I am writing to see if there is maybe a connection with my
grandfather James Shorter Vann. He was the illegitimate
child of Ann Vann, born in 1860.The County is adjoining
to Barbour County. He has a son that he named James Eli
Seaborn Vann, and later Shorter went by Elie Shorter Vann.
His mother Ann, was born in 1840. This maybe a long shot,
Just wondering if Eli could be Shorter's father.

Regarding your query, I found the following :

Georgia Marriages :

1. Reuben C. Shorter to Mary Gill
May 31, 1812 - Jasper Co., GA

2. John Gill Shorter to Mary Jane Battle
January 12, 1843 - Sumter Co., GA

3. Eli S. Shorter to Marietta Fannin
January 12, 1848 - Troup Co., GA

Alabama Marriages :

1. Henry R. Shorter to Adriana C. Keitt
May 9, 1854 - Barbour Co., AL

In the 1850 Barbour Co. Federal Census, Henry R. Shorter-age 17-GA -student , was enumerated in the household of R.C. Shorter-age 65-VA-farmer, his wife Mary-age 53-GA, and a sister Laura-age 14-AL .. Also a white male, R.F.C. Kolb-age 11- AL ..

In the 1860 Census, Eli S. Shorter - age 37 - GA was an attorney by trade.. His net worth was $ 155,000 which included 80 slaves ...Eli, Marietta and 4 children were living in Eufaula..

In 1860, Henry R. Shorter - age 28 was an attorney by trade, his net worth was $ 50,000 which included 38 slaves.
Henry and Marietta had no children listed in their household in 1860 .. They were living in Eufaula ..

In 1860 John Gill Shorter - age 42-GA, was a court judge in Eufaula, his wife Mary Jane -37-GA , and daughter Mary -age 16-AL were living in Eufaula .. John's net worth was $170,000 which included only 10 slaves .. John Gill Shorter & family was living next door to Henry R. Shorter in Eufaula ..

John Gill Shorter was Governor of Alabama 1861-1863 ...

It would appear that John, Eli and Henry Shorter were brothers ....

I hope this is helpful ..
