I have recently come across the book "Oh My God" by Charles Bryant which claims that Joseph Stiggins (married to Haw) came from North Carolina with several other settlers of the Tensaw area.
I know everyone says he was British and that he came from Virginia, but the Roanoke source is from his grandson. Joseph's son George claims (in a letter) that his father is a "Scotchman."
All Caucasians living in the British colonies were technically British (though some had other ancestry). Perhaps the grandson got his accent mixed up in the memory? I don't think Joseph Napoleon was very old when his grandfather, Joseph, died.
I have yet to write the author for his source on North Carolina (so please don't take this as proven fact) but if several others in the immediate vicinity were from NC, it would make sense that Joseph was too.
A side note about the book: While this is not the best writing, the book contains a great deal of information I did not already know on the Fort Mims massacre and the families involved, including Stiggins, Mims and Sizemore. There were only 1000 printed, but I managed to purchase one for $9.99.
