My grandfather was born on 'Luckland Plantation' around 1887. He was a Smith. Is anyone familiar with this plantation name? It is thought to be near Baldwin. Any information on the family that owned this plantation would be appreciated.

Interstingly enough, my family owned Luckland at that time. It was my great-great grandparents, and the family name would have been either Caldwell or Sanders. I'll have to check with my uncle in S.C. I have always been told that the plantation was sold, the 'big house' became a school, and then burned. My family still owns bits of bayou (the parts of the plantation that nobody wanted to buy...).

Wow! This is very interesting. I have been trying to find info about Luckland for a long time. I was told that members of my family were slaves on this plantation and that the owner was a man called Old Dr. Sanders. This info was verbally passed down and later included in mom's family bible. I do recall a Bayou Bygosh but the pronuciation may have been wrong. I'm not sure but is it Bayou Teche? I did not know about the main house being turned into a school, but I did learn that the plantation was no longer standing. I would really like to learn more. I hope the info I have given helps.

Luckland is located along Bayou Teche east of the Calumet Cut and near the airport on Hwy 182. It is near and perhaps adjoining Calumet and Avalon Plantations. There are modern homes along the bayou on the highway in that area now, but the land on the opposite side of the bayou does not have many stuctures.

Thank you for the specifics on the location of Luckland. I have heard that there was a fire years ago on the plantation. My grandfather was raised there, and spoke of Dr. Sanders. He had several siblings that were killed in a fire. I wonder if this is the same fire spoken of, previously. Any idea what year a major fire occurred on Luckland?

Luckland Plantation is on the outskirts of Patterson, LA. Approximately 1 mile east of the Harry P Williams Memorial airport on hwy 182. On the left hand side of the road is a large farm shed. right past this also on the left is an old wood frame house which was built to replace the old plantation home that burnt down which was behind the old oak trees behind this house and to the left. The property was later acquired by Mr Duhe of New Iberia and named Luckland Farm. The reason I know all this is because My father & Mr Duhe were partners and I was born and raised there. I used to play on the old brick foundation for the chimney of the old plantation home.

Would you happen to know when the fire happened? My grandfather spoke of siblings that were killed in a fire on Luckland.

I vaguely remember my father talking about it, but not sure of the exact time. I want to say late 20's early 30's, but I may be way off on that

Hello i found this thread when researching Luckland Farm. The reason I was researching this is my brother, brother-in-law, and I were hiking in the woods behind my family's home on Cremo Lane in Patterson, LA, and we came across an old rusted out truck. On the door of the truck is painted Luckland Farm Patterson, La. I thought it very intereseting and since I love history I researched it and here I am. If you'd like more info on it or the location you can email me at daswulf1979@gmail.com

Sorry for such a long delay in responding. I don't check this thread often at all, as you can tell.

If you are interested in a phone conversation on Luckland, I'm glad to share what I know. The plantation proper was sold around 1900, became a school--a boys' school, I believe--and then the house burned down.
