Looking for Viktor Mattias Hemlin and Lovisa Sofia Hemlin

Surnames: Hemlin
My ancestor Lovisa Sofia Hemlin was born 11 march 1826 in Svedvi parish Sweden. Her son Viktor Mathias Hemlin, born 7 march 1863 Kolbäck parish Sweden, went to Philadelphia, Pa. He started his journey in 1883. Three years later, 27 august 1886, his mother also moves to the United States. Despite finding the two in the Swedish emigrant lists I cannot find them in the USA. What am I doing wrong? Where should I look?

Since there is no 1890 census, there's a large gap from the time they arrived to the 1900 census.

This death record could be Sofia. Perhaps you can check with the cemetery to see if they have any info regarding next of kin.

Lovisa’s Swedish passenger list says her destination is Philadelphia

She is on the “Pennsylvania, Passenger and Crew lists, 1800-1962” on ancestry as Luisa Hamlin, 60, Female, Germany (place of birth), Germany (last legal settlement), wife, No (not in US Before), No (not tourist). She arrived on the “British King” which sailed from Liverpool, and arrived in Philadelphia on 13 Sept 1886.

I know it says Germany, not Sweden, but with the language barriers - it was not always correct. The combination of age, when she arrived, where she arrived and the similarity of “Luisa Hamlin” and Lovisa Hemlin seems too circumstantial for it not to be her.

Similarly for Viktor, There is an arrival on the “British Prince” on 5 June 1883 at Philadelphia, which has Wickter Hamline, Denmark, Denmark, 20, lab. (ancestry has it indexed as “Wilhter Hamline”)

So Philadelphia is at least a starting point in the U.S.

Thank you for this! I'll try and see if this is her.

Thank you. Philadelphia was her destination in the Swedish records. Maybe I can find something to go further from there.

The spelling is really interessting. I would have thought that Viktor would become Victor in the US documents. But Wilhter Hamline, not in a million years. It must be how the official heard it.
