Surnames: Grant, Swank, Salmon
So, Great-Aunt was Catherine/Kate Grant b. 1879 Tipperary, Ireland to Patrick & Johanna Grant (nee Grady) - she goes out to America in early 1899, ends up pregnant by October of that year. Son, Charles Swank b. 10 June 1900 in Philadelphia Almhouse - father is named as Charles Swank on baptism in All Saint's Chapel owned by the Almhouse (someone on Facebook found that for me). Apparently the father died in 1904 - can't find record of that or marriage, if there was one to Catherine.

In 1906, Catherine/Kate & Charles Swank come to Ireland - she leaves him here until late 1911 with her parents. In 1909 in Philadelphia, she marries William Alexander Salmon..marriage licence has her as Kate Swank - dates of birth are out a bit for her, but its definitely her. Have them on 1910 in Philadelphia. As I said, she comes back to Ireland in 1911 for Charles, and on the immigration, he is known as Charles Salmon. Fare paid by the US Navy. In 1915, the family are in New York - as per the 1915 NY State Census. William was in the Navy. And after that, I can't find a thing on them.

Would love to find more and break down a brick wall on her.

Cheers for any help,

Annie

I have that record added to William for WW1. If he did marry this Edna lady, then what happened to Catherine & Charles? I did find the birth information on Charles from Family Search as well. He was baptised 17 June 1900.

Cheers,
Annie

She's listed as single on the Almshouse census, taken days before her son's birth. DOB is a bit off, but I think it's her. Probably wasn't married to Swank, but maybe she told people that she was married in order to avoid the shame/stigma.

Name: Catherine Grant
Age: 19
Birth Date: 1881
Birthplace: Ireland
Home in 1900: Philadelphia Ward 27, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Race: White
Gender: Female
Immigration Year: Unkn
Relation to Head of House: Inmate
Marital Status: Single

Oh I'd say she wasn't married to him at all. Can't find a marriage anywhere lol. Yep, had seen that census record. Poor great-aunt
