The only information that I have on Henry Whaley is derived from the 1841 census. I do not have any accurate information on his year of birth or death.

Robert Taylor Whaley was baptized in Harlaxton but the record of his baptism is is held in Nottingham Records Office not Lincoln Records Office. Whether this could mean that any information on Henry is held at an unexpected location can only be conjectured! Of the other boys of Samuel and Ann born before 1821, Samuel b 1813 does not appear in the 1841 census. Could Samuel and Henry be the same ????

Regards
Bob

My g grandfathers brother was William Jasper Jones. My g grandfather also named one of his sons William Jasper, so think it is possible it is a family named passed on. I do not know his fathers name or the state they originally came from, have heard possibly NC. It isn't an uncommon name, but would like to know if possibly they could be the same. Our family ended up in TN, then MS. My g grandfather was born 1858. Does any of this sound similar?

I don't have Louis in my database but I'm still working on Warren and Allen Counties. You might want to check the 1860 Warren County Census to try to find Louis's parents.

I have traced my maternal grandmothers family orior to their arrival here in VA. I am especially interested in any data available on the following individuals:
Terrell, Mary [b.19 February 1779; d. 1859 Smyth Co., VA] who married Sprinkle, William [b. 1780 MD d. 31 December 1852 in Mt. Carmel, Marion, Smyth County, VA]. Mary's father is listed as Reuben who was the son of Terrell, Robert and Foster, Mary. The mother for Mary is listed as "unk."; the first Terrell I have found in VA was Richmond who married Waters, Elizabeth who had been born in the Chickahominy Creek area; their children and grandchildren also being born in that area.
Second woman in question is: Fulcher, Emiline D. who first appears anywhere on the 1850 census as living with the parents of Sprinkle, George Washington whom she married.
I am desperately trying to prove the allegation of my maternal grandmother who often stated there is "Indian blood" in the family. Anyone with information which might assist me in my search, PLEASE email me at tbunny1@msn.com or PaleBuffalo@verizon.net!
Thank you!

P.M.
I am a great-great granddaughter of Anna Marie Jugenheimer and Philip Gerhart Keck. I have a book written by my aunt which details the Jugenheimer-Keck families in some depth. I would be glad to help any fellow genealogist trace our roots.. I have the Jugenheimers to 1680. The Keck family is recorded in letters with few dates, but many stories.

Actually, Ted, you weren't all that far off. The British Celts had their own form of "son of." "Map" or "ap" corresponds to the Gaelic "mac" or "mc:" thus Pugh is from "ap Hugh" or Bowen from "ap Owen." After the rise of the Tudors (a partly Welsh family -- Tewdwr) a lot of Welsh and Cornish took English names and firm surnames. Which is why there are so many Jones and Johns among them. Also Edwards, Roberts, Williams, along with native names like Chenoweth (New House), Llewellen and the like. The Cornish name corresponding to "Smith" is usually "Angove" from " an Gof" "the Smith."

One real problem in our family's genealogy, as in others, is the horrible variations in spelling in earlier records. Is our Conwell name really Celtic in origin or is it a misspelling of something like "Cromwell" and are we really English after all, if we can trace the name back to embarkation from an English port? To quote the King from "The King and I: "Is a puzzlement." Does it matter all that much? Whether Anglo-Saxon or Norman or Viking or British or Gaelic, we've been descending for centuries. All of us humans are mongrels by now anyway. Happy hunting.

Actually Cornwealas isn't an English tribal name. It's the name that was applied to the Kernewek (Cornish) by the Anglo Saxons. The Cornish were native British, the same as the Welsh or Bretons of Brittany (who came from southwestern Britain in the early centuries after the Romans left Britain in 410. The Cornish word (Kernow) is the name of a Family line in Cornwall: Curnow. I suspect some branch (es) may have anglicised it to Cornwall, or it may stem from an aristocratic family line indicating "of Cornwall"

Frank Siegle

I the African meaning is of Swahili decent and has a meaning of "Goal, Purpose". I will say that either meaning fit my daughter!

I followed my own advice, in a post a couple of posts down from yours, and found this:

Cornwell is an English regional name from the County of Cornwall, named for an Old English tribal name Cornwealas , from Kernow -- the name the Cornish people used to describe themselves, possibly meaning "horn, headland" + wealas = strangers, foreigners. Occasionally, Cornwell is a place name from Cornwell in Oxfordshire, from Old English corn < cron, cran = crane + wella = spring, stream. Cornwall and Curnow are variations.

I'll leave the rest to you; no sense in my having all of the fun.

Family names evolved over hundreds of years, as towns got bigger and "John" was no longer enough to identify a man; so he became "John the Smith" or "John, son of Donald" or "John of the Green" (meadow - a cowherd). Those in turn became John Smith, John Donadlson and John Green.

My Great grandfather was Alex Cymbal, in the US spelled Symbol or Symbal. He was born in 1884, I believe in Skalat, near Ternopil, now in Ukraine. I do not know a lot about that. He came to the US in 1903, later sent for and married Kathryn Kucharski, also from Skalat.

I am told the name is perhaps related to the instrument, the cymbal.
