Cherokee County Civil War Monument?????????

Is there a County Civil War Monument in Cherokee County?? I am Chuck James from Montgomery, Alabama. I have a hobby and attempting to locate each Alabama County Civil War Monument that exists across the state. I like to find those old Confederate Soldiers usually standing on a pedestal in front of the County Court House. I may also find them in some forgotten corner of an old cemetery. Is there one in Centre or another town in Cherokee County? It makes it much easier on me to ask her first, before I get in my car and drive up looking. Please take a minute and let me know what is in Cherokee County. I have found 36 monuments across the state so far. I photograph and record the information on each monument. I want to one day make a web site and make it easy for other to view and share this old history. I appreciate your time and information.

Thanks Again
Chuck James

So far my inquiries regarding statues of civil war monuments have produced little or no results. We are hosting a DAR meeting here in the Library tomorrow and I will again pose the question to the attendees for you. I have discovered something that may be of passing interest for you:George Jeff Edgins, Private, C Copany, 1st Regument, SC Infantry, enlised 02.20.1861 in Spartanburg, SC under Capt. J.L. Corley (according to 02.01.1956 letter from SC Archives Dept.) and transferred to D Company May 18, 1861. Reenlisted at Ft. Moultrie, Feb. 20, 1862, and promoted to Sgt. 12.20.1864. His cemetery marker in Moshat Baptist Church Cemetery here in Cherokee County reads: "Soldier G.J. Edgens, born 1835, died Jan. 24, 1890... He fired the first gun at Ft. Sumter, SC." I understand he is only one of several who have claimed this distinction.

We can provide you with a location list of all the cemeteries in this County if in the future you make a trip to this area. I will make periodic inquiries and if anything turns up, will advise.

Thank you for the information. Our family lives in Floyd county, GA across the line from Cherokee county. I live and work in Kentucky, at least for the time being.

I've visted Moshat Cemetery several times and have taken my kids to see his gravesite as well.

We have pictures of the headstone and the previous Cherokee county historical marker. Do you know if there are plans to put up a new marker anytime?
