. Thanks for the reply. I'm a newcomer to family searches and appreciate all the help I can get.

Looking for info re: parentage, place of birth, or place of marriage. Sarah was living in the home of F.H. Guinn and his wife Mary in Choctaw County, AL in 1870. Possibly she was related to the Guinn, Wright, or Ray families of Choctaw county, but I can't find the connection. About 1870 she married Richard Wesley Conn, also of Choctaw County, but I cannot find a marriage record.Census records indicate she was born in Mississippi, but I've been unable to find the record.

My Grand dad also was born WIlmer Nickelson and 1920 would hve been around the time he was born. My aunts have never attempted to find the other side of the family. Which was in Goergia. My great grand mother left my grand dad to be raised by his father. She then moved on with her life and I believe had other kids. I want to know so bad my other side of the family. My uncle Houston did not have the same mother as my granddad but they were brothers. In Alabama, I think my grand dad was born in Mississippi but we have no birth certificate. Which makes it all the worst in finding my family

My great grandfather's name was Charlie Monroe Todd. I am trying to find out his parents names. All I know is that he was born on 7/13/1886 in Womack Hill, Choctaw, Alabama. He had a sister but we don't know her name. His parents gave him to some neighbors for unknown reasons. After living with this couple, rumor is they worked him to the point that he ran away. He came to Mississippi and was working for a logging company but was then drafted into the war @ 1910. If anyone knows any information that might help, it would be greatly appreciated. Charlie was admitted to Whitfield Mental Hospital in Mississippi where he died, Altheimers and Dementia ran in his family if that helps.

Thanks halljuliesac@yahoo.com

Leila Mosley (5/9/1876-4/25/1906) was married to William Frank Rogers (4/7/1871-8/21/1958). They were the parents to Hilton Franklin (1/16/1899-?), Benjamin Maxwell (5/21/1900-4/23/1956), Leila Vermelle (1/29/1902-?) and William Frank II (4/25/1906-?). Leila died giving birth to Frank. After her death William Frank Rogers remarried on 12/15/1908 to Bessie Collins Stringer (3/6/1881-?) and they had George Collins (1/16/1910-?), Mattie Mae (6/27/1912-?), Helen Elizabeth (12/28/1914-?), Ada Gray (4/30/1917-4/30/1945) and Jesse Coleman (5/9/1920-still living). Jesse Coleman Rogers is my Dad. His grandmother's name was Mary Vermelle Carter Rogers and his grandfather was Benjamin Dismukes Rogers. I do not know much about Granddaddy's first wife Leila, but if I find any information about her I will forward it on to you. I have her listed as a Mosley.

Albert O Green and Ada Graham were married 4 Oct 1903 in Durant, Oklahoma. I found their marriage certificate in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory record. There is plenty to find for Ada. However, there are no records for Albert O Green. I'm looking for his parents name and birth.

Albert lived in Tyler, TX and was a choir director at Pine Spring Baptist Church in 1909 and died in 1912. I believe he was born @1880 in either Texas or TN. One census record says his father was born in Kansas.

If anyone can help that would be wonderful.

Hi, The Moseley's and the Donald's intermarried alot. My grandmother's name is Gladys Eloise Donald. She was born in Gilbertown. Her parents are Jerry Donald and Pearl Moseley. Dr. Robert Donald in Pascagoula is related to us. Gospel Singer Tommy Moseley is also related to us. Tommy's father, Charlie Moseley, was an elected offical in Pascagoula, MS for awhile. I am now living in Glen Burnie, MD because a transfer for work. I was told by Charlie-who is my grandmother's first cousin that we are part of the MS Choctaw tribe. I have seen NO proof. Feel free to get in touch and I can send some information on the Moseley/Donald unions. Rhonda Hammonds

Hello Jennifer
It is good to see someone else in this family researching this Brown family. I was told by Greta Dungan Jurrens that Martin and Frances died within 6 months of each other. That was all she had heard of them. I think that they died 1891-1900. Pro. Choctaw Co. Al. They married 26 Feb. 1880 Choctaw Co. Al. I was told that your grandfather had done some research on the Brown's by his wife Peggy
and that if she could find it she would send a copy to me but I did not talk to her again before she died. If you would like to have what info I have my e-mail is joni21@bellsouth.net. R.B. Whitten

Thanks for that lead. I'm sure it's the same family. There were about three Christopher Winlocks and one Winlock (Wenlock) Christopher in that family line. Mine was born c. 1824 and was from Alabama, so that sounds like a possible match. There is a Lucretia in the family but she's Lucretia Pearson.

I only recently learned that the Winlock Christopher (vs. Christopher Winlock) is the correct listing for my ggg-grandfather - the one born in Alabama in 1824.

Would you happen to have a link to that World Connect Project listing? If not, I'll find it.

Thanks so much!

Debbie

Annie had a daughter name Emily Elizabeth who used both the Pearson and Carney surnames. I'm trying to find out i John was her father or her stepfather.

Thanks!

I'm looking for information on my Pearson great-great-grandparents Christopher Winlock Pearson and Sarah Ann Pearson from Gilbert Town, Choctaw County, Alabama. Their daughter Emily Elizabeth Pearson married Hillard C. McLain Sr. in Wayne County, Mississippi. They were my maternal great-grandparents. I know nothing else of the Pearson family but was always told Saran Ann "Annie" was Choctaw. Now I find a family that seems possibly linked to mine here among Choctaw inquiries, so it gives me reason to think they're related. Any info would be appreciated.

I was told that the grandfather of John Jefferson Sims was killed during the Civil War (don't know if he was military or a civilian casualty) and is buried under an old oak tree in an old Sims cemetery between Berrytown and Gilbertown, Alabama. When the war ended, his widow wallpapered their home with Confederate bills.

Now.... the cemetery is probably gone with "progress." When I check a list of Alabama towns, there is no Berrytown, but there is a Berry in Fayette County. Gilbertown is in Choctaw County.
